The site (Wth 1.8m; D 0.55m) is orientated E-W and composed of densely laid roundwoods and brushwood in opposing drain faces. The depth of material is considerable and it possibly represents several phases of construction or a number of structures. The wood is longitudinally laid (diam. max. 0.09m). Most of the brushwood is concentrated in the upper, SE side of the deposit where it is flanked by four large roundwoods, with two similar roundwoods 0.4m to the N. A single chisel point was recorded. The wood is in poor condition. The site is in Phragmites peat and is located 3.7m and 4.5m SE of SMR OF018-047---- and SMR OF018-048----, respectively, at the SE end of a small cluster of sites. Compiled by: Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College Dublin). A deposit of irregularly spaced light brushwood and roundwoods (L 2.8m; Wth 1.5m; D 0.32m) on the field surface. The wood is predominantly orientated N-S, with three perpendicular elements on the S side of the spread. A single peg is located on the E side of the structure. The site is situated in fen peat containing a small amount of Phragmites and fibrous roots. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1997. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument. The original survey description was compiled by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin). The site (L 4.5m min.; Wth 2.35m min.; D 0.30m) is orientated NW-SE on the field surface and consists of a number of probable hurdle panels. The upper surface of the site had been partially milled and fractured by machinery. The basal layer of the site consisted of 16 pegs (L 0.09-0.38m; diam. 0.01-0.03m), many of which were cut to a chisel shaped point. The short surviving lengths of these pegs suggest that may have been from an upper level of the site. Overlying these were 40-50 pieces of mixed brushwood and a roundwood, set 2-3 elements deep. These appeared to be roughly woven around the underlying pegs, in four bands orientated NNW-SSE, in a form of heavy wattling. Above this was a deposit of mixed brushwood (diam.1.4-3.5cm), with many of the elements fractured to short displaced lengths, probably as a result of use, subsequent vegetation growth and recent disturbance. These elements are lying at an angle of c. 45° angles and seem to be a mix of pegs and some displaced elements. The upper surface of the site consisted predominantly of transverse light brushwood, 1-2 rods deep. These overlay three longitudinal light brushwood elements that may have been sails. The depth of the structure may indicate separate phases of construction. Compiled by: Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College Dublin). Date of upload: 23 May 2011 - OF016-066: Road - class 3 togher, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF016-066----. The site (Wth 1.04m; D 0.19m) consists of a partial hurdle panel in the drain face. It consists of two sails with crudely interwoven light brushwood rods, secured by three pegs. Most of the rods run beneath the sails. The central area of the panel is less intact and appears to have been damaged in antiquity. Longitudinal elements on the NW side appear to delimit the site and may have been disturbed from the main body of the structure. The site is located in fen peat within a cluster of sites, 0.26m above SMR OF018-043----, 0.25m SE of SMR OF018-042----, 1.8m NW of SMR OF018-044---- and 4.8m SE of SMR OF018-045----. The site (L 1.1m min.; Wth 1.6m; D 0.2m) is orientated NE-SW and composed of compact heavy brushwood and light roundwoods in the drain face. The elements are longitudinally laid and are 3-4 pieces deep. The bulk of the material sits on a slight substructure of transverse, heavy brushwood. The main body of the site (Wth 1.1m) is secured on the NE side by two pegs. A number of toolmarks were recorded. Of the wood species identified, hazel was dominant, with alder, ash and willow also present. The site is in fen peat. The site has been radiocarbon dated to 381 BC-AD 22 (Beta-118033). It is located 0.24m above SMR OF018-043----, 0.25m and 3.3m NW of SMR OF018-041---- and SMR OF018-044----, respectively, and 4.5m and 3.3m SE of SMR OF018-046---- and SMR OF018-045----, respectively. The site (Wth 4.9m; D 0.75m) consists of a large assemblage of wood in opposing drain faces which incorporates several sites that could not be clearly distinguished. This material crosses three fen peat strata and distinct sites could not be determined within the two lower strata. The wood in the central horizon, however, is concentrated in a band (Wth 4.2m; D 0.4m) of mixed brushwood with some roundwoods. Three separate groupings are apparent in the upper peat stratum. One consists of two roundwoods, 0.37m apart, and some brushwood. The second (Wth 0.62m) is comprised of a piece of heavy brushwood with some light brushwood. The third group comprises an irregular spread of brushwood and a roundwood and is located 0.6m to the S of the other material. Woodworking was recorded from the material on the NW side of this drain face. Wood species include hazel, ash, birch, oak, alder and Pyrus/Malus. The complex is located c. 0.25m below SMR OF018-042---- and SMR OF018-041----, and SMR OF018-044---- is located below its SE end. SMR OF018-045---- and SMR OF018-046---- are located 3.5m and 4.7m to the NW, respectively. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1997. The site (Wth 2.9m; D 0.36m) consists of an assemblage of brushwood and a roundwood in the drain face which may represent three distinct constructions. On the SW side of the drain face, the first group is comprised of a roundwood with some light brushwood, lying within the same peat stratum as SMR OF018-042----, 0.75m to the NW. A second group is located 0.37m to the NE and consists of twelve irregular pieces of light brushwood. This is within the same peat stratum as the upper material of SMR OF018-043----. The third group lies 0.92m to the SW and consists of fourteen pieces of light brushwood which may represent a hurdle. This group sits in a similar peat stratum to the main concentration of SMR OF018-043----. Wood species are dominated by hazel, with alder and ash also recorded. The wood is in poor condition and is in fen peat. The site is located 1.2m and 4.7m NW of SMR OF018-045---- and SMR OF018-042----, respectively. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1997. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument. The site (dims. 6m min. E-W x 5m min. N-S; D 0.30m min.) consists of a degraded wooden platform on the field surface, which has been very disturbed by machinery making interpretation difficult. The site has no apparent orientation or structure. The basal deposits consist of an irregular arrangement of mixed brushwood, heavy roundwood and two timbers which was densest in the NE and central areas of the site. The upper surface, as it survived, was comprised of irregularly laid and fragmented mixed brushwood, roundwood and two timbers with no evident orientation, although many of the larger elements had an E-W orientation. These elements consisted of a tight, dense band of brushwood and roundwood with other displaced or dispersed material around this, and a number of apparent pegs occurring throughout the site. A range of woodworking with signatures was evident, cut with metal tool, and a number of lengths of finely dressed wood (92E148:43-44, 46, 48-49, 57) were also recovered. This site appears to post-date the site SMR OF018-048----, located 1.12m to the SW and is 3.70m NW of SMR OF018-038----. Compiled by: Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College Dublin). The site (L 1.7m min.; Wth 0.86m; D 0.26m) is orientated NW-SE. It consists of a hurdle panel which was partially uncovered within the S corner of the area opened to examine SMR OF018-047----. Four sails are apparent through which light brushwood rods are interwoven. The rods are denser in the central and E ends of the area exposed and the panel diminishes in the S corner of the cutting. The panel was held in place by a number of small pegs. The hurdle was laid on a substructure formed of heavy brushwood and light roundwoods, laid approximately E-W. Wood species include hazel, birch, alder, ash and oak. The site is situated in moderately humified Sphagnum peat containing Eriophorum and a small amount of ericaceous remains. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
