- RO024-022: Road - class 2 togher, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO024-022----. This site was initially recorded in the 2008 Archaeological Survey of Ireland Peatland Survey as a platform (Rohan 2009). It was located c. 170-200m from the edge of a bay at the NW end of Cloonshannagh Bog and visible in a drain face, 0.09m below the field surface. During the 2013 Re-Assessment Survey carried out by ADS it became apparent that this site and another nearby platform also recorded in 2008 formed a linear togher, orientated NW-SE, which was then recorded as CLS180a-d (Whitaker 2014). The togher was excavated in 2015 under licence 15E0203. The site was dated to cal. 2870-2495 BC. It was situated in Sphagnum pool peat. The excavated site was up to 3.5m in width, consisting of transverse roundwood and brushwood elements in very poor condition. It was supported by longitudinal roundwoods, interspersed with some lighter longitudinal brushwood and a loose scatter of brushwood. An organic layer consisting of twigs and woody detritus was found towards the E extent of the cutting. The trackway was secured by pegs. Some of them displayed toolmarked ends with concave facets (Coughlan & Whitaker 2019). This togher (L 15m; Wth 1.75-2.2m; T 0.2-0.8m) was located at the W edge of Cloondhannagh bog, in a narrow part (Wth c. 650m NW-SE) between Caul at NW and an island (diam. 300m) in Cloonshannagh to the SE. It ran E-W c. 40m S of and parallel to the togher (RO024-024----). The site was visible at two sightings located in a drain face and on the field surface. It varied slightly between the two sightings and was composed of longitudinally laid roundwood and brushwood with overlying brushwood transverses. The elements were sparsely laid 0-05 to 0.10m apart, and sometimes up to 0.58m apart. The roundwood and brushwood ranged from 0.05m to 0.10m and from 0.01m to 0.05m in diameter, respectively. This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. Excavations in 2010 (Rohan & Whitaker 2013) revealed that four sites previously identified as Platforms during the 2007/2008 Archaeological Survey of Ireland Peatland Survey (Rohan 2009) formed part of a linear togher. The other platform sites are RO024-048----, RO024-056---, and RO-024-057---, which have all been re-classified as Redundant records. The 2013 Re-assessment Survey (Whitaker 2014) recorded this site at thirteen sightings CLS115a-m (partial sightings of a-d remained after the 2010 excavations) and in 2014 sighting ‘d’ was excavated (Coughlan & Whitaker 2019). The trackway was excavated under licence 14E0265, and dated to cal. 358-59 BC. The primary substructure layer of the track consisted of a dense scatter of brushwood. There was no defined pattern to the deposit and it was 1-2 layers deep. The wood was generally in moderate to good condition. At the N side of the cutting a number of natural tree root systems had been incorporated into the structure. A series of possible brushwood pegs were recorded randomly scattered through the brushwood substructure layer. Overlying the brushwood substructure was a series of E-W orientated, longitudinally laid roundwoods and heavy brushwoods. The elements were not densely packed but survived in generally good condition. The superstructure was only noted in the west of the cutting adjacent to the drain face and it must be assumed that the remainder has been removed in antiquity. The roundwoods were tightly packed where they survived providing a substantial surface. One transversely laid oak timber had a worked end (Whitaker 2018). This togher was located towards the W edge of Cloonshannagh Bog, c. 100m from its W edge. It was orientated E-W and is situated 19m south of and parallel to a section of togher (RO024-024----). The site was visible at two sightings c. 20m apart. The W part (L 2.9m; Wth 2.2m; T 0.8m) is composed of longitudinally laid roundwood (diam. 0.06-0.08m) and has a small platform (dims. 1m x 1m) attached on the N side with roundwoods laid N-S. The E part (L 1.22m; Wth 1.64m; T 0.5m) consists of poorly preserved brushwood underlain by heavy brushwood longiditudinals (diam. 0.01-0.05m). This platform (Wth 4.85m; T 0.35m) was recorded 0.10m below the field surface. It was orientated NE-SW and was composed of moderately well preserved tightly packed longitudinally laid roundwood and brushwood underlain by a transversely laid roundwood at the N end of the site. The elements were densely laid 0.05 to 0.25m apart. The roundwood and brushwood ranged from 0.08 to 0.11m and from 0.025 to 0.035m in diameter, respectively. The underlying peat was composed of moderately humified Sphagnum-rich peat with moderate Eriophorum and occasional Calluna inclusions. This platform (Wth 5.46m; T 0.45m) was exposed in the drain face, 0.50m below the field surface. It was orientated NE-SW and was composed of moderately well preserved longitudinally laid roundwood and brushwood underlain by a small number of transversely laid roudwood elements. This sighting was less structured than the overlying (RO024-049----) with the elements laid 0.03 to 0.28m apart. The roundwood and brushwood ranged from 0.065 to 0.19m and from 0.03 to 0.05m in diameter, respectively. The elements did not form an obvious structure and the distance between the top and base of the site measured 0.6m with elements laid 0.10 to 0.20m apart. The roundwood and brushwood ranged from 0.04 to 0.14m and from 0.02 to 0.05m in diameter, respectively. The roundwood and brushwood ranged from 0.065 to 0.10m and from 0.015 to 0.03m in diameter, respectively. The underlying peat was composed of moderately humified Sphagnum-rich peat with occasional Calluna and Eriophorum inclusions. The elements were sparsely laid 0.02 to 0.42m apart and ranged from 0.06 to 0.10m in diameter. The underlying peat was composed of moderately humified Sphagnum-rich peat with moderate Calluna and Eriophorum inclusions. It produced a C14 date date of AD 1220-1270. The underlying peat was composed of moderately humified Sphagnum-rich peat with occasional Calluna and Eriophorum inclusions. This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog, within the cluster of sites to the E of Cloonshannagh dryland island. