The medieval ruins of the church of Kilbride [Cill Bhríde], known locally as ‘St. Bridget’s Abbey’ forms the N boundary of Kilbride graveyard (OF008-009003-) with the site of a possible convent/nunnery (OF008-009002-) 60m to S (OSL 1840, 134) and a second church site (OF008-009004-) also 60m to S. According to local tradition this parish was founded by St. Brigid before she founded Kildare (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0807, Page 203; Cogan 1867, 496). The ruins of two ecclesiastical buildings are shown at this location in the townland of ‘Kilbride & Killocollni/Killecolline’ on the 1654-57 Down Survey map of Kilcoursey Barony (NLI MS 716). The terrier of the Down Survey map of Kilbride parish recorded that in Kilbride there were ‘the Ruines of two Churches’ which stood on lands belonging to Hubert Fox in 1641 (ibid.). In the 19th century the stones from both ecclesiastical buildings were used to construct the Sisters of Mercy Convent (Saint Brigid’s, Kilcoursey) located 1km to the S. This event was described as following; ‘There are still some remains of an old monastery (OF008-009002-) and chapel; and the fragments of a church (OF008-009001-) in the cemetery, quite contiguous, measure fifty-two [15.85m] in length by twenty-four [7.3m]. Some years back, with the permission of the church-warden of that day, many of the stones of convent and church were carried away to build a house, and, by the providence of God, this house has been converted into a convent the Sisters of Mercy are living there to-day’ (Cogan 1867, 496). The present remains consist of a single-cell rectangular church (ext. dims. 8m N-S; 12.3m E-W, wall T c. 0.95m) with two storey vaulted priests residence inserted into W end of church. The walls W, N and E walls (H 2-2.5m) survive intact and are built of uncoursed rubble. Only the W end of the S wall (L 4m) survives. A barrel vaulted chamber (int. dims. 5.5m N-S; 2m E-W) at the W end of the church is a later insertion with evidence of a blocked up doorway at the W end of N wall which gave access to a chamber on N side of church. Only the lower walls of this chamber survive on the W end of the N wall of the church. A flat headed slit ope window located off centre to E is visible in S wall of barrel vaulted chamber. This off-centre window predates the insertion of the vaulted chamber and is contemporaneous with the first phase of the church building. A doorway now missing its cut stone surround at N end of the E wall of the barrel-vaulted chamber gives access to the church. At first floor level there is a broken out single light cusped ogee headed window set into a wide segmental-arched embrasure with a stone seat on either side. To the S of this window embrasure are the remains of a flat-headed aumbry or wall cupboard. The lower section of the E window embrasure is visible in the E gable. No architectural features visible in N wall of church, while the majority of the S wall no longer survives. Church described in 1942 as following; ‘The 'abbey' lies at N end of graveyard on a level extension without graves. Its side alone suggests that it is not a very ancient building, and it looks as fitted into a pre-existing grave yard. It has no architectural features. The walls are much clad with ivy; the N and W walls are fairly well preserved, the E wall to about 8’ [2.4m] high, with traces of a fairly wide E. window. S wall gone. The W end is occupied by a large barrel-vault which extends the whole width of church and is incorporated in W wall (how I cannot see owing to ivy); it seems to have been built separate from the N and S walls of church, were probably demolished for its erection. There a broken door on E with horizontal masonry arch, and a slit window on S; in both opes are ashlar blocks used irregularly and probably taken from an older building. Int[ernal] dimensions of church 19’ [5.8m] x 37’ 6” [11.43m] (incl. 11’ [3.35m] width of barrel-vault and its E wall’ (Oliver Davies, ITA Survey 1942). The medieval ruins of the church (OF008-009001-) of Kilbride [Cill Bhríde], known locally as ‘St. Bridget’s Abbey’ forms the N boundary of Kilbride graveyard (OF008-009003-) with the site of a possible convent or church standing along W boundary of graveyard 60m S of the parish church ruins (OSL 1840, 134). Wall footings of a second medieval church (OF008-009004-) formed N boundary of earlier graveyard to the S of St. Bridget's abbey. Cogan (1867, 496) recorded that a 'church and convent were founded here by St. Bridget, and there is a tradition amongst the people that this was the first church erected by her after her religious profession, on the hill of Usny [Uisneach]'. The ruins of two ecclesiastical buildings are shown at this location in the townland of ‘Kilbride & Killocollni/Killecolline’ on the 1654-57 Down Survey map of Kilcoursey Barony (NLI MS 716). On the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map the possible convent is depicted as a narrow rectangular building aligned N-S standing