No church is depicted in the townland of ‘Killcourny’ which at the time was Protestant lands on the 1654 Down Survey map of Garrycastle Barony (NLI Ms. 716). No church is depicted in ‘Killoerny’ on Sir William Petty’s map of 1685. Recorded by the Ordnance Survey in 1838 as ‘the ruins of Killowny old Church’ (Herity 2008, 122). The church remains were described in 1942 as ‘The ruins consist of the remains of the side and end walls of a rough stone building. Length of original building about 33 ft. [10m], breadth of original building about 18 ft. [5.5m], height not possible to estimate’ (ITA Survey 1942). Present remains consist of the poorly preserved ruins of a rectangular church (13.1m E-W; 5.5m N-S; wall T 0.9m) with only portions of the N and S walls, along with half of the E gable surviving above ground with no evidence of the W wall of the church. The N wall of the church has been partially rebuilt and repointed in places but is the best preserved where it stands c. 1.2m high. In the 19th century this wall of the church formed part of the N wall of the graveyard. Only the lower three courses of the central section of the S wall (H 0.6m) of the church remains upstanding with footings of the foundations of the E end of the S wall visible along with grass covered footings of the foundation of the levelled E wall of the church. At E end of church ruins a modern altar covered by a stone shelter has been constructed in recent times on top of the wall footings of the E wall of the church. There are no surface remains visible of the W end of the S wall or of the W wall of the church. N wall of church was used as part of N wall of graveyard (OF022-012002-) which contains 18th/19th-century headstones. In recent times the graveyard has been extended to the N and E of the older smaller graveyard. Irregular earthworks outside W wall of graveyard may be associated with church. A lugged mortar has been built up against the E face of the S wall of the old graveyard which has now been extended to the E. Traces of possible ecclesiastical enclosure (OF022-012005-) in fields to N, NE and SW of church. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Poorly preserved ruins of a rectangular church (OF022-012001-) stand in N quadrant of graveyard. The N wall of the church formed part of the N wall of the graveyard which was built in the 19th century. The graveyard has been extended to the N and E in recent times. A lugged mortar has been built up against the E face of the S wall of the old graveyard boundary. Graveyard contains 18th/19th-century headstones and is entered from through a gateway located in S wall. Remains of a coffin stand and stile are incorprorated into the graveyard wall to the W of this gateway. Large car park has been built in field to S of graveyard. Irregular earthworks outside W wall of graveyard may be associated with church. Traces of possible ecclesiastical enclosure (OF022-012005-) in fields to N, NE and SW of graveyard. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Curving arc of townland boundary c. 100m to N and NE of church (OF022-012001-) and graveyard (OF022-012002-) along with curving arc of field boundaries to SW of graveyard may indicate possible remains of an ecclesiastical enclosure of Early Christian date (Fitzpatrick 1998, 121). The partial remains of an enclosing bank which may have formed part of an inner enclosure visible on aerial photographs (GSI June 1973 N. 521/520) was levelled in the early 1990s. This enclosing bank was located in the field to the E of Killowney church (OF022-012001-) and graveyard (OF022-012002-) and was levelled by a machine driver when the graveyard was being extended c. 1990 (SMR file 1997). The circular curving field banks indicated on the current edition of the OS 6-inch maps 150m to the SSW of the church (OF022-012001-) may be the remains of the original ecclesiastical enclosure (int. diam. c. 290m) associated with an Early Christian monastery at Killowney. This field boundary no longer survives but a portion of an upstanding curving field boundary located 100m to the N of the church (OF022-012001-) may be the only surviving surface remains of the possible ecclesiastical enclosure. This upstanding section of the ecclesiastical enclosure acts as the townland boundary between Killowney Beg and Killowney More. The curving shape of the 19th century graveyard wall may suggest the presence of an inner enclosure with the graveyard wall following the curve of the earlier inner enclosure. See attached word document for annotated sketch plan showing circuit of possible ecclesiastical enclosure. Situated on wet grassland that has been reclaimed and coverted into a car park with modern graveyard extension immediately to the S and SE of a church (OF022-012001-) and graveyard (OF022-012004-). The remains of a fulacht fia were levelled in the early 1990s by a machine driver when the graveyard (OF022-012002-) was being extended c. 1990 (SMR file 1997). The fulacht fia was located in the field 50m to the SE of the graveyard in the area where the present car park is located. A second fulacht fia (OF022-012007-) now covered over by landscaping works is located c.50m to the E. In poorly drained grassland, 110m south of a church (OF022-012001-) and graveyard (OF022-012004-), with levelled fulacht fia (OF022-012006-) c. 50m to W. A well preserved horseshoe-shaped mound (7.1m NW-SE; 9.3m NE-SE; H 0.3m) of burnt material, with the opening (2m NE-SW; 2.7m NW-SE) facing SE. A rescue excavation was carried out on the site of this fulacht fiadh in 2013 by David Sweetman under license No. 13E0119, when the field where the site was located was used as a landfill site for dumping of soil associated with groundworks on the adjacent public road carried out by Offaly Co. Co. The mound of burnt stone was relocated underneath the dumped soil. The site was recorded and photographed by the excavator and was then covered over with protective material but was not fully excavated. No evidence of any trough was found in association with the burnt stone material.
