- OF001-005: Enclosure, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF001-005----. This site has been levelled. According to local information the site formerly comprised a circular area enclosed by a low bank which was overgrown with bushes. The field in which it was situated had just been ploughed when last visited. Pre-development test-trenching was carried out by Eoin Sullivan under licence no. 05E1151 at the site of the proposed Moyally O2 telecommunications tower, site compound and associated access road. The site is located to the south-east of Moate village. An enclosure (SMR 1:5) is located c. 100m to the east of the proposed development. The site was assessed on the basis of four mechanically excavated test-trenches, on 7 October 2005. No soils or features of archaeological significance were encountered during the excavation. - OF001-013: House - Bronze Age, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2COF001-013----. Testing was carried out by Fintan Walsh of Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd under licence No. E2677 as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway. The site was identified during testing undertaken by the writer in August 2005 (A019/029). The site was excavated between November 2005 and February 2006. An excavation area measuring 40m north–south by 15m was opened. The prehistoric settlement site at Tober, Co. Offaly, was located in a low-lying sheltered spot, immediately adjacent to a country road and surrounded by undulating farmland approximately 3.5km south-east of Moate. Central to the archaeological remains was a distinctive 7m-diameter ring of large well-defined post-holes. Evidence from the packing arrangement and post-pipe diameters within the post-holes suggests that they would have contained posts of c. 0.2m thick. An outer 10m-diameter ring of smaller post-holes enclosed these. In addition to this there was an arrangement of two larger post-holes at the south-east and external to the outer circle of posts. Central to both rings of post-holes was a large hearth (c. 3m diameter) with associated stake-holes. A number of small refuse pits were also located within the main ring of post-holes. The arrangement of these archaeological features can best be interpreted as a circular building with internal roof supports. The roof supports are defined by the inner ring of large post-holes, with the wall defined by the outer ring of smaller post-holes. It is likely that this wall would have been in the form of wattle and daub with the roof thatched. The large posts at the south-east of the building may have defined a porch entrance. The internal hearth was defined by distinctive layers of burnt clay and charcoal with associated stake-holes which may have been the basis for a series of spits over the fire. There was also a suggestion of internal divisions within the building in the form of lines of stake-holes. There was an enclosing element to the site that was defined by a series of stake-holes to the north and south of the building. This suggests the presence of a surrounding wattle fence that would have delimited the immediate area of the settlement. The fence also enclosed a number of isolated pits and two ‘four-poster’ structures that were defined by a roughly square arrangement of large post-holes to the south of the main building. A small assemblage of Late Bronze Age pottery sherds was recovered from a structural post-hole of the circular building, and a sandstone spindle-whorl was found in an associated pit (Bennett 2010, 405-06). A Bronze Age house with associated settlement features was excavated under licence No. E2677 in the townland of Tober, by Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd (I.A.C.) as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 phase 2: Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway scheme. The excavation took place on the W edge of a thin way-leave of a side road connected to the motorway between 7 December 2005 and 2 February 2006. The site was first identified in 2005 by I.A.C. Ltd when archaeological testing was undertaken in this field. The site is located 1.1km N of the village of Tober on gently undulating land with good views in all directions. Ballynahinch crannog (OF001-001----) is located 1.6km to the NNE. The site at Tober 1 consisted of a house (diam. c. 10m) defined by two concentric rings of posts with associated ancillary structures, all of which was enclosed by a fence. The inner circle (diam. 7m) consisted of large postholes (diam. 0.65m x D 0.7m) representing the remains of internal roof support oak posts (avg. diam. 0.15m). Radiocarbon dates obtained from this inner ring of postholes ranged from 1112-918 B. C., 1006-845 B. C. & 840-780 B.C.. The outer ring (diam. c. 10m) of small shallow postholes (D 0.1-0.2m) supported an external wall of posts and wattle which was located 1.5m outside the inner ring. Dates obtained from these postholes ranged from 1006-845 B.C. and 972-837 B.C.. A possible entrance porch (Wth c. 1.2m) was identified