The earlier fort of Daingean (OF018-006001-) which was an important O'Conor stronghold, with its associated church of 'Cill O Duirthi' [Killaderry] (OF010-035002-), is likely to have had an attendant native Irish settlement. However, the true town of Daingean had its origins in plantation policy commencing with the building of Fort Governor by Sir William Brabazon in 1546, around which a settlement steadily grew despite attacks from the O'More's and O'Conor's. With the shiring of the territory of Ui Failge in 1556, Fort Falkland and its settlement was renamed Philipstown in honour of Philip II of Spain. In 1567 it was incorporated by charter and granted a weekly market. The corporation was requested to fortify the town with fosses and stone wall and although nothing of these walls survive, there are indications of the former fosse on the E, S and W sides of the town. A further grant of c. 1570 refers to 12 messuages and a water mill within it and in 1598 there is mention of a gaol. The street plan is linear, Main St. running on a N-S axis off which the burgage plots extended. Fort Governor stood at the SE end of the street and at the E end of Fort Lane. Two armorial plaques bearing the arms of the Earl of Sussex and Mary Tudor formerly grace the gate entrance to the fort. Additional charters were granted in 1673 and 1688-9, but this walled town unlike its counterpart at Maryborough [Portlaoise] never really flourished and it received a setback, when it was burnt by the O'Conors during the Jacobite wars. It has been suggested that Fort Governor (OF018-006001-) was built on the site of the earlier O'Conor fortification, however Castle Barnagh (OF018-009001-) may have been the earlier O'Conor castle that was later replaced by Fort Governor (OF018-006001-) at a new location around which the sixteenth century settlement of Philipstown grew up around. (Comerford 1885, 303; Bradley 1986, 35-8; Loeber 1991, 16-18) Archaeological test trenching was carried out by Jim Higgins under licence no. 98E0093 prior to the development of a housing development located on the NE side of the Main St and to the SE of Bolger's shop (no. 54 Main St.). Six trenches were excavated and no evidence pre 19th century was uncovered. Test excavation was carried out by Dominic Delany under licence no. 99E0677 ext. on 13 June 2000 at the site of a proposed extension to a licensed premises. The site lies at the north end of the archaeological zone around the historic town of Daingean. The tested area (c. 25m2) had a gravel surface and was used as a storage yard. Four trenches were excavated on the footprint of the proposed extension and its associated services. The gravel surface covered a rubble fill (0.6m thick), which overlay a 2m-thick bog deposit. The bog consisted of a mid- to dark brown/black silt with frequent inclusions of organic matter (branches, twigs, leaves, bark fragments etc.) and occasional animal bone fragments. It was extremely soft, and the overlying rubble was obviously imported onto the site to stabilise the ground. The natural boulder clay was encountered at 2.5m below the existing ground level. A disused circular stone-lined well (0.9m in diameter, c. 1m deep) was discovered at the rear of the existing building. The well was partially covered with wooden planks and was filled with foul water. It was faced internally with roughly hewn limestone blocks and revetted externally by a rubble fill of unmortared cobbles and red brick. The well is undoubtedly a relatively modern feature. No archaeological material was discovered during testing. Test excavation was undertaken by Dominic Delany under licence no. 99E0720 ext. at the site of a proposed residential development on 8 and 9 January 2000. The site consists of a large L-shaped garden plot (max. dimensions 82m north-south x 84m). It is bounded to the west by a water-filled ditch, which may preserve the line of the fosse that surrounded the 16th-century Plantation town. The site of the fort that was the origin of the town is c. 200m east of the proposed development site. The south and east walls of the original courthouse at Daingean survive as boundary walls at the south-east end of the site. The east wall façade and an arched entrance gateway immediately south of it contain date stones bearing the date 1759. Testing comprised the mechanical excavation of six trenches (35-60m long). Several land drains (c. 1.25m wide) and areas of modern disturbance were encountered. The north wall of the courthouse was indicated by a foundation course of large, roughly worked limestone blocks (1.3m wide, 0.3m high), and a robber trench indicated the site of the west wall. A portion of an oval pit (1.9m north-south x 1.1m) was discovered close to the centre of the tested area. A section cutting indicated that it is 0.2m deep, and the fill was a mid-brown, silty clay with occasional inclusions of charcoal flecks, lumps of lime mortar, brick fragments, slate, animal bone, pebbles and small to medium-sized stones. A much larger pit (minimum 6m north-south x 15m) was encountered at the north-west edge of the tested area. It was 0.27m deep, and the fill was a grey, silty clay with moderate inclusions of pebbles, small stones, brick fragments and animal bone. The presence of brick and slate in the fills of these features indicates a post-medieval or early modern date. They may be contemporary with the 18th-century courthouse. Archaeological monitoring was carried out on the Main St. by Declan Moore in 2001 under licence no. 00E0384. