Featureless late medieval parish church (ext. dims. c. 9m E-W, c. 26m N-S) built with limestone rubble. Small double bell cote on W gable, E window destroyed and built up. Possibly part of the Franciscan friary that was later converted into a parish church. Franciscan Friary founded 1325 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 255). The remains of the Franciscan friary of Monasteroris, also known as Castro Petre de Mortoto and Totmoy (Tuath muighe). The record of its founding describes how the minister provincial and Friars Minor in Ireland accepted de Bermingham's invitation to build a chapel and dwellings in his town of 'Totemoy' in the diocese of Kildare (CPR, vol. 2, 1305-42, 245; Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1988, 107-8). The 1550 survey of Offaly recorded that there were two castles at Monasteroris, 'one newlie builded and thother all runyose', in addition to the ruined walls of the friary 'burnyd and rasid' and a mill and orchard (Curtis 1929, 326, Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 108-9). Located on flat ground with good extensive views. In NE corner of graveyard (OF011-009002-), ruins of long rectangular church (int. dims 22m E-W; 7.4m N-S; wall T 1m) built with roughly coursed limestone rubble. The church interior has been altered by the insertion of three crypts of 19th-century date and 19th-century railing has been inserted into the E gable destroying the original window the N splay of which is still visible. A crypt has also been added externally to the N side of the W gable. The church is a multiperiod structure with the earliest period belonging to the late 13th/early 14th-century which is evidenced by a narrow single light window at the E end of the S wall with jambs displaying diagonal stone tooling. This window has been reset into the S wall in order to make the window smaller with evidence of an earlier blocked up splay to the W of surviving splay. The window is set inside a wide round arched embrasure. Originally there were four such embrasures on the N and S walls. The window at the E end of the N wall is the only other window to survive the rest were blocked up when the crypts were inserted into the church after it was abandoned in 1778. According to Comerford (1883, 140) there was a double bellcote on top of the W gable of which a single round arched bellcote survives today. No evidence of an original door was found. Two blocked doors on the W gable are probably 19th-century constructions contemporary with the crypts. Above these two doors on the W gable are two blocked windows probably late medieval in date. Punch dressed stone located on the interior of the W wall off centre to the N probably incorporated into the gable during the rebuilding phase in the 16th-century when the church was granted to Nicholas Herbert. Several pieces of a traceried window have been found in the graveyard along with two limestone punch dressed window jambs with bar holes of late medieval date. A single piece of Dundry stone belonging to a window was found during recent graveyard clean up. The church is probably part of the original Franciscan Abbey founded in 1325 which was altered in the late medieval period and again in the 19th-century. The buildings and earthworks to the NE of the church also belong to this 14th-century foundation. The graveyard contains some fine examples of late 17th-century headstones (OF011-009003/004/005-). (Comerford 1883, 140; O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 29-30) Possible remains of the deserted medieval settlement of 'Totemoy' (OF011-009006-) may be located in the field immediately to the W of the church and graveyard. Remains of a possible castle that may be the original Castro Petre (Peter's Castle) (OF011-011----) is located in the field to the NE of the church. The church interior has been altered by the insertion of three crypts of 19th-century date and 19th-century railing has been inserted into the E gable destroying the original window the N splay of which is still visible. A crypt has also been added externally to the N side of the W gable. Several pieces of a traceried window have been found in the graveyard along with two limestone punch dressed window jambs with bar holes of late medieval date. A single piece of Dundry stone belonging to a window was found during recent graveyard clean up. The church is probably part of the original Franciscan Abbey founded in 1325 which was altered in the late medieval period and again in the 19th-century. The buildings and earthworks to the NE of the church also belong to this 14th-century foundation. The graveyard contains some fine examples of late 17th-century headstones (OF011-009003/004/005-). Extensive earthworks survive which possibly are the remains of a deserted medieval village associated with the Franciscan Friary (OF011-009----) and de Bermingham Anglo-Norman (OF011-011----). May be the remains of the town of Tethmoy or Totmoy that is mentioned in the 1550 Survey and other documentary sources for the area. The remains of the Franciscan friary of Monasteroris, also known as Castro Petre de Mortoto and Totmoy (Tuath muighe). The record of its founding describes how the minister provincial and Friars Minor in Ireland accepted de Bermingham's invitation to build a chapel and dwellings in his town of 'Totemoy' in the diocese of Kildare (CPR, vol. 2, 1305-42, 245; Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1988, 107-8). Now situated on a pillar at the back of R.C. church in Edenderry but said to have come from Monasteroris (OF011-009007-), medieval octagonal shaped font (max W. 0.4m,H. 0.35m) with circular basin (D. 0.25m, diam 0.33m). Diagonal tooling on its outer faces indicating a 12th or 13th century date. Inscription on one face of the font reads 'MF O S F 1290', which is probably a later addition.

