Roscommon town (RO039-043----) appears to have been defended, but no walls survive and their course is unknown, but a gate at the S end of Main St. survived as late as the early 19th century and appears on maps by Francis Plunkett (1736) (Bradley and Dunne 1988a, 91) and D. A. Beaufort (1808) (Siggins 1998b). Archaeological monitoring (19E0428) by P. Walsh of the trench for a water-pipe on Main St at the junction with Church St and Goff St identified on the E side of the trench what is probably a medieval wall just 0.2m below the road surface. Its width could not be gauged but the wall face extended along the trench (L 5.5m) and beyond its depth (D 0.96m). The earlier water-pipe took advantage of the passage of the town gate at this point. Five dressed stones were set into the back wall of a garden in Chapel Lane where a Roman Catholic church was located from 1756 to 1834 when the old Session House (RO9039-043015-) was converted into a church. However, the crucifixion plaque is thought to have come originally from St. Coman's Well (RO039-047----) (Siggins 1998c). The plaque (Wth 0.37-0.39m; H 0.33-0.36m) is in relief showing the crucifixion and two figures (Timoney 1980, 142-3). It is surrounded by some fragments of medieval tracery. After re-development of the area it is now displayed on a wall in Chapel Lane. See the attached image. Situated on a gentle SE-facing slope within Roscommon town. The monastery was founded by St Comán, supposedly a disciple of St Finnian of Clonard, in the 6th century. Comán was a son of Faolchú and is reliably connected with the Dál nAraidhe of north-east Ulster. He died in 747 and his feastday is celebrated on 26th December. The 'law of St Comán' was proclaimed over much of Connaught in 771, 779 and 792 (Ó Rian 2011, 216-7). The monastery may have been raided by the Vikings in 807 (AU, 263), but this is unlikely. However, it was burnt in 823 and again in 1134. The processional cross known as the cross of Cong was made for this church, possibly at the church, in 1123 as a gift from Turlough O'Conor. The church became the diocesan centre after the Synod of Kells in 1152, but this honour had been moved to Elphin (RO016-127001-) by 1172. The Augustinian Rule was adopted c. 1140, and the church continued in use as an Augustinian house until the Dissolution, although the dedication may have changed to St. Mary's in the 13th century when it might also have had a community of nuns. Coarbs continue into the thirteenth century at least. It was plundered by the de Burgos in 1204 and 1260, and was burnt in 1235 and 1247 and 1360 (Gwynne and Hadcock 1970, 191-2, 323). After the monastery was suppressed c. 1540 its land was granted to Sir Nicholas Malby (Hoare 2014), who transformed the Castle (RO039-043006-) into the fortified house (RO039-043010-) also on the site today. The monastery consisted of at least one stone church and a round tower, which was burnt in 1050 by the men of Breiffne (AFM vol. 2, 859). It is described as a ruined church, hall and cloister in 1578 (Bradley and Dunne 1988a, 97-8). It was centered on the site now occupied by the Church of Ireland church of St. Comán, which was built in the 18th century and where some fragments of transitional 12th century masonry (RO039-043008-) are incorporated into the tower. The head of a 13th century lancet window is kept within the church. The present E gable has a three-light decorated window, much of which is original, while internally its embrasure has a decorated surround with pinnacles, dating from c. 1450. Inside the church there is a wall memorial to the Gunnings of Castlecoote dated 1717 that might have been moved from Fuerty church (RO039-063001-), and to Lovelaces of Ballybride dated 1723. There is also a wall memorial (RO039-043017-) dated 1696 to John and Catherine Fleming of Roscommon, although it may have been moved to here. An inscribed slab (dims 0.93m x 0.41-0.65m; T 0.06-0.15m) (RO039-043009-) which dates to the 9th century asks for a blessing on Ioseph and is now in the