on the W boundary of the graveyard. A second building possibly a medieval church (OF008-009004-) located to the NE of this building is visible in the graveyard. Only the lower wall footings of this ecclesiastical building are visible in the centre of the graveyard. The long axis of the possible convent building is orientated along a N-S axis with a post-1700 stone walled burial place or mortuary house belonging to the Holmes family of Greenville at S end of building annotated 'Convent' on the OS 6-inch map. Possible convent site described in 1942 as following; ‘The graveyard (OF008-009003-) is a long strip of which the central part seems the oldest and is the most raised. The ‘convent’ consists of several poorly built walls up to 5’ [1.5m] high. I can make nothing of them, and they have no features; they suggest a series of grave enclosures rather than a monastic building’ (Oliver Davies ITA Survey). According to local tradition this parish was founded by St. Brigid before she founded Kildare (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0807, Page 203; Cogan 1867, 496). The graveyard was described in 1938 as following 'The graveyard (about 15 perches [75m] x 8 perches [40m] roughly triangular) is certainly very ancient. There is no gateway into it. There are two stiles (to cross the wall) and between them a large flat stone which was set there to take the coffin while the bearers climbed the stiles. At the farthest corner from the road towards the east there is an old ruin [OF008-009001-- which local tradition states to be the authentic ruin of St. Brigid's church (or kitchen). It is about 15 feet [5m] by 9 feet [3m] inside and the inside of the roof is rounded. The outside is so much covered with ivy that it is impossible to say what it is like. The graveyard is still used. One local family claims to have 18 generations buried there. A great improvement has been made in the keeping of this graveyard, cutting nettles etc., since my first visit to it in 1927. Legend say that when St. Brigid asked for land for her convent she was told she could have what her cloak would cover, and she got Kilbride' (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0807, Page 203). Kilbride graveyard was described in 1942 as following; ‘The graveyard is a long strip of which the central part seems the oldest and is the most raised. The ‘convent’ (OF008-009002-) consists of several poorly built walls up to 5’ [1.5m] high. I can make nothing of them, and they have no features; they suggest a series of grave enclosures rather than a monastic building. The old church must have been near them on the highest part of the mound; there are no remains save for one door-jamb’ (Oliver Davies ITA Survey). Originally the graveyard consisted of a roughly rectangular-shaped area (approx. dims. 36m N-S x 22m E-W) enclosed by a post-medieval stone wall the low footings and external facing of which are still visible. During the 19th century the graveyard was widened by a short distance to the E and W with a large area extended to the N and S which was then enclosed by a stone to created a diamond shaped graveyard (approx. dims. 140m N-S; 37m E-W). The earlier graveyard is visible today as a the highest part of the burial ground located in the centre with traces of the earlier boundary wall best visible at S. The extension of the graveyard to the N meant that the medieval church ruins (OF008-009001-) now formed the N boundary of the new graveyard. Wall footings of a possible convent (OF008-009002-) now formed the W boundary of the graveyard. Stone stile and double coffin stand visible in S section of boundary wall. Wall footings of possible medieval church (OF008-009004-) formed N boundary of smaller earlier graveyard. The central portion of the graveyard has a concentration of memorials dating from the post-1700 period onwards with later memorials in the extended burial ground on all sides. Only the lower wall footings of this ecclesiastical building are visible in the graveyard. These walls are poorly constructed and survive approx. 0.35m high and have many gravestones inserted in its raised interior. The outline of this rectangular building orientated on an E-W axis measures 17.3m E-W by 8.3m N-S, with a wall thickness of 0.85m. These measurements would indicate a late medieval date of a possible church and probably represents one of the two churches depicted on the Down Survey maps. Possible church site described in 1942 as following; ‘The graveyard (OF008-009003-) is a long strip of which the central part seems the oldest and is the most raised. Church remains described in 1977 as 'In the centre of the graveyard and partly obscured by burials is the outline of a rectangular mortared stone building. Only the wall footings survive and in places has disappeared. SW of this is a small rectangular building approx. 2m high. This has a small rectangular annexe. There are no cut stones visible. The significance of this small structure is not apparent' (ASI file 1977).
