Large subcircular structure (c. 3m diam.) on hillside with small stream flowing from it located to the N of Cannakill School at the foothills of Croghan Hill. Built with drystone walling. Obscured by dense growth of briars and is not used. Described by Reynolds (SMR 1977) as an abandoned well (diam. 3m) with remains of collapsed dry stone walling which is partially covered by a dense growth of briars. In 1934 the National Schools Survey of Holy Wells recorded that there ‘was an ash tree growing beside the well. The tree was very old and only a portion of the trunk remains standing now. Out of the trunk branches have grown and are making good progress. There is no pattern day or days of pilgrimage connected with this well. In years gone by people used visit this well to get a drink of the water and take some away. They used also rub the infected part with the water. This well was visited particularly for cure for teethaches. I saw the bark of this tree thick with pins. It would appear that when a person visited the well he or she put a pin into the tree or put in a number of pins’ (NFC 468, 138). Late medieval limestone head set into outbuilding of farmyard behind nineteenth century house that faces onto main road from Croghan to Rhode. Head appears to have chain mail and there are other medieval cut stone fragments incorporated into the fabric of the nineteenth century outhouse. This head along with the fragments may have come from nearby Croghan Castle (OF010-010003-), or from a second castle in the vicinity of this outhouse.. Beside the head there is datestone (OF010-057001-) with the initials T M (Thomas Moore) and the date 1681 carved onto its surface. This datestone may originally have come from Croghan Castle (OF010-010003-) or from a second castle in the vicinity of this outhouse. Finely carved head protruding from the external wall of an outhouse which is constructed from rubble of a medieval building of unknown origin. The head has bulging eyes, a stiff mouth, prominent eyebrows with broken chin. The top of the head is flat suggesting possible use as a corbel. To the right of the head on the wall there is a wall plaque with inscription which reads TM 1681. Burial ground consisting of two extended skeletons orentated on an E-W axis and five skulls belonging to similar burials were uncovered by Dominic Delany in 1997 under licence no. 97U0001 during archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping in advance of a proposed development at Croghan Demesne. Burial ground was located on S facing slope of rising ground in upland area with good views to the S, E and W, higher ground immediately to N. Nearby holy well known as Finnrenashark holy well (OF010-012----) located 34m to SE and second holy well (OF010-011----) located 167m to WSW. At least seven burials orientated on an E-W axis were uncovered at a depth of 0.3m below the surface of the ground. The disarticulated skeletal remains of other burials were also uncovered. Detached cruciform Roman Catholic church, built in 1827 and remodelled in 1960. Set within its own grounds. Comprising three-bay side elevation on to nave with side chapel to south west and flat-roofed porches to sides and rear. Pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge cresting, coping and terracotta finials to gables and cast-iron rainwater goods, carved limestone cross finial to east gable. Pebbledashed walls with smooth render to plinth and rendered quoins. Pointed-arched window openings with moulded rendered surrounds and painted sills. Stained glass windows to east with timber tracery to windows elsewhere, metal casement windows to side chapel and porches. Square-headed doorways with replacement timber doors and moulded rendered surrounds. Interior with stucco decoration to ceiling, carved timber reredos and altar with timber balcony. Stone grotto, cast-iron bell tower and grave markers to yard. Detached three-bay two-storey farmhouse, built c.1820, with porch added to front. Set within its own grounds. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, terracotta ridge tiles and timber eaves brackets, terracotta ridge cresting with finial and decorative timber bargeboards. Pebble dashed walls with smooth render quoins and ruled-and-lined render to porch. Timber sash windows with tooled stone sills. Timber casement windows with moulded render surrounds to porch.
