Situated in grounds on the S bank of the Liffey at Kilmainham. This hospital was built to the design of William Robinson, Surveyor general and was completed in 1684; the steeple tower in 1701. It was laid out on a courtyard and piazza plan with an open ground floor, arcading on three sides and part of a fourth. The N front is built of calp stone withlimestone, granite and plaster dressing. The doorways at the centre of each range have tympana of carved wood. Over the main doors are the arms of the First Duke of Ormonde. In the N range are from W to E, the Master's Lodging, the Great Hall and the Chapel (Killannin, Lord & Duignan 1967, 233). According to Craig (1982, 153-6) this is the oldestsurviving fully Classical building in Ireland and the largest secularbuilding of it's period. It was designed to take 300 pensioners on its three floors. These were old soldiers who had fought in the wars. Kilmainham has been compared to Les Invalides, Paris, which was built byKing Louis, 1670-1676 (Craig 1982, 153-6). Archaeological excavations were carried out on the grounds in 1976, prior to restoration. The remains of cobbled paths were uncovered associated with late 18th-century pottery and clay pipes (Sweetman 1975-6, 32). This building is being restored by the OPW (Craig & Knight of Glin 1970, 50). - DU018-020286: Religious house - Knights Hospitallers, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CDU018-020286-. The priory for the Knights of the Order of St John the Baptist of Jerusalem was founded by Richard de Clare in 1174. Its landed possessions included 500 acres in the vicinity of the Priory. This incorporated the monastery of Cill Maigneann on the present grounds of the Royal Hospital. The historical sources describe an outer and inner enclosure at the priory; the inner enclosure contained a castle with a quadrangle surrounded by a strong wall with towers at four corners. The outer enclosure surrounded the castle on every side with a gate on the S side facing the common green atKilmainham. A parochial church stood near the present high cross on the grounds of Kilmainham hospital (18:20(284). In 1859 fragments of floor tiles for this church were dug up near the cross (Anon 1858-59, 444). The Down Survey (1655-6) for Kilmainham shows the remains of the priory still standing though in a ruinous state. In 1681 the Royal Hospital was built near the old ruinous building called the castle of Kilmainham. The demolished material was used in the new building. Excavations by Bersu in 1948 exposed medieval floor tiles, a stonw wall and well (Kenny 1995, 89). Some of this stonework was exposed during restoration work in the 1970s (Gwynn & Hadcock 1970, 334-335; Kenny 1995, 43; Clarke 2002, 19). Works at or in relation to a recorded monument need two months' written notice to the National Monuments Service (National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994, section 12). ## Architectural heritage (National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) No building of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage stands on this parcel. ## Ground and risks (Radon Risk Map of Ireland, EPA; Landslide Susceptibility Classification and LiDAR, Geological Survey Ireland) - Radon: at the centre of this parcel, about 1 in 20 homes in this area is likely to have high radon levels.
