Located in a bay (dims c. 200m NE-SW; c. 120m NW-SE) on the SE shore of the small oval S part (dims c. 540m NE-SW; c. 220m NW-SE) of Black Lough. This is represented as a large island (dims c. 45m NW-SE; c. 35m NE-SW) on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is an overgrown platform (diam. 20m; H 0.7m over the water) composed of small stones. W of the crannog about fifteen piles can be seen in the water. Situated on the summit of a drumlin. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 33.5m NNE-SSW; 28m WNW-ESE) defined by an earthen bank (at SSW: Wth 9m; int. H 1.6m; ext. H 3.2m) which is largely reduced to a scarp (at NNE: Wth 4m; H 3m) and hedge separated by a rounded fosse (at SSW: Wth of top 9.7m; ext. D 1.8m) from an outer bank (Wth of base 3.5-6m; ext. H 1-1.8m) and hedge. There is a large depression, probably an old quarry inside the perimeter at S, and there are some tree-stumps in the interior. A modern field bank is built against the outer face of the outer bank NW-NE-SSE, and there is an external fosse (Wth of top 3.8m; ext. D 0.2m) recut as a field drain outside the outer bank SSE-W. The entrance through the inner (Wth of base 2.2m) and outer (Wth c. 7m) banks with a causeway (Wth of top 4.9m; H 1.3m) is at NE. Located at the crest of the S and SE-facing slopes of a drumlin, and overlooking Lough Bane, the W shore of which is c. 180m to the SE. A circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 45m) is depicted on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as a ‘fort’, and it is depicted a circular hachured feature on the 1907 edition. This is a circular overgrown area (diam. c. 28m) surrounded by an earthen bank with traces of external fosse. The entrance is at SE. Full-width single-storey addition to rear with lean-to roof, and single-storey lean-to extension to south gable and having two bays advancing to front (west) of building. Pitched corrugated-iron roof, with metal-framed rectangular roof-lights, corrugated-iron cladding to roof and walls of addition. Exposed rubble limestone walls to front elevation, harl-rendered to north gable, rendered to south addition, and corrugated-iron clad to rear addition. Square-headed window openings with timber louvres and stone sills. Square-headed door openings with timber battened doors. Freestanding handball alley, built 1932, having higher wall to north end, sloped east and west walls, and lower wall to south end. Mass concrete staircase leading to viewing platform at south.
