Situated in woodland at the NW end of a NW-SE drumlin ridge, overlooking the north part of Lough Muckno. It was on the demesne of Castleblayney. It is depicted as a hollow rectangular structure with projecting angles on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘Castle’ in ruins. It was described by Coote (1801, 91) as: ‘the ruins of an old building in the wood near the lake which has a curious whimsical appearance. It seems to be very ancient’, but this view is mistaken. It is also reputed to be a McMahon castle but this is unlikely (Livingstone 1966, 154). This is a folly described by Delaney (1998, 3-4) as consisting of a stone building (dims c. 6m x c. 6m) with large circular towers (int. diam. 2.25m) centrally located in each wall (T 0.75m). There is an internal dividing wall and the original entrance and staircase were possibly located on the N side of this. The tower on the NW wall has an average H of 3m and contains two openings (Wth 0.6m; H 1.7m) with pointed brick arches. The other three towers survive to a height of c. 1m with lintel openings in NE and SE towers and possibly in the SW one although this is now destroyed. There are also lintel openings where the walls and towers join at NW and SE. (Delaney 1998, 3-4) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). Situated at the crest of the NE-facing slope of a hill in the demesne of Castleblayney. This has never been recorded on any map. It is described (Delaney 1998, 5) as ‘an embanked area defined by a ditch (int. H 2m) on the NE side with a stone facing on the uphill side, creating a level area inside. It is suggested that it might have had a military function in the seventeenth century, but it is just as likely to be a folly on the Castleblayney estate like so many other features in the demesne. It is no longer extant on a golf course (OSAP). Gabled dormer windows. Enclosed yard to rear. Pitched tiled roofs having decorative terracotta ridge tiles, decoratively carved timber bargeboards with finials, and brown brick chimneystack with red brick band. Coursed rubble stone walls, having smooth render to bay window. Square-headed window openings having red brick surrounds, and replacement uPVC windows. Loop openings to north-east and north-west gables, having gauged red brick surrounds. Tudor-arch door opening having red brick voussoirs, and recent timber door. Cut-stone boundary wall enclosing rear yard and outbuildings having square-headed window and door opening with red brick surrounds to rear elevation. Recent garage to rear. Disused tennis court to north-east. Garden defined by dressed stone retaining wall, forming ha-ha. Six-bay two-storey outbuilding to west edge of yard having integral carriage opening. Pitched slate roof, weathervane to ridge and rendered bell-cote to south gable. Roughcast rendered rubble stone walls, square-headed window openings now boarded up. Integral carriage opening having timber lintel and red brick relieving arch. Multiple-bay two-storey outbuilding to north edge of yard having pitched slate roof and stone chimneystack, with formerly rendered rubble stone walling. Square-headed openings having red brick surrounds and relieving arches, now blocked up. Two-storey rubble stone walls, formerly part of outbuildings, form east and south edge of yard. Rubble stone boundary wall with wrought-iron gate and square-plan rubble stone piers, to east end of north range of yard. Detached three-bay single-storey outbuilding to north-east, now roofless, having dressed stone walls with quoins, having round arches with red brick block-and-start surrounds to front (west) elevation, end bays now infilled with red brick. Detached complex-plan double-pile multiple-bay single-storey gate lodge with half-dormer attic, dated 1880, having advanced gabled entrance bay to north-east (front) elevation, with cat-slide roof forming single-storey elevation to north side of this, and having full-height gabled projecting block to south-west elevation, with porch having hipped roof to re-entrant corner. Recent three-bay two-storey over basement extension to north-west corner and unfinished single-storey extension to north. Pitched and hipped roofs having sandstone copings stones, carved sandstone apex stones with wrought-iron decorative finials to gables, and replacement tiles. Raised eyebrow dormer windows. Cut sandstone chimneystacks, with corbelled chimneystack to south-east gable. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Snecked cut limestone walls with sandstone dressings and projecting plinth course. Chamfered corners at ground floor level of south-east gable having carved convex corbel. Square-headed window openings, some paired, having chamfered sandstone surrounds and recent replacement aluminium windows. Relieving arch over ground floor paired windows to south-east elevation. Square-headed door opening within open entrance porch having square-plan pier, with chamfered sandstone surround and replacement aluminium door. Carved sandstone date plaque over entrance to porch. Door opening on south-west elevation with carved sandstone shouldered square-headed opening with replacement aluminium doors.
