Situated in an undulating landscape with rock outcrop. An oval embanked enclosure (ext. dims c. 35m NW-SE; c. 25m NE-SW) is depicted on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’, with a gravel pit immediately to the SE. The area is completely overgrown in scrub and the existence of a monument cannot be determined. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 26 February 2018 - MO026-008001: Hilltop enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMO026-008001-. Located on top of a drumlin. A large subcircular area is described in gothic lettering as ‘Ancient Burial Ground’ on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map and as a disused Grave Yard in italic lettering on the 1907 edition. This is a large subcircular grass-covered area (dims 111m NW-SE; 91m NE-XW) defined by a scarp (at W: Wth 1.8m; H 1.8m) and hedge. A small bulbous extension at NW (diam. c. 30m) is defined by the same scarp and hedge SW-NW-ENE but it is an integral part of the larger enclosure. The interior and its extension are bisected by a NW-SE field bank and drain, and the ground slopes down steeply to the NE on the NE side of this feature but is more level to the SW. There are entrance gaps at W, NW, NNW and ENE that are probably all modern. A small enclosure (MO026-008002-) against the perimeter at SE-S is probably the burial ground rather than the whole of the large enclosure. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 26 February 2018 - MO026-008002: Burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMO026-008002-. Situated on top of a drumlin, and against the perimeter of hilltop enclosure (MO026-008001-) at SE-S. This is a D-shaped overgrown area (dims 23.5m NE-SW; 22m NW-SE) defined by an earth and stone bank (at NNW: Wth of base 3.2m; Wth of top 1m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.4m) SW-N-E backing onto the perimeter of the hilltop enclosure E-SW, with an entrance (Wth 2m) at N. The interior has some stones which may have served as grave-markers. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 26 February 2018 - MO026-009: Megalithic tomb - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMO026-009----. Situated on a rise in a fairly low-lying landscape. A cairn (L c. 21m; Wth 11m) is aligned NNW-SSE. At N a sidestone supports a large displaced roof stone, perhaps representing a chamber opening to the N. Close to this, three set stones represent a subsidiary chamber opening to the W. The monument is unclassified, although it is likely to be either of the court-or portal-tomb classes. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Located on a shoulder that is on the SE-facing spine of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. An earthwork at this location in Corgreagh is represented on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793) and on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is an oval overgrown area (dims 34m NNW-SSE; 27.5m E-W) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth of base 6-10m; int. H 0.9-1.4m; ext. H 2.7-3.6m) that is almost reduced to a scarp SSW-NW and NNE-SE, and an outer rounded fosse (at SSE Wth of top 5.2m; ext. D 1m) ESE-SW that is largely reduced to a berm (at NNW: Wth 4m) elsewhere. An outer, flat-topped bank (at SSE: Wth of base 4.6m; Wth of top 2m; ext. H 0.9m) survives E-S. There is an entrance through the inner bank (Wth of base c. 1.5m) and a causeway (Wth of top 2.8m; H 0.85m) at SE, but the outer bank blocks it. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
