Situated on a low rise of ground on flat pasture, 330m S of the River Brosna. This monument is not depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map but is depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork or flat-topped platform on the 1908 ed. OS 6-inch map. Today the monument consists of a low elongated mound (dims. 25m E-W; 20m N-S; ext. H 1m) with precipitous N end and gradually sloping E end. Possibly a natural mound that has been adapted for some unknown function. The monument was surveyed in 1977 and then described as, 'a small subcircular earthwork built around a slight natural rise or outcrop. The edge of the rise had been scarped to form a low embankment, much of this embankment has been eroded away & broken down. Outside there are very slight remains of a shallow fosse. The field bank cuts close to the site on the SW side & part of the earthwork appears to have been cut away to accomodate the field bank. The interior rises gently towards the centre. There are no features of archaeological significance visible in the interior. The diam.[eter] of the earthwork east-west is approx. 25m. This earthwork is in flat pasture land with good views in all directions' (SMR File 1977). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by Caimin O'Brien Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2011 - OF009-001: Ringfort - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF009-001----. Situated in flat poorly drained land, commanding good views in all directions. Natural mound (diam. 25m; ext. H 2m) rising out of the surrounding marshland, enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank with no evidence of an external fosse or entrance feature. The site is densely overgrown with vegetation making detailed examination impossible. Depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map as an irregular-shaped enclosure and as a sub-triangular-shaped enclosure on the revised 1908 ed. OS 6-inch map. In 1942 the ITA Survey recorded this monument as a 'Fort' and described it as being situated on 'a low ridge surrounded by depressions on E, S and W, prob[ably] due to streams, and so forming a sort of promontory. Good view over nearly level plain. Good pasture. The promontory runs N-S and is much overgrown with old thorns. It is divided by a low bank about 1' (0.3m) high and a fosse to N, 5' (1.5m) wide runniong ESE-WNW. To the south of this is a level ridge for 25 yds. (22.5m), then at the S end of promontory a raised area 1½' high (0.45m) on N and 5' (1.5m) high out of the plain on S, measuring 5 yds. (4.5m) N-S x 13 yds. (11.7m) E-W. On the steep S face are a good many stones, and what appears to be lime-mortar among them, so there may have been a building here, while the bank enclosed a courtyard. The old thorns suggest a gentle place, but there is certainly nothing like the marked ring-fort shown on O.S. [Ordnance Survey]. I find it difficult to interpret the place' (ITA Survey 1942, SMR File). In 1977 this monument was described as, an 'earthwork & the surrounding area are badly overgrown with bushes & briars, making detailed examination difficult. The earthwork appears to be subcircular in shape & is outlined by remains of a slight bank. On south the bank is set on a low counterscarp embankment. On north & east there is a shallow fosse outside the bank while on the west side the perimeter consists of a low embankment. The interior is fairly even & appears to be featureless. This earthwork is on a gentle rise in flat pasture land which is moderately drained. There are good views of the surrounding countryside from the earthwork' (SMR file 1977). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Today there are no surface remains visible of this levelled monument. Depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map as a triangular shaped enclosure, 110m S of a similar-shaped possible ringfort (OF009-001----). This monument is not depicted on the revised 1908 ed. OS 6-inch map. Described in 1977 a destroyed monument that 'was sited on a gentle low rise in flat pasture land. The site has been ploughed recently' (SMR file 1977). Situated on a natural gravel ridge in undulating countryside. Only the wall foundations of a rectangular shaped building (14m N-S; 22m E-W) possibly a castle survive built on top of a rectangular earthwork, with a causewayed entrance at S (Wth 2.5m) which crosses the enclosing moat (Wth 2m; D 3m). There is slight evidence of an external bank at E only. The walls are constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble and on average measure 1.5m thick and stand 0.5m high. There are the remains of a corner tower on the NW angle of the building with evidence of a garderobe chute (0.4m x 0.4m). There is evidence of a base batter on the external wall at this corner. Overall the site appears to consist of a medieval castle of rectangular ground plan with NW corner tower and causeway entrance at S, all of which is enclosed by a deep moat with possible outer bank. This site may be built on an earlier medieval ringwork or ringfort. According to local information this was the site of Hugh de Lacy's castle (ITA Survey 1942). Situated on a natural ridge in undulating countryside with good views in all directions with two nearby ringforts (OF009-008009; OF009-009----) to the E and SE respectively. Sub-circular shaped platform (diam 20m N-S by 19m E-W; H 1.5m) enclosed by a low earthen bank with stone revetment visible at N with no evidence of an enclosing fosse or external bank. Possible entrance gap at S, overgrowth makes it difficult to be certain.
