Situated on top of a drumlin. This enclosure is depicted on McCrea’s map of Co. Monaghan (1793). The enclosure is a large subcircular area (int. dims 95m N-S; 85m E-W) planted with mature deciduous trees, which is defined by an earthen bank (at S: Wth c. 10m; int. H c. 2m; ext. H c. 3.5m) and outer fosse (at S: Wth of top c. 10m; ext. D c. 1m). The original entrance (Wth of base 3.5m) is at ESE. The enclosure was the location of a skirmish which took place on March 13, 1688 (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 657; Shirley 1879, 130), although the year might be 1689 or 1690, between John McKenna and Mathew Anketell, who had relieved a Protestant population at Glaslough. Although it was a minor encounter both principals lost their lives as a result of it, Anketell on the field and McKenna in captivity. A metal-detection survey carried out for Dr. Siobhán McDermott as part of a PhD thesis in NUI Galway identified two clusters of metal alloy signals, thought to represent lead shot, outside the E edge of the enclosure, which was McKenna’s position, and on a small N-S ridge c. 200m to the E. Entrance gateway to Castle Leslie at west side of demesne, erected c.1878, comprising two pairs of square-plan piers to central vehicular entrance and flanking pedestrian entrances, sinusoidal-curved quadrant plinths walls and railings and similar, but rusticated, outer piers to road. Ashlar limestone to piers, each having moulded plinth, string course and cornice, fluted frieze, and steep concave pyramidal cap topped by rusticated ball finial. Ornate cast-iron railings on squared random rock-faced plinths with carved copings and having low buttresses to demesne side topped by bracing scrolled wrought-iron brackets to rear. Detached three-bay single-storey complex-plan limestone-built Jacobean-style gate lodge, built c.1878, two-bay projection to north-east-facing entrance elevation and one-bay projection with dormer window to rear. Pitched slate roof with red clay-ware sawtooth ridge cresting, ashlar chimneystacks with carved string courses and cornices, carved curvilinear gables to all elevations and over entrance, having carved stone finials. Square-profile cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative brackets and hoppers. Squared coursed rock-faced masonry with ashlar dressed quoins and chamfered plinth course. Carved limestone Leslie insignia over doorway comprising 'J L', demi-griffin and motto 'GRIP FAST', and carved shields with oak leaves and chain device set into recesses having moulded surrounds. Square-headed transom-and-mullion window openings with block-and-start ashlar surrounds, relieving arches above with rock-faced voussoirs, and with timber windows. Square-headed door opening with block-and-start ashlar surround and moulded reveal, replacement timber door, and flight of cut-stone steps with low cut-stone parapets with arrises to copings. Lych gate to graveyard, dated 1892, comprising rectangular-plan structure of square-plan timber posts atop concrete plinth, supporting timber king-post roof with chamfered corners to structural members, pitched tiled roof with pointed timber finials and carved timber bargeboards with quotation from bible and date '1892'. Double-leaf wrought-iron gate to road end of structure with dressed square-plan piers having rounded caps, and with stile to north side. Lych gate gives access to rectangular-plan graveyard, walls of which are of rubble limestone with rock-faced coping stones. Three-bay two-storey house, built c.1880, with recessed central bay to front, three-bay return to rear, and recent single-storey glazed timber porch to front entrance. Pitched slate roof, with yellow brick chimneystacks, stone eaves course and decorative timber bargeboards with timber finials. Dressed limestone walls built to courses with tuck and flush pointing, and cut-stone quoins, roughcast rendered walls to north and east elevations.