Roscommon County Museum. A cross-slab (RO039-043016-) (dims 1m x 0.7m; max. T 0.13m) decorated with the stem of a cross and traces of ring also has a panel of interlace and roundels at the edge of the stone (Siggins, 1996; Barton 1996). The latter was moved to a position against the S wall of the present church in 2013. Both were found in the rectangular graveyard (RO039-043007-) (dims c. 80m E-W; c. 45m N-S) which also contains fragments of the masonry of a large Gothic window, and a cross-slab (RO039-043028-) with a crudely-incised latin cross and a single-line ring is used as a grave-marker. Human bones were uncovered in Goff St. to the E c. 1917. The holy well of St. Comán's Vat (RO039-047----) is c. 600m to the NW. On top of a broad hill within Roscommon town. A tower of two storeys but of unknown function is marked here on a map of 1736 by Francis Plunket (copy in Roscommon County Museum). The jail was reputedly designed by Richard Cassels, was built by 1745, and had the distinction of employing a hangwoman, lady Betty. It closed as a jail c. 1819 when the new jail (RO039-043003-) was built. From 1820 until 1833 it became an asylum (Weld 1832, 423-5). Thereafter it served as a market house, but by 1918 it had been converted into a dwelling called Tudor House. In 1985 most of the cell block, which had three storeys, was demolished, and only the administrative block of four storeys attached to its S survives. Excavation (97E0419) revealed no evidence of an earlier structure but the outline of the cell block (ext. dims c. 14m N-S; 10.5m E-W) with 8 cells (dims c. 2.5m x 2.5m) in all, four on either side of a N-S corridor (Wth 1.3m) was uncovered. A Dominican friary was established by Felimid O'Conor in 1253. It was burned in 1270 and struck by lightning in 1308. By 1445 it was in disrepair when an indulgence was granted to restore its fabric, and in 1578 it was granted to Sir Nicholas Malby. In 1615 the friary was granted to Francis Viscount Valentia, but it had been described as in ruins in 1612. It is situated on a slight rise in a low-lying landscape. (Gwynn and Hadcock 1980, 229) The remains consist of a nave and chancel church (int. dims 40m E-W; 6.8m N-S) entered through a modern entrance in the W gable. There is a N aisle (int. dims 22.8m E-W; 3.3m N-S), now represented by three circular piers separating it from the nave. A N transept (int. dims 6.6m E-W; 5.4m N-S) with a three-light N window, now robbed, was added to the E end of the N aisle in the 15th century, at which time a tower was put over the chancel, of which only the bases of the S piers survive. The E window of the chancel, originally of three lancets, was replaced with a five-light tracery window, now robbed, and the W window, originally of three lancets, was replaced with a four-light tracery window, now robbed. There were six lancets on the S nave wall, placed above the cloister roof, and at least four on the N chancel wall, while doorways on the S wall led to a sacristy and the cloister, of which nothing remains. Beneath the lancet windows on the inner face of the S nave wall there are six recesses (Wth 1.8m; H c. 1m; D 0.4m), one of which has a piece of painted decoration. An effigy (RO039-055004-), said to be that of Felimid O'Conor and made c. 1290-1300, is in the niche of a 15th wall monument (RO039-055003-) with eight warriors from its chest surviving in the N chancel wall (O'Gorman 1866; Taylor 1892-4a; FitzGerald 1892-4; FitzGerald 1900; Hunt 1974, 216-18, No. 213). A fragment with two panels from another tomb (RO039-055006-) is no longer present (Hunt, 1974, 1, 217, No. 214) and the 17th century memorial of John Hynde (RO039-055011-) recorded by FitzGerald at the W end of the church (1893, 357) is also missing. A limestone graveslab (RO039-055005-) (dims 1.25m x 0.91m) of John Verdon with the date 1656 is on the ground beside the O'Conor effigy. A sculpted stone (RO039-055009-) (Wth c. 0.44m; H c. 0.33m) with a carving of two entwined beasts is set in the coping around the O’Conor