Situated on W face of hill in upland area. The E half of this site is totally destroyed by a modern laneway. All that remains is the W half of a circular area (diam 35m approx.) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.5m) with no evidence of an outer fosse or entrance feature. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011 - OF039-031001: Ringfort - rath, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF039-031001-. Situated on the E facing slope of a high ridge running N-S in undulating countryside. Sub-circular area (diam 40m) enclosed by an earthen bank with evidence of stone revetment in its construction (Wth 2m; ext. H 3m; int. H 0.5m) with external fosse (Wth 2.5m; ext. D 1m) which is badly damaged and causewayed entrance gap (Wth 2.5m) at SW. There is evidence of a stone building on the NW side of the enclosing bank which appears to be the wall footings of a possible tower house or an unclassifed castle (OF039-031002-) of medieval date. Running around the top of the earthen bank are the possible foundations of a stone wall with possible corner tower at SE sector. Possibly a ringfort which has been fortified in the medieval period. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011 - OF039-031002: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF039-031002-. Located in N sector of ringfort on E facing slope of high ground in upland area with Tower house (OF039-047----) to SE. Ringfort (OF039-031----) which appears to have been fortified in the medieval period. This site has been classed as a motte and bailey however its location, low size of mound and lack of defensive qualities all argue against such a classification. The mound which is referred to as a motte is level with the height of the enclosing bank and was probably constructed to form a foundation for this stone building which measures approx. 13m E-W by 10m N-S with wall thickness of 1.1m. There is evidence of a slight base batter on the N end of the W wall. This building was originally rectangular in shape. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011 Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands in the townland of Knock. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: About 1 in 10 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
