Situated on N facing slope of high ground with good extensive views. Large circular area (diam 40m N-S) enclosed by a well preserved earth and stone bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.7m) with wide flat bottomed fosse (Wth 3m; ext. D 1m) and external bank (Wth 1.6m; ext. H 0.5m) visible from S through W to N. No entrance feature visible. Modern road intersects external bank at E. Described in 1991 as 'The interior which measures about 38m in diameter crest to crest is relatively level though there is a slight rise around the centre. The bank is c. 4m wide and up to 1m high above the interior. The ditch is some 4m wide and up to 0.,6-0.8m deep below exterior levels. There is a concentric field fence immediately outisde the ditch to the west and south and there are trees and bushes on it and also on the ringfort bank. There is a gap in the bank some 2.5m wide facing north-north-east with traces of a causeway outside it across the ditch which is not greatly in evidence at this point. This appears to be the original entrance. On the opposite side facing south-south-west the ditch appears to have been deepened and widened into the bank in modern times possibly to make a drinking place for animals. There is only 6m between the outer edge of the ringfort bank and the west side of the roadside wall' (SMR file 1991). Not visible at ground level. Hachured as large circular enclosure on 1912 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Archaeological testing carried out by Martin Doody in 2007 under licence No. 07E1022. The proposed development at Ballylin, Ferbane, Co. Offaly, consists of a two-storey extension to an existing dwelling, a separate private garage, septic tank and percolation area. The development was the subject of an earlier grant of planning, which was granted without archaeological conditions. Much of the work on the house extension was undertaken at this earlier period. The work was, however, not completed and the grant of planning lapsed without completion of the project. A further application was made to complete the project, which was turned down due to concerns about the existing septic tank. A third application is now being made to the planning authority. The proposed development lies within the confines of the archaeological buffer zone around OF014–012---- (enclosure site). No trace of the monument is visible on the ground today but its outline is visible on aerial photographs in the field to the south of the proposed development. Test-trenches on the area of the site that remains to be developed produced nothing of archaeological significance (Bennett 2010, 395). Above this doorway there is a poorly preserved coat of arms (OF015-008004-) with a large stone mortar which has four semicircular lugs (OF015-008005-). All these remains possibly came from the destroyed late medieval church (OF014-031002-) near Kilreghan cemetery. Situated on top of a natural ridge in undulating countryside. Appears as a natural ridge with no evidence of any archaeological activity. Local farmer informed us that he found a skeleton several years ago while digging on the ridge. According to local information this is the site of a famine burial ground. Pair of gates lodges and entrance gates to former Ballylin House, c.1830. Located on roadside. Pair of tooled limestone octagonal gate piers with decoratively carved cap stones supporting pair of wrought-iron gates and flanked by entrance gates to gate lodges supported by smaller piers. Entrance gates flanked by squared limestone walls terminating in similar piers. Detached four-bay single-storey gate lodge to south with projecting gabled end bays and extension to rear. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, red brick chimneystack and open eaves. Pebbledashed walls with smooth rendered plinth and stucco molded string course. Bow windows to gabled projecting bay with timber casement windows. Square-headed door opening with timber battened door. Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge to north with hipped slate roof, decorative scalloped eaves board and pebbledashed walls. Square-headed window openings with timber casement windows and cast-iron pivot windows.

Ranges of former outbuildings to Ballylin House, c.1820, arranged around a yard with walled gardens to south. Six-bay two-storey range to east of yard in use as house with hipped slate roof, terracotta ridge tiles and pebbledashed walls. Square-headed window openings with timber sash windows and replacement door set into projecting entrance porch. Multi-bay two-storey ranges of outbuildings with pitched slate roofs and roughcast rendered walls terminating in bellcote to west range. Square-headed window and door openings with brick vents and carriage arch openings. Carved limestone coat of arms on plaques over carriage arch opening. Random coursed limestone and brick walled garden to south with additional outbuildings within. Limestone entrance to walled garden with carved limestone plaque above and limestone architectural elements incorporated.
