The present Church of Ireland on Church Avenue was rebuilt in 1717, probably on the site of the monastery founded by St. Mobhi (d. 544 AD). The 16th century life of St. Columba by Manus O'Donnell describes a miracle whereby the huts and church of St Mobhi ended up of on the east bank of the Tolka (Killanin & Duignan 1967, 251). During the 13th century this church was part of the homefarm for the Priory of the Holy Trinity, Christchurch (Ball 1920, 124-147). The N wall is thicker in the W tower indicating that it may be earlier than the existing church. In 1941 two skeletons were discovered when a path was being laid in Church Lane and in 1956 a number of skeletons were discovered on a site N of Mobhi Lane, just E of the church. Finds included animal bones and a knife-like iron object (NMI 1956-16). These burials suggest that the burial ground associated with the Early medieval foundation extended much further than the present graveyard wall. In 1951 burials were discovered during the digging of foundations for the Bon Secour Hospital. The burials were inspected by A. T. Lucas from the National Museum. Excavations took place in the vicinity of the hospital in 1989 and 1996, but no archaeological features were discovered (Mc Mahon 1990, 19-20; Carroll 1997, 34). There is a marked curvature in the property boundary to the NE, E and S of St. Mobhi Church of Ireland (diam. c. 200m) which is indicative of the former existence of an ecclesiastical enclosure. This motte is located in a prominent position at the end of a ridge just to the N of the River Tolka and 380m W of the Nevin stream. It consists of a flat-topped and steeply-sided earthwork c 4.4m high and 15m in overall diameter and is referred to as a motte (O' Doherty 2011, 19). The monument is indicated as an incomplete circular enclosure on the first edition of the ordnance survey maps adjacent to Carlingford House and is referred to as a motte (O' Doherty 2011, 19). A 19th century map of Carlingford House shows the monument enclosed by a wall with a circular feature on the summit, since removed. Another 19th century map refers to a level of 53.3 on ‘top of Battlement ’, presumably referring to the motte. Portions of the base of the monument are bound by a variety of walls, a section of which comprising a high, roughly coursed drystone wall collapsed on the 7th of March 2016. The Hearth Money Rolls for County Dublin (1664) list 10 houses with hearths in Glasnevin. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
