Formerly situated in poorly drained just E of the Fuarawn river, with earthwork (OF039-024----) 140m to the E. No surface remains visible, site was levelled in 1978 (Cunningham 1978, 127). Cunningham (1987, 126-7) described this levelled monument as a raised circular-shaped earthwork (H 5m; top diam. 40m) enclosed at its base by a fosse. Depicted as a circular earthwork or platform on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. On the revised 25-inch OS map the monument is shown as a circular enclosure, possibly a ringfort [raised rath type], consisting of a raised interior enclosed by an earthen bank reduced to a scarp from N to E and an external fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 30 December 2011 - OF039-034: Earthwork, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF039-034----. No surface remains of monument that was levelled in 1978 (Cunningham 1987, 127). The monument was described by Cunningham as a raised sub-rectangular shaped earthwork or platform (H 2m; 34m E-W; 27m N-S). Depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch maps as a circular earthwork or platform which was located 140m E of a possible ringfort (OF039-033----). The proximity of the site to both Glebe Rectory and Ballycurragh House, along with the presence of trees planted around the perimeter of the monument suggests that this earthwork may have been a tree-ring of 18th/19th century date. Alternatively this earthwork may have been an earlier monument that was re-used as a landscape feature in the 18th/19th century. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Situated within the floodplain of the Fuarawn river which lies to the W of site. Rectangular-shaped platform earthwork (ext. dims E-W 15.60m x 34m N-S) with no evidence of an enclosing bank or fosse and no entrance feature. The summit of the mound (dims. 24m x 8m) is quite level. It is not clear if this earthwork may have been the site of a crannog described in 1979 as, 'in the townland of Ballycurragh; all that remains now is an oval platform of clay in the bog' (Feehan 1979, 94). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Situated on a low ridge in undulating countryside. Poorly preserved bivallate ringfort which now survives as a circular area (diam 50m) defined by two poorly preserved earthen banks visible from S to W only with intervening fosse (Wth 13m). A field wall intersects S side of site destroying the enclosing banks. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). On a slight terrace on the W side of a ridge in undulating countryside. Roughly circular mound (H 1.5m; diam. 7m E-W; diam. 5.5m N-S ) enclosed by a wide fosse (Wth 2m) which is barely discernible with external bank (Wth 1m; ext. H 0.5m).
