In flat pastureland close to E limits of Ballybrit racecourse. Very poorly preserved circular cashel (D 36.5m) defined by a drystone wall over-lain by a field wall. No visible trace survives of the 'Souterrains' marked in the interior on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1947). A CBG (GA082-011002-) occupies the interior (GA082-010001-). (Rynne 1990) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA082-011002: Children's burial ground, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA082-011002-. Within a ringfort (GA082-011----). The interior has been in use as a graveyard since time of 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map. Though still in use for general burial in 1970 (Topgr. Files, UCG), the name lisheen suggests that this was once restricted to children. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010 - GA082-012001: Castle - tower house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CGA082-012001-. On open, gently undulating pastureland, now part of Ballybrit Racecourse. In existence in 1574 when it was in the possession of 'Redmud Mc Thomus' (Nolan 1901, 115). A diminutive rectangular tower (L 9.17, Wth 4.4m), in fair condition, comprising four storeys: most of the upper storey and parapet are gone. The doorway, centrally placed in NE wall, opens into a lobby with a murder-hole above. This, in turn, gives access to spiral stairs (broken) in E corner, a small chamber in W side and an opposing doorway in SW wall. Stone vaults (also broken) existed between ground/1st floor, and 2nd/3rd floors. There is a fireplace in the NE wall on 2nd floor. The windows are all single-lights with circular or ogival heads. In contrast to the others, the masonry of SW wall is of poor quality. This, and the presence of doorways (one neatly blocked) in this wall on 2nd and 3rd floors, and projecting corbels on S and W corners, indicates that a second phase was intended. Whether this was of wood or ever actually built is open to question. A settlement cluster (GA082-012002-) is associated. To W of Ballybrit Castle (GA082-012002-). Though not shown on the published OS 6-inch maps, it is marked on the 1819 Grand Jury Maps and OS Fair Plans as an extensive settlement of houses and earthworks (info. GBCAS Files). What survives today ; is a series of bumps and hollows representing the remains of house platforms and field systems (CUCAP B61; 37, 39, 40). In rough pastureland within the grounds of the Ballybrit racecourse. This circular rath (diam. 56m) was originally defined by an unusually low broad bank (Wth 8-10m; H 1m). In 1971 when the racecourse was widened the NW quadrant of the enclosing bank and part of the interior were removed under archaeological supervision (Waddell 1971, 73-9). The rest of the monument was undisturbed. A low L-shaped earthen mound noted in NW quadrant of the interior, prior to the works, proved to be the remains of a small double wall-faced drystone structure (max. dims. 4m E-W; 3.8m N-S; ) constructed of undressed limestone blocks. Its purpose was not obvious and its date was inconclusive as no finds were recovered from it. Slightly W of centre traces of a house (GA082-013001-) were evident, and E of this a Y-shaped earthen bank (av. Wth 2m; H 0.5m) appeared to be an internal division. Slight surface irregularities in the SW quadrant may have marked other structural remains and 5m to the S of the bank were the remains of another subrectangular structure (max. int. Wth 5m) (ibid., 73). No trace of a fosse was noted (ibid., 74). Finds included post-medieval pottery, a bronze spear butt and a hone stone. An enclosure (GA082-014----) lay 25m to the W. In rough pastureland within the grounds of the Ballybrit racecourse; some 25m to the W of a rath (GA082-013----). Marked on 3rd ed. of OS 6-inch map (1945-6) as a roughly semicircular enclosure defined by a bank from SSW through W to N. In 1971 when the racecourse was widened most of the monument was removed and only a short arc of the bank (L 5m; Wth 2m; H 0.4m) from SSW to WSW remained undisturbed. No trace of a fosse was evident. Excavation produced nothing but a single post-medieval pot sherd (Waddell 1971, 73-9). It was not possible to determine the original plan of the enclosure and there was no indication that it was ever more than a rough semicircle in plan (ibid., 74).
