Subcircular enclosure (max. dims. 27.2m E-W, 23.5m N-S) defined by a scarp and slight fosse outside. No evidence for an entrance. Situated in lowlying area. Subcircular shaped platform (diam 26m; ext. H 0.5m) enclosed by earthen bank (W 0.5m; ext. H 0.9m) with no evidence of an enclosing fosse or entrance feature situated on low-lying land. Remains of standing stone rectangular in plan (0.70m x 0.40m; c. 2.30m high originally) now broken in two and appears to have been that way for a considerable time. Situated on an elevated site, has tapering top orientated N-S when it was erect. On an area of raised ground in an otherwise low-lying field. Broken stone which is now lying in two pieces. The top half measures 1.5m x 0.75m and is 0.4m wide and has a slanted top. The bottom half measures 0.5m x 0.75m and is 0.5m wide. When erect the stone was orientated N-S. According to Comerford (1883, 322) the local people believed there was a church site located in this area. Not marked on first two editions of the OS 6-inch maps. Stone has disappeared and local informant said it was buried in the ground nearby the original site. Not visible at ground level. According to local information the stone was buried in the field it was located in. Located in well drained pasture on NE facing slope of rising ground with nearby standing stone to SW (OF010-014----). Not marked on first two editions of OS 6-inch maps. Test excavation was carried out by Dominic Delany under licence no. 00E0866 at the site of a proposed dwelling on 11 November, in response to a request for further information from Offaly County Council. The site lies c. 1km south-east of the archaeological complex at Croghan Hill and is within the area of constraint around the possible site of a standing stone. The stone stood c. 50m east of the proposed dwelling and, according to local information, now lies buried in the field in which it formerly stood. A second standing stone (SMR 10:14) lies c. 100m south-west of the site. Four test-trenches were excavated on the footprint of the proposed development. The topsoil, 0.7m thick, directly overlay bedrock and natural sand and gravel deposits. No archaeological material was discovered. Univallate ringfort (max. int. diam. 43.5m E-W) situated on summit of N-S ridge E face and defined by a fosse and internal bank of earth and stone. Ramped entrance at SE. No evidence of burial but small mound (diam. 4.5m N-S, H c. 0.5m) in NE quadrant may have some connection. Located on the E facing slope of a N-S ridge in upland area with good views of undulating countryside. Bivallate ringfort (OF010-016002-) with small earthen mound located in the N sector of the sites interior which according to local information is the site of a childrens burial ground. Located on the E facing slope of a N-S ridge in upland area with good views of undulating countryside. Bivallate ringfort with small earthen mound located in the N sector of the sites interior which according to local information is the site of a childrens burial ground (OF010-016001-). The site consists of a circular area (diam 48m) enclosed by an earthen bank (W 3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1m); fosse (Wth 1m; ext. D 1m) and partially preserved external bank (ext. This is one of a number of sites running along the line of a possible palaeo-channel orientated in a N direction across the bog, which includes SMR OF010-414----, 20m to the N, and SMR OF010-410----, 11m to the S. A dispersed deposit of fragmentary mixed brushwood (L 0.3m max.), twigs and a stake (L 3.9m; Wth 2.2m; D 0.1m min.). The site is very disturbed and may represent the remains of a more substantial structure. A single stake is located on the N side of the site and there is a small concentration of twigs on the S side. Two degraded worked ends, a wedge point and a chisel point, are evident on the stake and a piece of brushwood, respectively. The wood is in poor condition and set in well-humified Sphagnum peat with some Eriophorum and ericaceous remains. An irregular scatter (L 1.94m; Wth 1.08m; D 0.07m) of six pieces of fragmentary brushwood (diam. 0.025-0.05m) and a light roundwood. There is no apparent structure and the site has been disturbed by milling. The wood is in moderate condition and set in well-humified Sphagnum peat. This is one of a number of sites running along the line of a possible palaeo-channel orientated in a N direction across the bog, which includes SMR OF010-410----, 23m to the N, and SMR OF010-386----, 11m to the S. The wood is in moderate condition and set in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with some Eriophorum. This is one of a number of sites running along the line of a possible palaeo-channel orientated in a N direction across the bog, which includes SMR OF010-385---- located 11m to the N. The site (L 3.15m; Wth 3.37m; D 0.08m) consists of four roundwoods laid NE-SW with two further roundwoods orientated NW-SE. The overall site orientation is indiscernible. In addition to this there are a number of irregularly laid pieces of brushwood. Bordering this material are a number of posts and stakes. The site is in very poor condition with the uppermost elements surviving only as pieces of bark, the wood being almost entirely milled away. The site (L 6m min.; Wth 1.08m; D 0.06m) consists of four roundwoods and c. thirty-two pieces of brushwood. The elements are densely laid and the majority run in a NW-SE direction. The site is in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with Phragmites and possible Menyanthes seeds. Radiocarbon dated to 1365-919 cal. BC (UCD 0219). This is one of a number of sites running along the line of a possible palaeo-channel orientated in a N direction across the bog, including SMR OF010-396---- to the N. The site (Wth 2.05m; D 0.55m) consists of over forty pieces of densely packed light brushwood and twigs. The overall orientation of the site is indiscernible. The deposit is curved in form and is more concentrated on its E extent, where it is up to seven pieces deep. Within the site the elements are generally overlapping, orientated WNW-ESE and N-S. The condition of the wood is variable but is particularly poor where the site is deepest. Woodworking is evidenced by branch-trimming and a half-split timber. The site is in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with ericaceous remains and fibrous roots. Radiocarbon dated to 1108-800 cal. BC (UCD 0212). This is one of a number of sites running along the line of a possible palaeo-channel orientated in a N direction across the bog, including SMR OF010-458----, 2.14m to the N, which is 0.66m above this site and SMR OF010-469----, 1.17m to the S, which is 0.18m below it. Detached five-bay two-storey farmhouse, built c.1840, with flat-roofed extension to rear and gable-fronted porch to front. Now derelict. Set within its own grounds. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, terracotta ridge tiles and cast-iron rainwater goods, terracotta ridge cresting and finials to porch. Pebbledashed render to walls with smooth rendered plinth and quoins. Channelled render to porch. Replacement aluminium windows with tooled stone sills. Some timber casement windows to rear. Timber casement windows to porch with some stained glass. Timber and glazed replacement door. Wall to rear of house with ruined outbuildings set around yard showing traces of cobbling.