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a platform exposed in the drain face, 0.52m below the field surface. The wood was poorly preserved at the drain face as it was damaged by drain-cutting machinery. Its N extent extended below the water line of the drain (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2015 (licence 15E0192) and dated to cal. 1906-1698 BC (UBA-26566). The platform was truncated by a drain along its E extent and had a surviving area measuring 1.52m by 1.6m. It was WNW-ESE orientated, and was composed of roundwood and brushwood elements laid two to three deep. Two pegs were noted. The elements were wood species identified to alder, ash, birch, hazel, pomoideae, willow, and yew. Some evidence of woodworking was found in eight of the elements. This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was found located 0.11m below and to the S of the S extent of RO-CLS103/14E0260 and 0.72m below the current bog surface. Excavation in 2014 (licence 14E0260) revealed a platform composed of mainly heavy roundwoods with occasional brushwood and occasional plank fragments covering an area measuring 2.5 x 2.9m in size. The elements were species identified as alder, ash and oak and were mainly oriented NE–SW with occasional elements overlying and running underneath. They were in a moderate to good state of preservation and were densely laid a maximum of two to three deep. This site was dated to cal. 903-802 BC (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a platform with no discernible layers, visible in the drain face 0.43-0.95m below the bog surface (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 (licence 14E0262). It was dated to cal. 749–407 BC (UBA 26563). The excavation revealed a moderately dense arrangement of mainly E-W oriented brushwood and roundwood elements contained within an area measuring 1.6m x 3m. The elements were in poor condition. The underlying wood was composed of a sparse scatter of haphazardly arranged poorly preserved brushwood elements, contained with an area measuring 0.6m x 1.65m in size. Seven mainly upright brushwood pegs formed the basal layer of this site. A small wooden oak stave with an incised motif was recovered in the upper layer. Hazel was the preferred wood type selected for pegs, brushwood and worked ends followed by ash, alder, birch and willow (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a platform exposed in the drain face, 0.14m below the field surface, and visible in the opposing face(Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2015 (licence 15E0194). It was dated to 536–393 BC. The site was mainly composed of N-S orientated heavy roundwood and brushwood two to three layers deep, forming a 3m x 2.52m surface. The brushwood material to the E was composed of mainly hazel with lesser amounts of ash, birch, oak and pomoideae elements. A total of 72 tool-marked ends were noted. The facets were a mix of flat to slightly concave in shape. A large upright, squared oak post was located in the E part of the cutting amongst the brushwood material. Underlying the main site was a possible sub-structural layer, a deposit of three N-S oriented roundwoods and a heavy brushwood with some E-W oriented brushwood elements. This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a platform visible in the drain face 0.3m below the bog surface (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 (licence 14E0260). It was dated to 388-207 BC (UBA 26561). A layer of brushwood and heavy roundwood formed the uppermost surface of the site. It was composed of mainly NNE-SSW oriented elements that were contained within an area measuring 4m x 4m. The elements were in a moderate condition. A layer of peat separated the upper and second layers of wood. The second wood layer was composed of mainly NE-SW oriented brushwood, roundwood and two timber fragments contained within an area measuring 0.95-2.42m in width and a maximum of 8.4m in length. Many elements were irregularly shaped and branch like. Some possible coppiced heels were noted and sampled for further analysis. Several worked ends were noted. The third wood layer was composed of light and heavy brushwood that had been placed over and between the heavier roundwood basal elements of the site. The layer measured 7.8x2.2m, and was one to two elements deep. Several pieces had toolmarks and worked ends, while others showed signs of having been roughly torn branches. The basal layer of wood was composed of a densely packed roundwoods oriented mainly NE-SW with some brushwood packing and occasional split timber fragments. The wood was well preserved with bark present on several elements. It was contained within an area measuring 2.2-7.3m in size and was a maximum of 0.3m deep. A single peg was found. Hazel was the dominant taxa from the brushwood and roundwood wooden elements, while alder was selected for the pegs (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a platform visible in the drain face 0.21 to 0.77m below bog surface (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 (licence 14E0263). It was dated cal. 359-174 BC. Two isolated brushwood elements were uncovered 0.2m below the field surface, oriented NNE and NW-SE. They were overlying one another. There was a further c. 0.26m of peat between these elements and the site recorded as RO-CLS106. The excavated site was composed of a haphazard arrangement of thirteen brushwood and roundwood elements with no apparent form or construction contained within an area measuring 3.3 x 0.65m in size. The elements were hazel, ash, birch and oak. Seven of the elements had worked ends. This site appears to have been truncated by the Bord na Móna drain and may originally have formed part of a small platform (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as