The site of the parish church of Ardcarn, listed as Ardcarna in the Papal taxation of 1306 (Cal. Doc. Ire., vol. 5, 224), on the site of an early church (RO006-103002-). Situated on the NE-facing slope of a Ardcarn Hill. Rectangular graveyard (RO006-103004-) (dims 85m E-W; 60m N-S) defined by a mortared stone wall. The sandstone jamb of a medieval doorway is used as a headstone, and a limestone armorial plaque (RO06-103005-) erected by Cormac MacDermot, possibly a son of Owen Mac Conor Og of Aghacarra (Mulhall 1907-09; Mac Dermot 1996, 360), in honour of his wife Elinor Crean in 1688 is situated just E of the present Church of Ireland church in the graveyard. It consists of a crucifixion over the crests of both families and a largely illegible inscription, all within a raised border (Wth 1.4m; H 1.95m). A cross-inscribed stone (RO006-103019-) is just S of the E end of the present church which was damaged in a fire in 1858 and re-dedicated in 1860. The site is within an extensive deserted settlement (RO006-103007-). (Weld 1832, 245-6; O'Flanagan 1931, 90-91; D'Alton 1845, 93-6; Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 29) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010 Amended: 17 April, 2014 - RO006-103002: Church, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO006-103002-. This is the site of an early church which was reputedly founded by St Beo Aodh or Beoaidh in the 6th century. Little is known of this saint but the genealogists attach him to the Corca Laoighde of south Munster, and he may be identical with the Beoaidh of the church (LE018-037----) on Inchmagrath Island in Lough Allen (Ó Riain 2011, 103). Nothing is known of its history thereafter, but it was important enough to be made a diocesan centre between the synods of Rathbrassil (AD 1111) and Kells (AD 1152), and an erenagh is mentioned in 1240 (Tonra 1998, 55). In the later middle ages it was also the parish church of Ardcarn (RO006-103001-). Its precise location is uncertain but was generally on the NE-facing slope of Ardcarn Hill, surrounded by the earthworks of the deserted settlement (RO006-103007-). The site of the nunnery (RO006-103003-) is at the bottom of this slope c. 150m to the SE of the present Church of Ireland church. The early church may have been situated in the new graveyard on a steep NE-facing slope of Ardcarn Hill, which is described as the site of Templemihil only on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, where a small cross-inscribed pillar (RO006-103006-) (H 0.55m; 0.1-0.17m x 0.1m) is situated (Herity et al. 1997, 114). A second cross-inscribed stone (RO006-103020-) identified in this graveyard by Mary B. Timoney in 2015. A third cross-inscribed stone (RO006-103019-) is just S of the E end of the present church in the old graveyard. (Weld 1832,245-6; O'Flanagan 1931,90-91; D'Alton 1845,93-6; Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 29; Tonra 1998) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 22 May, 2015 - RO006-103003: Religious house - Augustinian, of Arrouaise nuns, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO006-103003-. An Arroasian house of nuns and canons was established as St Mary's, Ardcarn, probably in the 12th century, and the church was enlarged by Clarus Mac Mailin in 1243. By 1223 it had been annexed to the convent of Kilcreevanty, Co. Galway (Hall 2003, 79). An inquisition in 1590 describes the nunnery as a church and two houses of stone. In 1595 it was granted to a Terence O'Byrne, and in 1598 to Trinity College, Dublin. It is situated on flat dry ground at the base of the E-facing slope of Ardcarn Hill. The visible remains consist of the foundations of a mortared stone wall (L 8.67 NW-SE, Wth 0.75m, H 1.75m) within the field-system (RO006-103007-). (Weld 1832, 245-6; O'Flanigan 1931, 90-91; D'alton 1845, 93-6; Gwynne and Hadcock 1988, 312; Tonra 1998) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010 - RO006-103004: Graveyard, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO006-103004-. On the E-facing slope of