Marked on the 1837 and 1928 eds of the OS 6-inch map and described as Ballylough or O'Flynn's Castle in gothic lettering on both. It is situated towards the SE edge of a flat-toped hill. The O'Flynn were chiefs of Siol Maolruain, a sept of the Uí Brionn, but were not of Silmurry although they attended O'Conor inaugurations. The sept went into decline after the fourteenth century, but they retained lands around Lough O'Flynn. They were also erenaghs of Assylin church (RO005-020001-) near Boyle (MacDermot 1996, 409-10). The foundation of a portion of the castle was visible (Gannon 1972) but it is not visible now on the lawn of a house, although a low wall (Wth c. 0.5m; H 0.3m; L c. 10m) on the boundary between two properties is thought to be part of it. On a low hillock. Subcircular grass-covered but poached area (dims 32.8m NW-SE; 29m NE-SW) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 3.5m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.5m) at SE and a scarp (H 0.5-0.6m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse, and the modernised entrance (Wth 3m) is at SE. The perimeter is truncated slightly by a NW-SE road bank at NE, but possible houses (RO025-017002-) which were visible in 1984 as a low stony mound (dims 6m NE-SW; 5m NW-SE) at the centre and inside the perimeter at E (RO025-017003-) (SMR file) can no longer be seen. Archaeological testing (06E0546) c. 130m to the NW failed to produce any relate material (Moore 2009). Archaeological monitoring (08E0976) of a sewer trench under existing roads on the outskirts of Ballinlough recorded evidence of a burnt mound in section as a layer of broken and burnt stones (L 11m NW-SE; T c. 0.5m) c. 0.5m beneath the road surface. It was confirmed in a small trench on the other side of the road, so that it would appear to be preserved beneath the road (dim. c. 9m NE-SW). A sample produce evidence of alder, hazel and oak, and produced a C14 date of 1048-851 cal. BC. Board of First Fruits style Church of Ireland church, built in 1818. Comprising two-bay nave abutting three-stage castellated tower with pinnacles to west and vestry to south-east. Pitched slate roof with rendered and cut stone chimneystacks, limestone coping to gable ends and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast-rendered walls with random coursed stone to eastern gable wall and to tower. String courses to first and second stages of tower. Pointed-arched traceried windows to nave with stained glass. Tooled limestone surrounds and hood mouldings. Square-headed diamond-paned windows to second stage of tower.
