On a low hill overlooking the River Shannon to the E, on or close to the site of the medieval borough of Meelick (GA108-234----). This Franciscan friary was certainly in existence c. 1414 and was probably founded by Braswell(?) O'Madden. In 1445 Pope Eugenius IV granted an indulgence for its repair. Though it was ruinous after the Dissolution, it was reoccupied and repaired a number of times in the late 16th and 17th centuries (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 254-5). The Jacobite soldier, John Stevens, visited Meelick en route to Athlone in June 1691. He records in his journal that ‘Here is also the residence of a few Franciscan friars only remarkable for the poverty of their house and chapel which are nothing but long thatched cabins. The walls of a handsome chapel designed by these friars are standing, but never roofed or further finished than the raising of them to their full height.’ (Murray 1912, 202). The surviving monument consists of a restored rectangular church (35m E-W; 7.5m N-S), which is still in use. The original doorway, in the W gable, is surmounted by a 17th-century round-headed window of three lights. The whole E gable has been rebuilt since the time of the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 2, 55-7). A blocked arch at the E end of the S side-wall led to a transept (L c. 7m; W 4.5m), which is now reduced to its foundations. A pair of blocked arches about mid-point along the S wall may also have led to a transept or a short S aisle. A carved figure of St Francis was subsequently inserted between the arches (Harbison 1975, 97). Dr Christy Cunniffe (field-monuments.galwaycommunityheritage.org/content/archaeology/churches/effigy-st-francis, last accessed 7 January 2019) suggests that it came from either a decorated tomb or from the cloister arcade. A 17th-century doorway in the N side-wall gave access to the cloister area. The lintel bears a much spalled inscription the only parts of which may be deciphered as follows: ‘Inceperunt fratres minor/e[s] . . . are monas[teriu]m / D . . . Ano Dn 16 –.’ The spalling appears to have resulted from fire. As the lettering corresponds with others on the various wall plaques and memorials of later 17th century date this inscription may commemorate a rebuilding by the friars at this period. The cloister area to the north is flanked on its E side by a ruined building (N-S; L 13m; Wth 3,2m) marked 'Convent Chapel' (GA108-124005-) on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map. A second two-storey ruin (L 12m; Wth 7.5m), probably on the site of the west range, is named 'Friars Ho.' (GA108-124008-) on the same map. It is possible that these are the buildings referred to in Stevens’s journal above. There are a number of 17th- and 18th-century graveslabs and plaques (see GA108-124006-, GA108-124007- and GA108-124010- to GA108-124027-) in the church and its graveyard, which lies to S and E. This fortification may date from the time of the mid-17th century wars. It is situated on Cromwell's Island in the River Shannon immediately E of the medieval borough of Meelick (GA108-234----). A small tower-like building is represented on the Down Survey (1655-6) map of Co. Offaly and the name ‘Milcke forts’ (Meelick Forts) printed on the Co. Galway side of the river may refer to this. The Down Survey map (1655-6) map of the barony of Garricastle , Co. Offaly, represents the fort as a square bastioned work. It may have been converted into a battery in the 18th/early 19th century when a building was erected in the interior. It is shown on the OS 1st ed. 6-inch sheet (surveyed 1838) as a trapezoidal shape represented by a double line and is named 'Battery'. It is also named 'Battery' on the OS 1884 OS 1:2500 plan (surveyed 1884) where it is shown as a trapezoidal earthen fortification having a demi-bastion on the south and an entrance on the east. The building depicted on the 1st ed. map is not indicated. It was probably removed in the early decades of hte 20th century when the embankment stretching from Portumna to Meelick was constructed by the Electricity Supply Board. This bank or levée was built to act as a dam or dyke to control the winter water levels along the Galway side of the River Shannon and reduce flooding. On inspection in 1984 no visible surface trace of the battery survived. Situated on Cromwell's Island in the River Shannon immediately E of the medieval borough of Meelick (GA108-234----) this fortification dates from the time of the mid-17th century wars and was erected by the Royalist-Confederate forces. The following account records the taking of the fort by the Parliamentary army in 1650: ‘Meleek Island, bordering upon the Shannon, into which there is only one pass, with bogs on each side; . . . Upon the five and twentieth of October, half an hour before night, our forces made an attempt upon the enemy, and after a small dispute beat them off from the first and second guard on the pass; but at the third the dispute was so hot, that they came to but-end of musket, and God being pleased to give our forces an entrance into the island, the whole body of the enemy was presently routed. They left all their arms, we took two hundred of their horse, all their waggons, oxen, tents, provisions, and whatsoever else they had in their whole camp; among which were [the Earl of] Clanrickard's own waggons and tent . . . The number of what men the enemy lost, is not certainly known; for beside those who were killed, multitudes were drowned. Five hundred of them were forced into the Shannon by one party of our horse in one place, and there were all drowned in one company together. The Irish report, that there was not above three hundred of the enemy which escaped, and that most of those were such as swam over the Shannon; which agrees with the relation of a trumpeter, who was the next day sent . . . to enquire after prisoners, who confessed that all but three hundred were lost; we lost only one Captain, viz. Captain Goff, with eight common soldiers, and twenty wounded.’ (Gilbert 1880, iii, 185) A small garrison was left there but these were overcome by the Royalist-Confederate troops at the end of July 1651: ‘there was not so much as a sentry found awake: and that all in it were put to the sword, the governor only excepted.’ (Gilbert 1880, iii, 348). The fort was retaken by forces under Sir Charles Coote in October as reported in the following account: ‘a breach being made, your forces stormed twice and were both times repelled; but the third time the place was carried, 140 killed and drowned, 200 taken prisoners, besides officers, whereof eight captains.’ (Dunlop 1913, i, 68). A small tower-like building is represented on the Down Survey (1655-6) map of Co. Offaly and the name ‘Milcke forts’ (Meelick Forts), which is printed on the Co. Galway side of the river, may refer to this. It was probably removed in the early decades of the 20th century when the embankment stretching from Portumna to Meelick was constructed by the Electricity Supply Board. This bank or levée was built to act as a dam or dyke to control the winter water levels along the Galway side of the River Shannon and reduce flooding. On inspection in 1984 no visible surface trace of this fortification survived. In level poorly drained pastureland, c. 100m to the NNE of Meelick friary (GA108-124) and the possible site of a medieval borough (GA108-234----). Prior to drainage works on the river Shannon, this ringwork stood right on the W bank of the old course of the river. It consists of a well-preserved large irregularly shaped platform (53m NE-SW; 40m NW-SE) which is defined by an earthen bank from SE through S to N; elsewhere a scarp forms the enclosing element. There is an entrance gap (Wth 10m) at SW, where the bank splays slightly outwards with possible traces of an approach ramp externally. A small roughly circular depression (diam. c. 3.5m) is visible in the interior to the E of centre. A smaller earthwork (GA108-124003-) lies immediately to the W. According to Madden (1902, 21), the monument was ‘surrounded by tall and stately trees’ but these have since been removed. Possibly the site of the 13th-C de Burgo castle (Sweetman 1999, 9) but see also GA108-124009-.