Ardcarn Hill. Rectangular graveyard (dims 85m E-W; 60m N-S) on the site of the medieval parish church (RO006-103001-) defined by a mortared stone wall. A sandstone jam of a medieval doorway is used as a headstone as is a fragment of a window surround. A limestone memorial plaque erected by Cormac MacDermot, possibly a son of Owen Mac Conor Og of Aghacarra (Mac Dermot 1996, 360), in honour of his wife Elinor Crean in 1688 is situated just E of the present Church of Ireland church in the graveyard. There is a cross-inscribed stone (RO006-103019-) just S of the E end of the present church which was revamped in 1860 at the NW edge of the graveyard. A new graveyard (dims c. 100m NE-SW; c. 70m NW-SE) defined by masonry walls was built by 1914 and it contains the cross-inscribed stone (RO006-103006-) and a second cross-inscribed stone (RO006-103020-) identified by Mary B. Timoney in 2015. Archaeological supervision (14E0166) of the laying of a drain in the new graveyard produced no archaeological material (Timoney 2016). The early monastery of Ardcarn (RO006-103001-) was also the site of Ardcarn parish (RO006-103002-) in the later midlle ages and is situated on the E-facing slope of Ardcarn Hill. A limestone armorial plaque erected by Cormac MacDermot, possibly a son of Owen Mac Conor Og of Aghacarra (Mulhall 1907-09; Mac Dermot 1996, 360), in honour of his wife Elinor Crean in 1688 is situated just E of the present Church of Ireland church in the graveyard (RO006-103004-). Towards the top of an E-facing slope in the new graveyard (dims. c. 90m NE-SW; c. 70m NW-SE) at Ardcarn church site (RO006-103002-) which is marked 'Templemihil' only on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. A small slab (dims. 0.1-0.2m x 0.1m; H 0.53m) inscribed with a small cross (H 0.11m; Wth 0.09m) on one face is at the site (Herity et al. 1997,114). Archaeological testing (14E0166) for the laying of a drainage pipe at the S corner of the new graveyard in the vicinity of this stone produced no related material (Timoney 2014). On an E-facing slope with rock outcrop, between Ardcarn church (RO006-103001-) and the NW-SE line of the N4 which turns WSW c. 300m N of the church. Nothing survives N and E of the N4. An area of c. 30 ha (c. 80 acres) containing D-shaped, wedge-shaped and rectangular fields (dims 23m x 17m to 140m x 125m). The field boundaries are defined by grass-covered scarps, collapsed stone walls and earthen banks (Wth 3-5m; H 0.2-1m). A roadway (RO006-103012-), visible in part as a hollow way (Wth 4-6m; D 0.2-0.5m), runs NE-SW from rath (RO006-149----) (L c. 800m), curving N around the base of Ardcarn hill (L c. 300m). At its N end it meets a NW-SE roadway (RO006-103008-), visible in part as a hollow way (Wth 5-10m; L c. 700m) (Halpin 1995) which is parallel with the N4 and c. 30-40m from it. The angle between the relict roads is foreshortened by another hollow way (L c. 260m) c. 230m short of their junction. The nunnery (RO006-103003-) is situated within this triangle, and there are three house-sites in this area including (RO006-103013-) a rectangular grass-covered platform (dims 6.5m N-S; 6m E-W; H 0.3m), (RO006-103014-) a subcircular grass-covered area (int. dims 8.5m E-W; 7.8m N-S) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 1.65-4m; int. H 0.3-0.7m; ext. H 0.3-1m) with an entrance (Wth 1.5m) at E, and (RO006-103015-) a rectangular structure (int. dims 12m E-W; 5.8m N-S) defined by the base of a double-faced wall (Wth 1-1.3m) with no visible entrance. About 200m N of Ardcarn Church is the site of a rath (RO006-103009-) and a cairn (RO006-103011-), and there is a mound (RO006-103018-) c. 450m WNW of the church. The S end of the field system incorporates two cashels (RO006-103016-; RO006-103017-). Archaeological testing (Henry 2000a) prior to the widening of the N4 at the NE edge of the earthwork complex failed to produce any dating or settlement evidence, but excavation showed that the banks were composed of earth (Wth 4-5m; H 0.4m) overlain by field stones or the remnants of drystone walls.