tomb (Siggins 1994), and the bases of two graveslabs (RO039-055007-; RO039-055008-) (Bradley and Dunne 1988, 104) have been re-identified recently by Garry Dempsey. One (L 0.8m; Wth 0.5m; T 0.16m) is outside the W wall of the N chancel and has a moulding on the edge and the incised double line of the stem of a cross is visible at the broken end. Another (L 0.48m; Wth 0.44m; T 0.29m) in the SE angle of the church has a moulded edge but no device on its upper surface can be detected. A fragment of what might be a graveslab is cut into a square piece (L c. 1.2m; Wth 0.32m; T 0.08-0.13m) and incorporated into the coping around the O’Conor tomb (RO039-055003-). It was recently identified by Brian Shanahan and recorded by Gary Dempsey. It has a raised band, probably from the stem of a cross, down the centre that bifurcates at one end. A raised image of what might be a cat with a small animal in its mouth overlies the stem. Archaeological testing (98E0438) c. 120m S of the abbey (FitzPatrick 2000a; Nelis 2000) and just to its W (01E1211) (Halpin 2003) failed to produce any related archaeological evidence. Further testing (04E1565) c. 100m to the NW had similar results (Byrne 2007). Test excavations (E004027) in 2009 in the garden c. 40m to the S on foot of a geophysical survey demonstrated that the features recorded were late 19th century or later in date (Henry 2009, 2012). The bottom part of a graveslab (L 0.8m; Wth 0.5m; T 0.16m) was noted by Bradley and Dunne(1988, 104) and recorded by Gary Dempsey outside the W wall of the N chancel of Roscommon abbey (RO039-055001-). It has a moulding on the edge and the incised double line of the stem of a cross is visible at the broken end. A small stone (Wth c. 0.44m; H c. 0.33m) with a carving of two entwined beasts is set in the coping around the O’Conor tomb (RO039-055003-) at Roscommon abbey (RO039-055001-). They are probably intended as deer as they appear to have antlers. A large fragment of what might be a graveslab is cut into a square piece (L c. 1.2m; Wth 0.32m; T 0.08-0.13m) and incorporated into the coping around the O’Conor tomb (RO039-055003-) at Roscommon abbey (RO039-055001-). It was first noted by Brian Shanahan and recorded by Gary Dempsey. The stone has a raised band, probably from the stem of a cross, down the centre that bifurcates at one end. A raised image of what might be a cat with a small animal in its mouth overlies the stem. The 17th century graveslab of John Hynde that was recorded by FitzGerald (1892-4, 357) as at the W end of the Dominican church (RO039-055001-) is now missing. It is described as: In the west end of the abbey is a large slab lying flat, with an inscription in relief; it commences nearly half way down the stone, and is very hard to decipher, being much worn: GODS WILL AND PLEASURE / IS OVR IOY ….URE / PRAY FOR THE SOULS OF IOHN / HYNDE AND …. MARTEN H / IS WIFE WHO CAVSED THIS TO . MB TO BE MADE ANN / 16 Below the inscription is a large skull and cross-bones with Memento More in relief below them and on either side an IHS and a wheel-like object. A collection of cut stones is incorporated into walls and garden features at a house just c. 70m SW of Roscommon Dominican abbey (RO039-055001-). They were first identified by Frank Scott and recorded by Scott and Gary Dempsey. Locally it is thought that some of the stones may have come from an earlier house at the location, but some certainly derived from the Dominican abbey. There are some hammer-dressed quoinstones, a roughly chamfered stone with crude stops (L of chamfer c. 0.8m), a rough-out for a doorstep (L c. 1.4m) that was never used probably because it fractured, a small fragment (H 0.2m) with a rebate probably for a window shutter and a chamfered segmental arch may be late in date. However, a jambstone with a door rebate and an outer chamfer set lengthways into a drystone wall, two chamfered stones built into a wall and a stone with a chamfer and an external shutter rebate, probably from a large window, may be from the abbey.
