Possible large enclosure indicated by field fences on aerial photo (GSI, N540/541). Not visible at ground level. Townland name may indicate early ecclesiastical site. Trial trenching was carried out by Heather King under licence no. 94E038 in March 1994 at Killaderry, Daingean, Co. Offaly, prior to an application being made to Offaly County Council for permission to build a house on the site of a possible enclosure. The proposed site was within the south-west quadrant of the enclosure which is situated on rising ground above the 300' contour. The northern half of the enclosure had recently been ploughed while the southern half was in grass. A brief examination of the ploughed section revealed nothing but modern finds. Five trenches were opened in the south-west sector of the enclosure and revealed a uniform soil stratigraphy of brown soil and red earth above natural yellow gravelly clay. One of these trenches was opened adjacent to the road, which encircled the site on the south, to ascertain if there was any trace of a bank or ditch. No archaeological features or finds were recovered in the trial trenches and while it is possible that the site was enclosed by a bank with a possible external ditch no evidence for either were recovered in the south-west sector. Outline of rectangular shaped church (c. 16m x 7m) could be seen in 1977, now barely visible. Elaborate late 17th century gateway with stone heads on corbels (Kearney 1985 a, 5; 1985 b; ITA Survey 1942). At N end of square shaped graveyard enclosed by an earth and stone bank with 19th-century monumental gateway at S are the grass covered wall footings of a church (8m E-W; 4m N-S). The gateway has a round arch with pediment above carried on 13 corbels with carved faces. A panel depicting scenes of death and resurrection are visible on the centre of the pediment. Square shaped graveyard enclosed by a stone wall with monumental gateway of 19th century date along S side of graveyard wall. Wall footings of a medieval church (OF010-035002-) situated on top of high ground in the centre of the graveyard. The graveyard contains 18th and 19th century memorials. An archaeological assessment at Green Lane, Daingean, including testing under licence no. 04E1439 was required as part of the planning schedule for a single-house development adjacent to an enclosure (SMR 10:35). No archaeological deposits were uncovered as part of the testing; however, the boundary hedge may form part of a large enclosure surrounding the graveyard. - OF010-035004: Gateway, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF010-035004-. 19th century round-headed gateway flanked by V-shaped stone stile either side of gateway located at the W end of the S boundary of Killaderry graveyard (OF010-035003-) which is enclosed by an earth and stone bank, the grass covered wall footings of a medieval church site (OF010-035002-) are located in N quadrant. The gateway has a round arch with pediment above carried on 13 corbels with carved faces and a letter beneath each face. Above these corbels there is a carved stone plaque depicting symbols of death and resurrection with Latin inscription the Latin text ‘Domus mea est Domus oblivionis’ meaning ‘my house is the house of oblivion’. Beneath the skull and cross-bones there is a Latin inscription which reads 'Saltim vos amici mei reminisce mini mei - Saltim vos amici mei miseremini mei - Mortuis ex vivis anno 1815'. On the reverse side the plaque contains a trumpeting angel with a coffin beneath with Latin inscription roughly translated as 'What you are, I was: I am what you will be'. Random coursed sandstone gateway, built c.1815, comprising of round-headed arch with cut stone voussoirs, surmounted by limestone cornice with thirteen corbels decorated with carved faces and a carved plaque to both elevations. Flanked by random rubble sidewalls with modern stone steps. Walls may contain fabric from an earlier period. Wrought-iron gate to gateway. Various upright and recumbent grave markers to graveyard.