This site is located on flat land with good views in all directions. There is a river located to the north of this site, this river runs into the river Boyne. Franciscan Friary founded 1325 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 255) and marked on the OS 6-inch map as a 'Monastery (in Ruins) which is situated just SE of the possible motte (OF011-010001-) and consisting of a pile of collapsed masonry with portions of walls standing at N and NE. This monastic complex was said to have been founded by John De Bermingham in 1325 for the Franciscan friars, the church (OF011-009----) located in the graveyard may be the remains of the Friary. The remains of the Franciscan friary of Monasteroris, also known as Castro Petre de Mortoto and Totmoy (Tuath muighe). The record of its founding describes how the minister provincial and Friars Minor in Ireland accepted De Bermingham's invitation to build a chapel and dwellings in his town of 'Totemoy' in the diocese of Kildare (Cal. papal letters, 1305-42, 245; Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1988, 107-8). It is possible that the remains that are indicated on the 6-inch map as a 'Monastery' were mistakenly identified and may be associated with a castle possibly the Castro Petre (Peter's Castle) that was named after the De Bermingham's who established an Anglo-Norman manor here in the thirteenth century. Later in the fourteenth century the De Bermingham's invited the Franciscan Friars to their land and the church (OF011-009----) to the S of the castle may be the remains of their Friary. The present remains of the castle appear to consist of low grass covered walls forming a possible bawn are and the upstanding remains of two buildings one of which seems to be a gatehouse of a castle. The earthworks comprise of grass covered walls which form various buildings and what appears to be the enclosing wall around the N section of the site. These walls have an average wall thickness of 4m. This perimeter wall runs in an E- W direction for a distance of 62m, there is a gap in the W end of this ridge which is 1m wide, this may have been an entrance feature. Coming off the E end of this ridge at a right angle in a Southerly direction is another wall which is approx. 40m in length and on avg. has an int. height of 0.5m and an ext. height of 1m. Attached to the W side of this wall there is what appears to be the foundations of a rectangular shaped building with internal dimensions of 4.2m by 20m and ext. dimensions of 22m by 8m. Its enclosing walls survive to a height of 0.5m. There is a gap on the W end of the building which measures 2m wide. Approx. 5m to the W of this building there are the remains of a square building with internal dimensions of 4m by 7.5m. Again on the W side of this building there is a gap which measures 1.8m wide this may be an original entrance feature. To the S of the earthworks are the remains of two buildings which are in a ruinous state. Their condition makes it difficult to interpret their function. The most Southerly building appears to be a gatehouse with a moat running around the E side of the site. The walls of this rectangular gatehouse are extant to the first floor level only and are constructed of undressed stones of varying size held together with mortar. The internal dimensions of this gatehouse are 7.6m by 5m. Originally it is possible that the gatehouse and the range of buildings to the N of the gatehouse may have been part of an Anglo-Norman manor and may have then been converted into a monastic complex associated with the Franciscan Friars and later converted into a fortified stronghold of the O'Conors. The gatehouse may have been one of the two castles mentioned in the 1550 Survey of Monasteroris. This survey recorded that there were two castles at Monasteroris, 'one newlie builded and thother all runyose', in addition to the ruined walls of the friary 'burnyd and rasid' and a mill and orchard (Curtis 1929, 326, Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 108-9). West wall of the gatehouse: This wall is extant to first floor level only, most of its quoin have been robbed except on the Southern end of the wall where they are apparent from 2m above ground level. The base batter stones have also been robbed except on the Southern side where they exist to ground level. The only feature on this wall is a large opening which measures 1.9m wide and approx. 3m high. This gap has been blocked up from ground level for a height of 1.6m. there are no dressed stones apparent on the exterior of the wall. The interior face of this window shows that the window is recessed into the wall for a distance of approx. 0.5m while the arch of the window is the full thickness of the wall which is 2m. South wall of the gatehouse: This wall is covered in ivy and the eastern side is badly destroyed. The quoin stones have been robbed on both sides to a height of approx. 