Located on top of a drumlin in the demesne of Rossmore Castle. This is a raised circular area that is now grass-covered (diam. 39m N-S; 37.5m E-W) but had been deployed as a tree-ring. It was defined by a scarp (at E: Wth 2.3m; H 1.5m; at W: H 2.15m), with traces of an external fosse or drain (Wth of base 1.1m; D 0.45m) E-SW. An entrance gap (Wth of top 5.4m) at SSE is now blocked. Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge, built c.1870, having attic storey, gabled porch to front (north-east) elevation, canted bay window to north-west elevation, and gabled return with lean-to extension to rear. Now in use as private house. Pitched slate roof having cast-iron rainwater goods, rooflights, rendered chimneystacks, overhanging eaves, and timber bargeboards. Snecked squared sandstone rubble walls, with dressed quoins and tooled stone plinth course. Rendered walls to extension. Tooled sandstone crest with figure of rampant lion over entrance door. Square-headed window openings having tooled sandstone surrounds, and bipartite and tripartite leaded windows with timber mullions. Square-headed window openings to return, having render sills and replacement timber or uPVC windows. Bay window has round-headed leaded lights, painted tooled stone mullions and sill, stone apron. Tudor-arch entrance doorway, having painted tooled stone surround, and replacement timber door and overlight, opening onto stone paving having cast-iron boot-scraper. Square-headed door opening to south-east elevation with glazed timber door. Boundary hedge surrounding gate lodge, terminating in double-leaf steel vehicular gate flanked by square-plan rendered piers to east. - Rossmore Castle, gates/railings/walls, 1860–1880, Regional interest, registry number 41400975, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=MO®no=41400975. Freestanding gateway, erected c.1870, at entrance to Rossmore Castle. Comprises pair of square-plan channelled dressed limestone piers to each side of verhicular entrance, with moulded cornices and stepped cappings, with moulded bases, and supporting decorative double-leaf cast-iron gate. Piers flanked by short sections of dressed snecked limestone walling with crenellated copings and having decorative wrought-iron scrolls to piers, flanked in turn by square-headed pedestrian entrances having tooled stone pilasters with moulded plinth bases supporting dressed stone lintel and pedimented cornice over, with decorative single-leaf cast-iron gates. Carved timber bargeboards and finials to gable ends and to porch. Exposed red brick walls of varying tones, with tooled limestone quoins. Square-headed window openings throughout, having limestone and sandstone block-and-start surrounds with chamfered reveals, and with replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed door opening to porch, having timber panelled door with chamfered limestone and sandstone block-and-start jambs and lintel.
