The wood is in poor condition and sits in well-humified Sphagnum peat containing Eriophorum. Dendrochronologically dated to AD 1054±9 or later (Q10130). SMR OF010-476---- is 1m below this site. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 2001. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument. A band of light brushwood, roundwoods (diam. 0.07-0.1m) and twigs (Wth 1.5m; D 0.32m) orientated N-S in opposing drain faces. It is not possible to determine if all of the wood is archaeologically significant. The elements are slightly spaced apart with a small number of pieces lying at a greater distance from the main, central group. The wood is in poor condition and one piece has been identified as birch. The site sits in moderately humified fen peat. Radiocarbon dated to 3501-3099 cal. BC (UCD 0216). A dense collection of light roundwoods, mixed brushwood and a peg (L 10.1m min.; Wth 1.56m min.; D 0.07m) orientated N-S on the field surface. The wood is mostly transversely laid, with a small number of longitudinal pieces and some at irregular angles. The elements are up to two pieces deep. The peg is situated along the W edge of the site between two roundwoods with a further stake in the opposing drain face. The E edge of the site was not determined. The wood is in good condition with a small number of pieces worked to wedge and pencil points. Amongst the species identified were birch, hazel and Pomoideae.
