Ballymageraghty, a territory of the Mageraghty chieftains, was leased from the Crown in 1577 by Sir Nicholas Malby, president of Connaught, and granted to him in 1579. He built a house here, described as a castle or stone fortalice with a watermill (RO039-061004-) in 1584 (Connellan 1962-3, 4) when it was tenanted by Thomas Ruttledge (Cronin 1980, 112). Situated on a rise on the S bank of a W-E section of the River Suck at a point where the river turns S c. 60m to the E. (Conboy 1988) Sections of two hexagonal towers (int. dim. c. 12m) survive, each consisting of one wall surviving complete to four storeys with a fireplace at each floor, and parts of the adjacent walls. The towers would have been c. 30m apart, projecting E from the main house, of which nothing survives. When Sir Charles Coote acquired the land in 1616 he built a second fortified house (RO039-061002-) just to the W. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010 - RO039-061002: House - fortified house, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO039-061002-. Sir Charles Coote built a fortified house just W of the site of Malby's fortified house (RO039-061001-) sometime after 1616. It is situated on a rise on the S bank of a W-E section of the River Suck at a point where the river turns S c. 60m to the E. By c. 1636 Coote had built a bridge (RO039-061003-) crossing the Suck, E of the house, and the house withstood three assaults in the 1640s (Conboy 1988). An ice-house (RO039-061-011-) was added probably in the late 17th or early 18th century. The house is a rectangular structure (dims c. 30m N-S; c. 9m E-W) of two storeys over a basement and three bays with projecting, slightly rhomboid towers (dims c. 6m x c. 6m) of three stories at the NE and SE angles. It was re-styled in the 18th century with additions, especially on the N side, and it is still occupied. A bawn (RO039-061010-) (dims c. 60m E-W; c. 40m N-S) surrounded the house, but nothing remains of it apart from the NE and SE towers which were part of Malby's house, mirrored by a featureless and poorly built hexagonal tower at the NW angle. The foundations of the SW tower, and the W wall (T c. 1.6m) of the bawn were uncovered c. 1960 (Connellan 1962-3). Sir Charles Coote built a fortified house (RO039-061002-) at the site of Malby's house (RO039-061001-) after 1616, and between then and c. 1636, the date of the Strafford map where it is marked (Simington 1949), a bridge was built from the house across the River Suck at a point where the W-E section of the river has turned S. It is also marked on Petty's map (1683) of Athlone North barony. The bridge would have been c. 60m long, and a section on the W bank (L 10.4m; Wth 5m; max. H 3.6m) with portions of the parapet and two broken arches (Wth c. 4m) survives. Archaeological testing (10E0293) for a new bridge just 5m to the N produced no related archaeological material, but evidence of the original bridge abutments on both sides of the river was recorded (McQuade 2010; 2013). However, further monitoring revealed no other archaeological or architectural features (Henry 2012). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 8 September 2012 - RO039-061004: Mill - unclassified, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO039-061004-. A watermill is listed in inquisitions of 1584 and 1611 (Connellan 1962-3, 4). A millrace departed from the River Suck just W of the point where the W-E section of the river turns S. It ran S (L c. 200m) at the base of the bluff on which the fortified houses (RO039-061001-; RO039-061002-) were built. It was widened in the 18th century and survives (Wth c. 5m) revetted with stone walls where it passes Castlecoote House (L c. 40m), but defined by an eathen bank (Wth 5m; H 1.5m) on the E side futher S. The mill would have been in Casltecoote village where the it was developed further in the 18th century and no evidence of an early structure survives. The widened millrace could have destroyed the most westerly arch of the bridge (RO039-061003-), and truncated the W side of the spherical chamber of the ice-house (RO039-0611-). In 1616 Sir Charles Coote was granted 'the castle, town and lands of Ballymacgeraghty. The 'town' probably refers to the townland. Although there was undoubtedly settlement around the castle and a watermill, it did not consititute a town or borough. Its location cannot be definitively identified but it was probably close to the fortified house the Malby had built (RO039-061001-). A 'castle or stone fortilace' is mentioned in inquisitions of 1584 and 1611 (Connellan 1962-3, 4). This is the fortified house built by Malby (RO039-061001-), and while there is no literary or physical evidence that a gatehouse was at this site it is very safe to presume that there was one on the wall of the bawn (RO039-061010-), probably on the S side. Sir Charles Coote built a fortified house (RO039-061002-) and bawn at the site of Malby's fortified house (RO039-061001-) after 1616. Situated on a rise on the S bank of the W-E River Suck at a point where the river turns S c. 60m to the E. The bawn (dims. c. 60m E-W; c. 40m N-S) surrounded the house, but nothing remains of it apart from the NE and SE towers which were part of Malby's house, mirrored by a featureless and poorly built hexagonal tower at the NW angle. The foundations of the SW tower and the W wall (T c. 1.6m) of the bawn were uncovered c. 1960 (Connellan 1962-3), and there is a well, recently conserved, ouside the NW angle of the bawn. Sir Charles Coote built a fortified house (RO039-061002-) at the site of Malby's fortified house (RO039-061001-) after 1616. By the time of the Strafford survey (1635-8) a bridge (RO039-061003-) crossing the Suck E of the house had been built since it is marked on the Strafford map of Athlone barony (Simington 1949). The ice-house was constructed probably in the late 17th or early 18th century on low-lying ground c. 10m S of the bridge. The base of a spherical chamber (int. diam. c. 4m) constructed of masonry (T 0.9m) survives with a vaulted rectangular chamber (int. dims 4.1m N-S; 2.8m E-W; present H 1.2m) on its S side which communicated with the ice-chamber by means of two hatches (Wth 0.5m; H 0.45m; L 1m). The mound has been removed, and the spherical chamber is truncated by the E side of the expanded mill-race (RO039-061004-). Visible as a circular feature on aerial photographs (ASIAP (291) 20-22), and situated on a knoll in an undulating landscape. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 22.8m NE-SW; 20.3m NW-SE) defined by a scarp (H 0.5m at SE to 1m at NW) SE-W-NE and berm (Wth 2-3m) S-W-N, with a slight fosse (Wth c. 4m; D 0.1m) NE-SE. There is no identifiable original entrance. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner.
