Situated on top of a high rocky ledge with a steep drop to the NW with level ground elsewhere. Rectangular three storey high fortified house (ext. dims. 8.7m N-S; 11.8m E-W; wall T 1.5m) with rectangular gable ended chimney stacks and base batter. Attached to SE corner is a later 19th-century bawn wall with original bawn attached to N and S corners of the building. The building is orientated on a NE/SW axis. On the centre of the SE facing wall there is a two centred pointed doorway which gives access to the ground floor and spiral stairs which is located in the S angle from which all rooms are accessed via two centred doorways. Directly above the inside of the doorway there are two barrel vaulted chambers orientated NE/SW running along the SE wall at first floor and second floor levels. Evidence of wickerwork centring on the underside of this vault. The main chambers at first floor and second floor have wooden floors with attic above second floor level. The first floor has a simple fireplace on the S gable wall with tall rectangular chimney stack. The second floor has a similar fireplace and chimney stack on the N gable. Both these rooms are lit by several large rectangular windows set within deep round arched embrasures, possibly later insertions. Blocked garderobe at W angle of the building at first floor level. Curious oriel window protruding from the SW facing wall which is carried on three massive corbels at first floor level. Probable mid 17th-century fortified house. Holy well known locally as 'St. Bridget's Well' and depicted as 'Toberneeva' on all editions of the OS 6-inch maps. The well stands on the demesne lands of Castle Armstrong. The castle and later demesne house of Castle Armstrong stands 240m to SSW. Natural spring well (dims. 1.7m x 0.76m x 0.5m) inside square-shaped area enclosed by a stone wall with iron gate. The well which was originally stone lined has stone steps leading down to the water. A modern lintel over the well has the words 'St Bridget's Well' carved into its surface. Hazel and hawthorn tress now growing around the edge of the well with evidence of votive offerings. Described in 1977 as a 'sub-circular hollow approx. 1.5-2m deep with a small spring at the base. The northern face of the embankment or scarp above the well is roughly faced with dry stone walling. There is a small stream flowing southwards from the well. This stream is approx. 4m long and dissappears underground to emerge in the field drain further south. An ivy covered alder bush hangs over the well' (ASI file 1977). A dispersed spread of light brushwood in opposing drain faces (Wth 1.34m; D 0.31m). A single piece lying at an angle of 75° may represent a peg but there is no evidence for a distinct structure. The brushwood is two pieces deep towards the centre of the spread. The pieces are irregularly orientated but have been disturbed by the cutting of the drain. A number of pieces show evidence for woodworking. Wood species include willow and hazel. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1993. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument. The original survey description was compiled by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin). The site (L 446.29m; Wth 1.06m; D 0.2m) is orientated NE-SW and is composed of transverse and longitudinal planks and roundwoods. The structural composition of the site appears to vary along its length and is difficult to ascertain as a result of machine damage. Many pieces may have been at least partially displaced by milling. On the whole, however, the site appears to consist of longitudinal planks, often only one plank wide and deep, supported by sporadic transverse planks or roundwoods which may in turn rest upon longitudinal roundwood or plank runners to either side of the uppermost plank. Numerous pegs are also recorded as well as irregularly laid brushwood and woodchips and there is extensive evidence for woodworking with a metal tool. The site has been dendrochronologically to AD 594±9 (Q9249). Compiled by: Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College Dublin). Date of upload: 23 May 2011 - OF007-280: Road - class 1 togher, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF007-280----. The site (L 241.01m; Wth 1.29m; D 0.6m) is orientated NE-SW and consists of longitudinally laid planks, flanked either side by pegs, woodchips are irregularly scattered around the site. Further features include transverse and, less frequently, longitudinal roundwoods and heavy brushwood. Two to three planks are occasionally noted lying parallel to or overlapping each other. The pegs are composed of brushwood, light roundwoods and split timbers. The planks and woodchips are of oak. Toolmarks are noted on some of the brushwood and roundwoods. The site has been dendrochronologically to AD 596-597 (Q9251). The site crosses through poorly to moderately humified Sphagnum and Eriophorum peat with occasional ericaceous remains. SMR OF007-281---- and SMR OF007-282----, may relate to this site. Compiled by: Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College Dublin). The site (Wth 3.55m; D 0.16m) consists of a number of well-dispersed, radially split oak planks and roundwoods and a single peg orientated NE-SW. The width of the site may indicate that some of the elements were displaced in antiquity or that more than one site is present at this point. Wood species include oak, ash and hazel. A dendrochronological date of AD 601±9 years or later (Q10041) has been returned for one of the planks. This date is consistent with a dendrochronological date from SMR OF007-280---- and it is likely that the two are related. Compiled by: Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College Dublin). This site is located in industrial peatlands in Castletown Bog. It was first sighted during the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey in an E-facing drain face 0.39m below the field surface (Whitaker 2014). On excavation in 2016 (licence 15E0188) it was classified as a N-S oriented brushwood togher, and given a date of cal. 1424-1281 BC (UBA 26651). The togher was overlain and underlain by poorly decomposed Sphagnum peat. Two cuttings were opened at this location. At the first cutting (OF-CTN002, Photo 1), measuring 2x6m, the site was composed of regularly shaped brushwood, occasionally secured in place with brushwood pegs and with occasional transverse elements. The structure ranged in width from 0.68-1.45m, and appeared to terminate just within the S baulk. The elements were closely placed and sometimes laid up to four layers deep. Several worked ends were noted, mostly chisel-points with flat single facets. Many had bark intact and showed evidence of branch trimming. The second cutting (OF-CTN002b, Photo 2) measured 3x6m and was located 17m S of the first. Here, the site was composed of closely placed NNE-oriented brushwood elements, forming a surface of 0.78-1.2m in width and terminating 4m into the cutting. The elements were in moderate to good condition. Several toolmarked ends were noted, mostly showing chisel- and wedge-pointed ends.