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the course of monitoring Test-trenching was carried out under licence no. 04E1041 as part of the planning schedule relating to an extension to a national school adjacent to an enclosure (SMR 18:6). Present remains consist of the fort comprise a large raised almost square area or bawn (dims. c. 82m N-S x 83m E-W) defined by a ditch faced with large sections of walling particularly well preserved at the SW angle. A stone built causeway over the fosse at the centre of the fort's W side, which gives access to the castle, appears to be of more recent origin. There are extensive grass-covered wall-footings of buildings in the enclosed area, with an H-shaped building which is possibly the castle located in the centre of the bawn of which only the wall-footings survive. As late as 1942 (ITA Survey) vesitiges of a bastion (Wth c. 5.35m) were noted projecting out 2.45m from the W wall. There are no upstanding remains of this feature. This is the present location of the stone from Gortnagullenagh, Co. Kerry (KE044-094002) and forms part of the ogham stone collection of the National Museum of Ireland. It was described by Cuppage (1986, no. 699) as follows: 'A cross-inscribed ogham stone formerly acted as a lintel over the doorway to a D-shaped clochaun which stood within the enclosure [KE044-094001-]. This was removed by Hitchcock and presented to the Royal Irish Academy, along with a quernstone also found at the site. . . . A roughly rectangular, sandstone slab measuring .9m high, .27m wide and .1m thick. The inscription is carved along the 2 edges of one face and reads: MAQQI-DECEDDA MAQQI CATUV(........). The V is followed by 3 vowel notches but beyond this the stone is damaged and no definite scores are preserved. There is no consensus amongst earlier researchers as to the termination of the final word. Macalister (1945, 177-8) suggests that the name should be CATUVIQQA. This is the present location of the stone from Glenfahan, Co. Kerry (KE052-188003-) and forms part of the ogham stone collection of the National Museum of Ireland. The stone is described by Cuppage (1986, no. 568) as follows: ‘This slab measures 1.39m in height above the stand in which it is set, is .63m wide at base, and ranges between .02 and . 13m in thickness. Both broad faces and both sides are decorated. The following description is summarised from information provided by Beití Ó Tuama. The upper portion of one face bears a Maltese cross within a subcircular frame, with a short stem pendant from the frame. The cross is formed by 4 sunken panels which are separated from the intervening panels in false relief by narrow grooves, 1cm wide x 1.5cm deep. Beneath this design, on either side of the stem, is a saltire crosslet, that on the left being a plain linear cross, that on the right having slightly expanded terminals. Directly beneath the stem of the main cross is a tunic-clad human figure. A head, upstanding hair (or a halo?), 2 eyes, and a mouth are faintly visible. Even more faint is a diamond-decorated short tunic, from which stick-like arms and legs protrude. The arms appear to bend at the elbows towards the body, and the feet turn outwards in opposing directions. A spiral and chevron design runs down either side of the face from below the main cross to below the human figure where the designs are linked by a C-curve which runs across the width of the stone. The upper part of the opposite face bears a Greek cross with widely-expanded terminals; within the lower terminal is a very slightly raised triangle. Beneath the right terminal is a plain, equal-armed crosslet, and a plain linear crosslet also occurs between the left terminal of the main cross and the edge of the stone. Beneath the crosses, a triple, figure of eight knot spans the width of the stone. The single strand from which the design is formed swings upwards and downwards at opposite ends of the design, and then runs across the width of the stone framing the figure of eights above and below. Much of one side of the stone is decorated with an interlace design, now quite worn. The other side bears an unintelligible ogham inscription on a vertical stem-line. At top the stem-line terminates in a circle, and at base it terminates in an oval beneath which is a diamond motif. If read from bottom to top, the inscription reads LBMCBDV. Macalister (1945, 249) records that 'Two stones were raised from the souterrain of a fort, the name of which is given as "Lisnareabh," on lands in the occupation of a man called Foley, innkeeper of Killorglin, who showed them to Windele. Windele acquired them and removed them to Cork; they are now in the Royal Irish Academy's collection.' This stone is in the National Museum of Ireland. There is a ringfort (KE057-006----) in the townland of Tinnahally named 'Lisnareabagh' on the OS 6-inch map and it contains a souterrain (KE057-006001-). This stone formerly acted as jamb of a cart-house door in a farmyard. The stone is a rough pink sandstone slab (H 5ft 8in; 2ft x 51/2in). When inspected by Macalister it was described as covered in whitewash; most of this has been removed. Part of inscription was buried when read by Macalister (1945, 82, no. 79) and Barry (1897, 43); its top is broken off. The inscription reads as follows: ELUNA MUC……RAN; the extra three letters run along the top. The first three strokes of the R are damaged but the A is clear and the first three strokes of the N are faint but legible. No other letters are discernible (pers. comm. Fionnbarr Moore, 17 April 2015). Macalister and O'Kelly (1944,9) imply that the ogham stone is from a souterrain (CO066-01002-) in Rathcanning fort (CO066-01001-) c. 450m to N. Defaced raised decoration shows a figure in outline only, perhaps robed rather than in armour, resting on a pillow stone, and equipped with a sword. The tip of the scabbard remains intact, and in this detail the stonework is smooth. The long sides of the slab retain an ornate vine scrollwork that forms interlocking fleur de lys. A tendril wraps around the head end to suggest that originally the entire side edge was so decorated. The scrollwork is partly eroded on the left side but is intact on the right side. U-plan extension to rear with central corridor and courtyards, added in 1953. Hipped slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks with terracotta pots and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with smooth rendered plinth. Timber sash windows with block-and-start surrounds and tooled limestone sills. Round-headed central door opening with tooled stone surround abutted by bow-ended porch with ruled-and-lined rendered, string course and cornice, flat roof, Wyatt window, timber door and bootscraper. Large oven in bakery with tiled front and cast-iron opening and flap door. Smooth rendered walls with window openings set within smooth rendered panels. Pointed-arched window openings with chamfered reveals and tooled stone sills with stained glass windows with timber mullions. Modern double-height timber and metal door to south-west elevation and square-headed door opening to north-east elevation with timber door surmounted by timber battened panel and cross. Three-bay nave, two-bay chancel, balcony to south-east, sacristy to north-west. Timber parquet floors to chancel.
