Located at the crest of the S-facing slope of a drumlin, and known locally as ‘Garland’s Fort’. This is a subcircular grass and scrub-covered area (dims 36m N-S; 30.8m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 6-9m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 2.5-3m) separated by a fosse (Wth of base 1-1,2m; ext. D 0.3-0.9m) from a slight counterscarp bank (Wth 2-3m; ext. H 0.2-0.4m) that survives S-W-NNE. There are gaps in the inner bank at NNE and ESE; the latter (Wth of base 2m) with a causeway is probably the original entrance. The entrance to souterrain (MO028-139002-) is visible NW of the centre. Rath (MO032-001----) is c. 180m to the ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Situated NW of the centre of the rath (MO028-139001-). The water-filled entrance to a drystone walled passage with a lintelled roof is visible, but the passage is inaccessible. A stone (dims c. 0.3m x c. 0.3m) with some indecipherable writing on it was found at what is known as the well (Kelly 1890-1) but the whereabouts of this stone is not known now. There was reputed to be a giant’s grave ‘nine yards by two yards (dims c. 2.75m x c. 1.8m)’ nearby (ibid.), which is probably a description of the souterrain passage. These features are recorded in the folk knowledge of the School’s Manuscripts, for which see this web-page accessed on 13/07/2017: http://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4742042/4730236 The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). Located towards the bottom of the SE-facing slope of drumlin. This is an approximately circular grass and scrub-covered area (dims 33.4m E-W; 28.6m N-S) that slopes down to the E (H 2.8m) and is defined by an earthen bank (at SE: Wth of base 2.4m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.8m) separated by a fosse or berm (at SE: Wth 3.4m) from an outer earthen bank (at SE: Wth of base 5.4m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.6m) with bushes. The outer bank is incorporated into a field bank W-NW and there is a drain outside the outer bank S-W, but the inner bank tends to be reduced to an internal scarp (H 0.4m) W-N. There are several gaps through the banks, but the original entrance may have been at E (Wth 2.3m). Rath (MO031-022----) is on top of the drumlin c. 180m to the WNW. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