exposed in the drain face, 0.41m below the field surface and was visible in the opposing face. It was composed of a single layer of regularly laid brushwood elements that were in a moderate state of preservation (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2015 (licence 15E0193). It was dated to cal. AD 71–222. Two separate structures were found. The one concerned here was located at the W extent and visible in the drain face. This was composed of eight, closely placed, ENE oriented light brushwood elements, with a single underlying WNW oriented brushwood and some associated brushwood to the north. They covered an area measuring 1.7m by 1.8m in size. The wood species was dominated by birch with alder, hazel, ash and willow also present. The elements were roughly shaped with several forked branches and torn worked ends noted. Several toolmarks were noted which were mainly flat facets (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as exposed in the drain face, 0.41m below the field surface, and was visible in the opposing face. It was composed of a single layer of regularly laid brushwood elements that were in a moderate state of preservation (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2015 (licence 15E0193). Two separate structures were found. The one concerned here was located at the E extent and visible in the drain face. It contained a substantial structure composed of mainly N-S oriented roundwood elements two to three layers deep. The wood species was dominated by birch with alder, hazel, ash and willow also present. The elements were roughly shaped with several forked branches and torn worked ends noted. This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was excavated in a single cutting, under licence 15E0194. The site was dated to cal. AD 139-199 and AD 206-365. The site was composed of three E-W oriented hazel brushwood sails and the possible remains of a fourth sail to the south. N-S interwoven light brushwood hazel rods and associated pegs were found as well. They were a variety of hazel, birch, pomoideae and alder. The elements were in moderate to poor condition. Five chisel point toolmarks were recorded with flat facets. There were 12 supporting brushwood pegs found. All of the pegs had flat, single faceted, toolmarked ends (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as a hurdle panel exposed on the field surface (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 (licence 14E0264). It was dated to cal. AD 257–410. The excavated site consisted of at least three, and possibly four, hurdle panels laid transversely. The panels had been laid from the W, with each subsequent panel slightly overlying the previous one. The W panel was nearest to the drain edge and its W extent had been disturbed by milling. It was constructed with occasional double sails, and the weave was standard alternate under-over type. The second and central panel showed no evidence of double sails, although the weave was similar. The third panel was located in the E of the cutting and was similar in construction to the central panel. The wood species was identified as predominantly hazel, with very occasional ash, and a single piece of oak (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Peatland Reassessment Survey as a platform located on the field surface to the north of CLS016 between sightings CLS016c and CLS016d (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2014 under licence 14E0259, and was dated to cal. AD 902-1029. The remains consisted of a platform with a substructure and superstructure. The superstructure consisted of heavy brushwoods and roundwoods, all laid with an E-W orientation. They were tightly packed in roughly two layers. The condition of the elements was moderate to good. The brushwood substructure was formed by up to 2 layers that appeared to be randomly laid with no clear orientation, and moderate density. The elements were generally in good condition. The brushwood consisted of birch, hazel, ash and alder while alder and pomoideae were identified from the roundwood samples (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019). This platform was a hurdle panel (L c. 2m; Wth 1m) and was visible on the field surface, 20m N of the togher (RO030-024----), towards its NW end. It was orientated NE-SW and was truncated by a drain on its S side. It was composed entirely of poor to moderately preserved light brushwood that included six sails interwoven with tightly packed rods that were up to 0.01m apart. The elements ranged from 0.015 to 0.04m in diameter. The underlying peat was composed of poorly humified Sphagnum-rich peat with moderate Calluna and Eriophorum inclusions. Located c. 50m NE of (RO030-025----), it was visible in a drain face, 0.20m below the surface of the bog. It was composed of an upper layer of moderately well preserved regularly laid transverse brushwood elements (Wth 2.6m; T 0.1m) underlain by longitudinal brushwood. The basal layer of the platform was composed of twigs. The elements were densely laid up to 0.18m apart and ranged from 0.015 to 0.04m in diameter. This site was located in the industrial peatlands of Cloonshannagh Bog. It was first recorded in the 2013 Reassessment Peatland Survey as exposed in section in an E-facing drain face 0.22m below the field surface, and composed of roundwood and brushwood elements two to three layers deep (Whitaker 2014). The site was excavated in 2015 (licence 15E0204) and dated to cal. 1433-1264 BC. The excavated site measured 2.32m by 2.5m, and consisted of 11 NW-SE orientated roundwoods, truncated by the drain, and overlying lighter E-W orientated brushwood elements. A large birch root bowl was located along the S extent of the site. Many of the elements were machine damaged and in relatively poor condition. The brushwood was species identified as alder, oak, birch and pomoideae. Four toolmarked ends were noted. It is not certain if this site was a platform or a trackway (Coughlan and Whitaker 2019).