4m from ground level. There is evidence of a slight base batter on this wall. There is an entrance feature located off centre to the East on this wall, the base of this entrance has been filled up for a height of 1m. The gateway entrance comprises of a pointed archway which is set 0.82m in from the face of the wall, there are two nib holes located on the Western side under the arch. Just inside the entrance on the East wall there is a small bar slot which measures 0.21m by 0.28m by 0.25m deep. There is a corresponding bar slot on the opposite side which measures 3m long. A drawbridge across the moat in front of the gatehouse gave access to the complex of buildings behind this moat. This millrace runs up to the Old Mill to the E of the castle complex. East wall of the gatehouse: This wall is in a very poor condition and is covered in grass and is partially destroyed. However built into the thickness of this wall was a garderobe shute which 1m by 1.4m, this chute ran up through the thickness of the wall. Adjoined to this Eastern wall is a small rectangular chamber which measures 2m by 4m internally with the thickness of the wall being approx 2m. The orientations and size of the site would not indicate an ecclesiastical site, it may well be a tower house. (O'Flanagan 1933, 87). In pasture, on slight rise in undulating countryside. Site now appears as an enclosure (int. diam. 33m N-S) delimited by a much degraded bank with possible traces of a fosse outside it. No entrance way visible. Workshop recently built into S wide of site destroying part of bank and fosse. Modern house extension intersects site at SE. The development site (NGR 26160/23300) is located on the north-west side of Edenderry town in Monasteroris townland. The proposed development (Edenderry Business Park) was for 21 single-storey light industrial/warehouse units with two-storey office areas in three blocks on a greenfield site. A badly denuded ringfort (OF012–002----) is located on the high ground in the southern field along the road frontage. Due to the close proximity of the ringfort, the local authority requested further information based upon excavated test-trenches. A test excavation was undertaken by Eoin Sullivan of Gort Archaeology unde licence No. 07E0383 between 2 and 9 May 2007. The site was assessed on the basis of 27 mechanically excavated trenches systematically located throughout the site of the proposed development. Two of the test-trenches revealed features, one of which was a modern land drain while the other was a small pit contained within the confines of the trench. Due to the presence of the ringfort and the pit it was recommended that all groundworks associated with the development be monitored. The proposed development received full planning permission and the first phase of construction works commenced in November 2007. Between November and December groundworks associated with the site access road, roundabouts, site compound and associated drainage works and attenuation tank were monitored. No features or soils of archaeological significance were encountered on the site. Further groundworks are planned to commence in 2008 (Bennett 2011, 299). The development site is located on the north-west side of Edenderry town in Monasteroris townland. The site was subject to pre-development test excavation (see above) and subsequent monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of the site access road, associated drainage works and attenuation tank. It is near a ringfort, OF012–002----. The groundworks associated with the first phase of construction of the industrial units took place between 21 and 30 May 2008. Monitoring was carried out as an extension to the excavation licence. The monitoring of Blocks 6 and 7 resulted in the identification of three small isolated features within both the footprint and the vicinity of the perimeter of Block 7. Two of the features appeared to be modern and related to modern/natural burning in the field. The third feature was an irregularly shaped pit and represented in situ burning in the field and was of archaeological significance. The pit was sectioned and measured 0.69m (north–south) by 0.6m. The single fill of the pit consisted of blackened clay containing occasional pieces of charcoal overlying fire-reddened subsoil. No artefacts were identified in the fill or were encountered in the removal of topsoil and there was a general lack of the typical modern wares associated with agricultural fields (Bennett 2011, 299-300). Medieval mill that is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of Monasteroris and Ballynakill (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 108) may have been located in the vicinity of Mill Mount House. A disused mill-race runs past Mill Mount House and acts as a defensive moat in front of the gatehouse into Monasteroris castle (OF011-011----). The 1550 survey of Offaly recorded that there were two castles at Monasteroris, 'one newlie builded and thother all runyose', in addition to the ruined walls of the friary 'burnyd and rasid' and a mill and orchard (Curtis 1929, 326, Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 108-9). In 1574 a second land grant to Nicholas Harberte included the old town of Monasteroris with its dissolved friary, two castles and 20 cottages which was then renamed Harbartiston ( Fiants, vol. 2, no. 485; Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1988, 109).
