Situated in bushes on a N-S spit of gravel at the W end of Gardice Lough, and c. 50m S of where the Ballinamore-Ballyconnel canal enters the lake. It is indicated as a small feature on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map. A circular grass-covered area (int. diam. 8.5m) is defined by a spread of stones (Wth c. 1.5m) but it does not have an entrance and it might not be artificial. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). Located on a slight E-W rise towards the bottom of an E-facing slope on the W shore of a bottle-shaped bay (dims c. 900m N-S; c. 200m E-W at S to c. 450m E-W at N) on the N side of Gardice Lough. The site of the medieval parish church of Drumreilly or Drumybeallaich – ridge of the eastern road - is within a subrectangular graveyard (dims c. 65m E-W; c. 40m N-S) defined by masonry walls. There are documentary references from the early 15th century (Seymour 1935; Earley and Boyle 1999) when the rectory of Cinel Luachain, which may have been formed from the ancient tuath of the Masraige in Magh Sleacht and which consisted of the parishes of Oughteragh (LE025-008001-) and Drumreilly, was disputed between Gelasious (Giolla Íosa) O’Mulmochery and Luke O’Rodaghan in 1410. The former may have been from a family of hereditary erenachs of a forgotten monastery of Drumreilly, while the latter was a member of the erenach family of the ancient monastery of Fenagh (LE025-096001-). The dispute continued throughout the century amongst their families. The most likely origin of the Ó Maolmochéirghe family is from the Cairpre Mór of north Leitrim in the ninth century (MacCotter 2019, 73), and the large estate attached to Drumreilly church, amounting to twelve townlands, can be distinguished as Church or cross land on the Down Survey (1656-8) parish map (ibid. 75). The present Church of Ireland church of Drumreilly was built in 1737 by William Gore (Lewis 1837, vol. 1, 520) and may incorporate some medieval fabric. Two corbels with carved heads in the W gable could be in their original position and there is a base-batter in the E wall. The carved head of a bishop and a grotesque mouth-pulling carved head are built into the outer face of the E gable. The base of a finial cross, and a window mullion with part of the head of a two-light ogee-headed window of fifteenth century date area kept in the present church. There is a tapering graveslab (Wth 0.47m at W to 0.53m at E; L 1.63m plus) with a legend carved in false relief in the graveyard, N of the E end of the church. The legend is in English and carved in roman capitals, but it is illegible. However, it could be seventeenth century in date. A hospital, which may have been a guest-house for poor travellers, at Drumerbalaid (Drumreilly) was described in 1479 as so poorly funded that it could not be maintained alone and should be united with the rectory (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 350, 382; Earley and Boyle 1999, 110). The location of the hospital is unknown and it might be anywhere within the parish, although probably close to the parish church (LE025-058001-). Situated on Church Island in Garadice Lough. This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 14.55m E-W; 7.05m N-S; int. dims 12.7m E-W; 5.1m N-S at W to 5.25m N-S at E), with dressed sandstone quoins and reveals to the embrasures, which survives almost complete (H 3-4m), except for portions of the S wall. There is a destroyed doorway in the W wall and cupboards towards the E end of the N wall and towards the S end of the E wall. There is a cusped two-centre headed window (Wth 0.22m; H 0.65m) in the E wall and a pointed light (Wth 0.1m; H 0.63m) towards the E end of the S wall with the E side of another window embrasure further W. The W end of the structure and most of the N and S walls, including its surviving light, are of thirteenth century date but the E wall and its window were constructed in the fifteenth century. There is a tradition of a burial place reserved for O’Rourke (OS Name Book), but there is no evidence of an enclosure or of burial. A bullaun stone (dims 0.9m x 0.8m; H c. 0.3m plus) with a single basin (diam. 0.4m x 0.45m; D 0.25m) is situated c. 120m N of the church (Byrne 1997, 8). Some conservation work had been conducted on the church in 2005-07 with support from the American-based Everan foundation (Earley 2005), but when the monument was inspected in May 2013, the very fine 15th-century window in the E gable wall was found to have been robbed out. However, after a Facebook campaign it was soon recovered and re-instated. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Situated in woodland towards the NW corner of the heart-shaped Cherry Island (dims c. 280m N-S; 250m E-W), formerly known as Hog Island or Inis na dTorc, in Garadice Lough, formerly called Lough Finvoy. In 1257 Con, the son of Tiernan O'Rourke gave the island, described as fortified, to O'Conor (AFM), but It is thought to have been an O’Rourke castle until they transferred their centre to Drumahaire (LE014-009----) and north Leitrim after 1418, in which year Owen, the son of Tiernan Mór O’Rourke, was drowned while returning from a visit to his dying father at Inis-na-dTorc (AFM). By the seventeenth century the island and castle was said to have belonged to Myles ‘the Slasher’ O’Reilly, whose principal stronghold as at Crane Island (LE026-006----) at the SE edge of the lake. The surviving structure is unlikely to date from the thirteenth century. It is a rectangular building (int. dims 19.55m E-W; 8.05m N-S) with the W wall surviving (H 2.7m; T 1.2-1.3m) best, although without the corners, while the other walls are reduced to the foundation courses. The walls are featureless, apart from some putlog holes in the W wall, and not even an entrance can be identified. It is situated within a D-shaped enclosure (dims 31m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by a stone spread with the straight E side 4m from the castle, but an entrance cannot be identified. A cairn (diam. c. 15m; H 1.5-2.5m) containing a kiln (diam. 2.1m; D 0.95m) which opens to the W is overlying the enclosure wall at W and SW of the castle. Traditionally the island is associated with the United Irishman rebel Myles 'The Slasher' O'Reilly of uncertain authenticity (Blaney 1944, file no. 135), but this is probably the result of confusion with Colonel Myles O’Reilly, or Maol Mórdha Mac Edmond O’Reilly, who was the sheriff of Co. Cavan at the outbreak of the 1641 rebellion, and one of its instigators. Myles was a second cousin of Philip Mc Hugh O’Reilly, who became the commander of the Ulster rebel army towards the end of the struggle against Cromwellian forces. After the Ulster rebels were defeated at Scarriffhollis, Co. Donegal in June 1650, the rebels were confined increasingly to the fastnesses of Fermanagh, Cavan and Leitrim, and it is thought that Myles undertook the fortification of a number of islands, one of which was Crane Island at Lough Gardice (O’Reilly 1924). His fortifications at Crane Island were never tested as Myles surrendered with the rest of the rebel army at Clogh Oughtar in April 1653 (Manning 2013, 31), after which he went to the Continent where he died in 1670. This is an overgrown scrub-covered rectangular area (dims 41m NW-SE; 23m NE-SW) defined by a collapsed and grass-covered mortared wall (Wth 0.8-1m; H 0.5m) with the remains of a circular tower (int. diam. 3.7m; H 1.3m), which has a doorway (Wth 0.9m) with an outer rebate and two surviving gun-loops, situated at the N angle. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
