Circular steep-sided mound (H 2.9m, Diam at top c. 14m) with wide fosse (max. W. 14m, D. c. 1.50m) around on all but W side where it has been filled in. At the SE of the motte there appeared to be a very large bailey defined by a fosse on one side and a scarp on the other visited 13-06-91 and found to have been levelled. On small hillock in good pasture land overlooking bog to the N with church (OF011-005001-) nearby. No surface trace visible of levelled mound depicted on OS 6-inch map as a subcircular shaped mound. Local landowner described the site as a circular mound (approx. H 3-4m; diam 30 - 40m) with low berm enclosing the base of the mound. Bulldozed in the mid-1980s, animal bones were found within it, and ash spreads with charcoal were found both within and around the mound. Possible burial mound. Comerford (1883, 324) described the site as a large mound. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. In centre of graveyard (OF011-005002-), are the poorly preserved ruins of a small rectangular church (ext. dims. 8.3m E-W, 15.5m N-S; wall T 0.85m) with featureless rubble built walls only standing to a height of 2-3m. Near W end of S wall is a small doorway with pointed arch with date of 1460 cut into it. No remains of windows. Probably late medieval parish church. Described by Comerford in 1883 as 'The old parochial church still survives in ruins: portions of the four walls remaining' (Comerford 1883, 324). By the middle of the 16th century this church was a chapel of ease or a sinecure chapel. The church ruins were described in 1943 by O. Davies as 'The ruins are roughly 18 yds. (16.45m) long by 9 yards (8.2m) wide, highest wall being about 12 ft. (3.65m). These walls are 4ft. (1.2m) thick' (ITA Survey 1943). The church was surveyed and described by J.F. Reynolds in 1981 as 'The ruin of a small rectangular church built of limestone rubble and measuring 15.5m east-west by 8.3m north-south. The west wall remains to a height of 3m-3.5m while parts of the north and south walls remain to a height of 2m-2.5m. Only fragments of the east wall remain. Near the west end of the south wall is a small pointed doorway, built of well dressed limestone blocks. No remains of windows exist. The interior of the church is filled with tombstones' (ASI fieldnotes 1981). There is a recumbent late medieval graveslab (OF011-005003-) at the base of the W wall of the church. This church is indicated on the Down Survey (1655-6) map of the region, associated with Ballybrittan castle (OF011-006----) which is 1.6km to the southwest of the church (Loeber 1988. Vol. 1, 33-4). Although referred to as a parochial church by Rev. Comerford in his history of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, by the middle of the 16th century this building was a chapel of ease or a sinecure chapel associated with the parochial church of Ballyburley (OF004-013----) which is 3.2km to the northwest of Ballymacwilliam (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 129, 163). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In centre of graveyard, poorly preserved ruins of a small rectangular church (OF011-005001-) with pointed two centred door at W end of S wall. Date of 1460 AD carved on soffit of door may be a later insertion. The jambs of the door are decorated with a punch dressed margin. Interior of church used as part of graveyard making examination difficult due to the presence of several headstones. Headstones in graveyard date to the 18th and 19th-centuries. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Large graveslab of 16th or 17th century date which was first described by Rev. Comerford in 1883 as 'At the south-east end there is a Gothic door-way, on the turn of the arch of which, on the inside, the date, A.D. 1460, is as clearly cut as if engraved but recently. Within the walls, at the east end, there is a head-stone having upon it elaborate armorial bearings, but no discoverable inscription.' (Comerford 1883, 324). This slab was recorded by O. Davies in 1943 as 'Within the walls, at the east end a headstone lies on the ground with elaborate armorial bearings in relief on one end. There is no discoverable inscription.' (ITA Survey 1943). This armorial slab was mistakenly recorded as being located at the east end of the church (OF011-005001-) when it is actiually located at the west end of the church lying flat on the surface of the ground. This recumbent limestone slab is located at the centre of the base of the west wall of the church interior. There is an armorial shield carved in relief at the top of the slab and the rest of the slab is uninscribed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