on the SE side of the house. In the centre of the house were the remains of a central post which was c. 3.5m equidistant from the postholes supporting the roof structure. This central post was c. 5m equidistant from the outer circle of postholes which supported the external wall of the house. This central post was located beside the large central hearth (Wth c. 2m) of the house which was defined by in situ burning and charcoal deposits spread over a large area. Dates obtained from this hearth ranged from 1123-938B.C. and 1120-910 B.C. The remains of possible partition walls were identified in the N half of the interior of the house. A distinctive pit with fire-reddened charcoal-rich fills to the S of the hearth may be the remains of a roasting/cooking pit (oven). A second large circular pit to the W of the hearth may have been used as a cooking/boiling pit and contained a large deposit of stone some of which had been subjected to heat. Two lobes on the edge of the pit may have supported a stick which extended across the pit, perhaps for suspending objects (food for cooking?) it the pit was filled with boiling water. To the N of the house was uncovered a curving line of postholes (1006-832 B.C.) which may be the remains of a stake and wattle fence (OF002-053002-) enclosing the Bronze Age house. This feature was not fully excavated as part of the enclosing feature ran into the unexcavated area to the W of the house. To the S of the house a series of postholes were excavated and identified as structure D which appears to have been the remains of straight fence orientated in a WNW-ESE alignment. Other postholes identified to the S of the house consisted of two four-post structures (dims. 2.5m E-W x 2.5m N-S) identified as structures E (1192-1011 B.C.) and F (1306-1060 B.C. and 1120-910 B.C.) . Bronze Age pottery was found in two postholes defining the N side of Structure E. The unexcavated field to the W of the Bronze Age house (OF002-053001-) probably contains the remains of the enclosing fence (OF002-053002-) along with other settlement features associated with the excavated house. A geophysical survey was carried out in the field under licence No. 08R142 but the results were inconclusive (Walsh 2011, 9-31). A Bronze Age house (OF002-053001-) with associated settlement features was excavated under licence No. E2677 in the townland of Tober, by Irish Archaeological Consultancy Ltd (I.A.C.) as part of an archaeological mitigation programme associated with the N6 phase 2: Kilbeggan to Athlone dual carriageway scheme. The excavation took place on the W edge of a thin way-leave of a side road connected to the motorway between 7 December 2005 and 2 February 2006. The site was first identified in 2005 by I.A.C. Ltd when archaeological testing was undertaken in this field. The site is located 1.1km N of the village of Tober on gently undulating land with good views in all directions. Ballynahinch crannog (OF001-001----) is located 1.6km to the NNE. The site at Tober 1 consisted of a Bronze Age house (OF002-053001-) defined by two concentric rings of posts with associated ancillary structures, all of which was enclosed by a fence. To the N of the house was uncovered a curving line of postholes (1006-832 B.C.) which may be the remains of a stake and wattle fence enclosing the Bronze Age house. Detached three-bay two-storey over basement former private dwelling, built c.1830, with entrance porch to front elevation. Now in use as parochial house. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystacks, open eaves and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with timber sash windows and tooled limestone sills. Blind windows to rear elevation. Square-headed door openings set into sides of entrance porch with stucco architrave surrounds and replacement timber and glazed doors. Door accessed up limestone steps. Outbuildings to enclosed yard to north of house. Walled garden and ruined farm building to north of house.
- Catholic Church of the Holy Family, church/chapel, 1800–1840, Regional interest, registry number 14902003, https://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah/search.jsp?type=record&county=OF&regno=14902003. Detached cruciform Roman Catholic church, built c.1820, with apse and sacristy to north and entrance porch added later. Located within a yard and located next to the national school. Pitched tiled roof, c.1985, with replacement rainwater goods, decorative limestone coping and skew stones. Cross finials to saddle stones. Pebbledashed walls with smooth rendered plinth and limestone corbelled eaves course. Pointed arched window openings to nave with chamfered limestone surround and hoodmoulding incorporating geometric tracery and stained glass windows. Pair of pointed-arched window openings surmounted by oculi to transepts. Pointed-arched door opening to entrance porch with limestone reveals and glazed double doors. Nave divided by central aisle. Altar in apse to liturgical east end and gallery to liturgical west end. Hammerbeam trusses to interior.
