Situated at the summit of a WNW-ESE drumlin ridge. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 35m NW-SE; 34m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank separated by a fosse from an outer bank, which has an outer stone facing SSE-NW. The original entrance through the inner (Wth of base 2.2m) and outer (Wth of base 2.3m) banks and the causeway (Wth of base 2.4m; H 0.45m) are at ESE. Situated at the S tip of a N-S spur. This rath is depicted on McCrea’s Map of County Monaghan (1793) and on the OS 6-inch maps. It is a grass and rush-covered circular area (diam. 49m WNW-ESE; 47m NNW-SSE) defined by three overgrown earthen banks with two intervening fosses. The innermost bank (Wth of base 10-12m; int. H 1m at NNW to 2m at SSE; ext. H 3m at SSE to 4m at NNW) is separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 10-12m normally to 16m at SSE; ext. D 2-2.5m) from the middle earthen bank (Wth of base 7-10m; ext. H 1.15m-2m). This bank is levelled into the inner fosse in places creating a berm (Wth 8-9m) between a reduced inner fosse (Wth of base 2-3m; ext. D 0.5m) to a smaller middle bank (int. H 0.5m) particularly at W-NW and E-SE. The middle bank is separated by an external fosse (Wth of top 6m at NNW to 12m at WNW; ext. D 1m) from the third outermost bank (Wth 3-6m; ext. H 0.3-1m) that appears to be original (max. ext. dims 124m WNW-ESE; 95m NNW-SSE). The outermost bank is best preserved ESE-SSW, but it has been pushed into the fosse inside it SSW-WSW and heightened into a stone-faced field bank WSW-NE. The entrance through the inner (Wth of base 1.5m) bank with a causeway (Wth of top 3.8m; H 0.8m) and the outermost (Wth of base 3.2m) bank is at E but this area of the middle bank is disturbed. Single-storey to rear elevation. Now in use as outbuilding. Pitched slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods, clay ridge tiles and with roof-lights to rear. Pitched corrugated-iron roof to extension to west gable, barrel-shaped corrugated-iron roof to extension to rear. Rubble stone walls. Timber-framed metal nameplate over door to front elevation reading 'Drogheda...' Break to front indicating two phase construction. Square-headed window openings to front having red brick surrounds and timber casement windows, six-over-six pane timber sliding sash window to ground floor. Elliptical carriage arches with single-leaf timber battened sliding doors with cast-iron wheels to front elevation. Corner-sited two-storey house, built c.1860, having three-bay first floor and four-bay ground floor, with shopfronts to front (south) and east elevations, gable-fronted two-storey addition recessed to east, having lean-to open-sided shelter to east side, and with outbuildings to rear. Pitched slate roof with yellow brick chimneystacks, cast-iron rainwater goods, timber bargeboards and exposed timber eaves brackets. Roughcast rendered walls, with smooth raised render plinth course and moulded render string course. Timber shopfronts comprising square-headed door openings with vertically-divided display windows with elliptical heads to lights, tripartite to front and bipartite to east, main openings flanked by timber pilasters supporting fasciaboards with moulded cornices, painted render sills and render risers. Timber battened door to front and boarded-up doorway to east, with over-lights. Square-headed window openings, those to front and to ground floor to west having bipartite one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows, with internal bars to some ground floor windows, windows elsewhere being replacement uPVC, all with raised render reveals and painted stone sills. Square-headed door opening to front serving house, having raised render reveal, timber panelled door and over-light. Gable-fronted two-storey outbuilding to west of rear of house, adjoining boundary wall enclosing yard to rear, with pitched slate roof, red brick chimneystacks, rubble stone walls, square-headed window opening to first floor to front with red brick surround and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash window. Gable-fronted outbuilding has pitched slate roof with red brick chimneystack, roughcast rendered wall to front elevation, moulded render string course atop raised render plinth course, rubble stone under canopy, square-headed window openings, that to front having fixed timber window with internal cast-iron bars, and square-headed door opening to front with double-leaf timber battened door with concrete and stone steps. Outbuilding set perpendicular to outbuilding to east, having pitched corrugated-iron roof and rendered walls. Double-leaf wrought-iron gate providing access to yard. Set at road junction, opposite warehouse. - Shantonagh Garda Síochána Station, RIC barracks, 1870–1890, Regional interest, registry number 41402720, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=MO®no=41402720. Semi-detached three-bay two-storey constabulary barracks, built c.1880, having lean-to single-storey addition to rear (south) elevation. Now in use as Garda station. Pitched slate roof with yellow brick chimneystacks, terracotta ridge cresting, cast-iron rainwater goods, timber bargeboards and exposed rafter ends. Lined-and-ruled rendered walling to front elevation with render quoins, and roughcast rendered walls elsewhere. Cast-iron Garda Síochána crest on timber plaque over door to front. Square-headed window openings, with render reveals and painted masonry sills and replacement uPVC windows and door. Two detached multiple-bay two-storey outbuildings, built c.1860, arranged in L-plan. Pitched slate roofs with cast-iron rainwater goods, render copings, timber bargeboards, and clay ridge tiles. Rubble stone walls with roughly squared quoins. Square-headed window openings to first floor to front and segmental-headed openings to ground floor, with red brick surrounds and dressed stone sills, with glazed panels. Segmental-headed door openings to south-east elevation of building to south and to south-west elevation of building to north, with timber battened doors and red brick surrounds. Segmental carriage arch to south-east elevation of each building having timber battened sliding door with cast-iron wheels. Square-headed door opening to north-east gable with timber battened door, stone steps. Double-leaf wrought-iron gate set to rendered engaged piers between buildings. Detached eight-bay three-storey corn mill, built c.1840, having single-storey lean-to to rear (west) elevation. Now disused. Rubble stone walls, with vestiges of render visible and having some cement render to ground floor to front (east) elevation. Square-headed window and door openings, some having timber fittings and red brick relieving arches above.
