Located in the N, bulbous (dims c. 330-c. 400m) end of Rahans Lough (L c. 1km N-S) c. 90-100m from the N and E shores. Five silver shillings of Queen Mary dating from 1553-4 but fused into a single mass were found on a crannog at Rahans in 1863 (Dolley 1970, 218), and since then some quernstones (Lucas 1962, 157), a number of bronze pins, a ploughshare, a hone and other articles from the lough that were acquired by the National Museum of Ireland from the Shirley collection (Lucas 1968), may have come from this feature which is depicted as a small island (diam. c. 10m) on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is a small overgrown platform cairn (diam. 14m; H 0.7m over water) built around rock outcrop (L 5m) on the W side. There is no timber construction visible although it has been described thus (Boylan 1967, 362-3), but there were animal bones on the W shore. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 27 June 2017 - MO034-011: Crannog, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CMO034-011----. Situated in the shallows on the NE shoreline of Rahans Lough (L c. 1km N-S; c. 80-160m E-W), which has a bulbous (dims c. 330-c. 400m) northern end. This is a small cairn (diam. 5m; H 0.2m over water) but the cairn extends below the water level (D 0.5-1m) c. 10m to the W and S. This is probably the small crannog described by Boylan (1967, 362-3) in 1954 as having timbers when a dug-out canoe was discovered in the lake. There were no structural timbers visible in 1983, but animal bones were present. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 27 July 2017 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) - Farmyard complex, 1780–1820, Regional interest, registry number 41403409, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=MO®no=41403409. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
