Two areas were opened up either side of the centre line. The southern comprised modern boundary ditches to the present road, fields and many furrows. Also a possible holding pool for water overflowing from the roadside ditch. Very poor remains of a post-medieval building c. 2m x 2m. Northern Area included a large bowl furnace and slag, charcoal spreads and nearby ditch along with a few possibly archaeological pits. This site was identified during testing along the route of the proposed N7 Castletown to Nenagh road improvement scheme. Excavation was carried out by Tori McMorran, for Valerie J. Keeley Ltd, in September 2007 under licence No. E3581. Two areas were stripped of topsoil. Area 1, the northern area, comprised a scatter of features indicative of metalworking. These include a bowl furnace containing a large quantity of iron slag, a linear trench containing a large volume of iron slag and charcoal, post-holes, stake-holes and a large spread of charcoal, stone and blackened clay. A narrow, shallow ditch ran north–south across the west end of the area. A small chert artefact, possibly a Mesolithic arrowhead, was discovered in an unstratified context. Area 2, the southern area, comprised the poorly preserved remains of a post-medieval/modern building, c. 2m by 2m in extent, as well as modern boundary ditches and furrows. The structure foundations comprised linear cuts filled with random rubble stone, clay and lime mortar. Central to the remains was a small hearth and a stone-lined and capped drain. To the south was the terminal of a wide, shallow east–west-aligned ditch. Scattered across these remains was a large volume of modern debris including glass, metal and ceramic fragments. A small number of possibly early post-medieval pottery sherds were removed from the ditch fill (Bennett 2010, 396-7). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien. Situated on N facing slope of rising ground in upland area. Unusual castle consisting of a Polygonal shaped area (diam. 35m) enclosed by a roughly coursed mortared wall of rubble masonry with musket opes visible and the wall foundations of two possible house sites in the S sector of the bawn. One of these buildings may have been the site of a castle (OF047-010002-). Externally the bawn is enclosed by a wide flat berm (Wth 12m) delimited by a wide deep fosse (max. Wth 6.7m; base Wth 2.5m) with causewayed stone line entrance (Wth 3.5m) to E. Modern road intersects outer defences at N. Possibly the site of a medieval bawn with tower house (now destroyed) built on top of an earlier earthwork. Site may have given its name to the townland Castleroan. Polygonal shaped bawn is similar to the bawn at Ballinlough Tower house (OF046-020----). Depicted as Caiseal Roan on the Down Survey (1655-6) (Loeber 1988 vol. 2, 26). Phase 2 excavations by John Tierney of Eachtra Archaeological Projects under licence No. E3909 along 17.1km (Contact 1) of the 35km N7 Castletown to Nenagh (Derrinsallagh to Ballintotty) national road scheme were commissioned by Laois County Council and the National Roads Authority. Contract 1 comprises the western half of the scheme and runs from Clashnevin to Castelroan, passing along the Tipperary North and Offaly county border regions. Six areas of archaeology were uncovered during Contract 1 trial-trench testing. Castleroan 1, Area 7.2, had originally been tested under licence E3375 (see No. 1703 below) in 2007. A potential house site with pits and post-holes was uncovered during testing. Excavations revealed five slot-trenches, two hearths, 60 post-holes, 55 pits and 68 stake-holes. The site measured 60m by 30m but the majority of the features were concentrated in an area measuring 20m by 20m. The numerous post- and stake-holes represented the footprint of at least two structures. Finds included sherds of Beaker pottery, a rubbing stone and worked chert and flint. Structure A was located in the north-western section of the site. It comprised two rings of posts: an inner ring of nine pits and post-holes and a slot-trench, and an outer ring of nine post-holes. The diameter of the inner ring was c. 5m and the diameter of the outer ring was c. 7m. The interior was characterised by a hearth, six pits, a post-hole and a slot-trench. Structure B (OF047-019002-) was located 5m to the south. The footprint of the structure was incomplete. It comprised two slot-trenches and five post-holes, with the slot-trenches probably marking an entrance, c. 1.4m wide. Five post-holes may have formed part of an internal ring of posts. There was an internal hearth, the base of which was cut by four stake-holes, probably the remains of hearth furniture (Bennett 2010, 399).
