Known as St Broghan's Road, parts of which were visible in the early 1940's(JRSAI 1945, 56-9). It consisted of brushwood, sand and gravel, was 0.3m wide and ran from close to Clonsast graveyard (OFO27-007----) westwards across the bog to Derriss house (Raheenakearan td.). It has been dated 780AD + 80 (Antiquity 1960, 14; PRIA 1985, 41-4). There is now little o rnothing to be seen of this togher. Marked on the most recent ed. OS 6-inch map close to St Broghan's stone but on the first ed. in a field fence to the W. It is not now to be seen at either location. According to Comerford (1883, 124-5) it was situated beside St Broghans stone (OF027-009002-) and was possibly of recent origin. Bearchán of Clonsast (Cluain Sosda) known locally as Broghan or Brachan was also known as Bearchán the ‘prophet’ and Bearchán na Buile ‘of the vision’ (Ó Riain 2011, 97). In 1189 Gerald of Wales recorded in Expugnatio Hibernica that Bearchán of Clonsast was one of the four prophets of Ireland (ibid.). During the 16th century the library of the earl of Kildare contained a book called Leabhar Bearcháin (na Cluana) which was believed to have come from the church at Clonsast and was ascribed to Bearchán. The feastday of St Bearchán fell on the 3rd/4th December (ibid.) Clonsast is reputedly the site of a monastery founded in the late 7th century by St Bearchán (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 377). Located on flat pasture land with good extensive views with Cairn (OF027-007----) 100m to SW, St. Broghan's Thorn (OF027-009001-) and St Broghan's stone (OF027-009002-) 110m to SE. On the OS 6-inch map the church is shown standing in the centre of an irregular shaped graveyard (OF027-008003-). The present remains consist of a badly ruined nave and chancel (max. dims. L c. 15m, nave Wth c. 5m, Wall T 0.95m) built with large blocks of greywacke and limestone. Only parts of the E wall foundation level, E end of N wall foundations, N section of dividing wall and W end of S wall remain to be seen. Probable early medieval church due to the cyclopean wall construction. No evidence of graveyard (OF027-008003-) or enclosure (OF027-008004-). Comerford (1883, 124) described the church as a divided nave and chancel church (ext. L. 45ft [13.7m]; Wall T 4ft [1.2m]; nave int. Wth 16ft [4.87m]; chancel int. Wth 10.5ft [3.2m]) with no architectural features or headstones visible. St Broghan's stone is a bullaun stone now broken with a shallow depression which according to Comerford (1883, 124) was formed from the impression of the saints head and is now used as a cure for headaches. Located on flat pasture land with good extensive views with Cairn (OF027-007----) to SW and St Broghan's stone (OF027-009002-) to SE. According to Gwynn and Hadcock (1988, 377) this is the site of an early monastic site founded by St. Bearchan in the 7th-century. Present remains consist of a poorly preserved nave and chancel church (OF027-008002-) built with large blocks of limestone and greywacke stone. Only parts of E wall at foundation level, E end of N wall foundations, N section of dividing wall and W end of S wall survive. No surface trace of graveyard, headstones or enclosure around church. Comerford (1883, 124) described the church as a divided nave and chancel church (ext. L. 45ft; W T 4ft; nave int. Wth 16ft; chancel int. Wth 10.5ft) with no architectural features or headstones visible. There are no pieces of cloth attached to the bush, which indicates that there has been no pattern day to this site for quite a while. Large limestone boulder now broken across the area of the basin (D 0.15m,diam. 0.25m) and situated in corner of field SW of church (OF027-008002-). Cairn (OF027-008003-) marked beside it does not now exist and maybe the same as one that is marked on the first edition of the OS 6-inch map to the W. Originally located to the SE of Clonsast Church (OF027-008002-) as marked on OS 6-inch map but now located to SW of the church where a destroyed cairn (OF027-009003-) was located. Large limestone boulder now broken across the area of the basin (D 0.15m; diam 0.25m) which according to Comerford (1883, 124-5) was formed by the impression of the saints head and which was resorted to for the purpose of the cure of a head-ache. Not visible at ground level. Marked on 1908 edition of OS 25-inch map as 'Carn' located 110m to the SSE of nearby church (OF027-00008002-), however on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map the carn is depicted at a different location. On this map the cairn is shown located 100m to the SSW of the church, where it is annotated as a 'Carn' standing in the SW corner of the field where the church and graveyard is located. Comerford (1883, 124-5) was not certain whether the carn marked a grave or was raised by pilgrims visiting the nearby church (OF027-008002-).
