Marked as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated just off the crest of a slight N-S ridge at the S end. Circular grass-covered area with some bushes (diam. 32m NE-WSW; 29m NNW-SSE) defined by an eroded earthen bank (Wth 4.7-5.5m; int. H 0.1m generally to 0.5m at N (upslope); ext. H 0.1m generally to 0.5m at S), which is overlain by a field wall SSW-NW. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. This is a castle of the Keoghs, probably dating from the 15th century, through Tadhg, son of Nicol Óg, grandson of Diarmuid Mór O'Kelly (O'Donovan 1843, 125-6). However, by 1585 Cloonbigny was owned by John Moore, a government official from Athlone, but its possessions may have been as extensive as the later estate of the Moores’ (Moore 1974-5; 1978, 61). It was owned by William Moore in 1640 and Col. Garrett Moore in the 1660s (Simington 1949, 105). It is situated on a slight rise in a low-lying landscape with lower ground to the E and S. The S corner of a tower house survives with a base-batter and copious cairn material, whose SE wall is abutted by the NW wall of the fortified house (RO050-019002-). The entrance was on the SE wall with a vaulted guard room to the NE and the destroyed newel stairs was in the S angle. The tower house is at the S angle of a bawn (RO050-019003-) (int. dims c. 31m NE-SW; c. 28m NW-SE) defined by wall foundations (Wth 0.9m) and a stone spread (Wth c. 2m; H 0.3m). A cairn (diam. 5m; max. H 1m) at the N angle is the remains of a circular mural tower (RO050-019004-), and there are the foundation of a gateway (RO050-019005-) (Wth of passage 3m; L 9m) straddling the centre of the NW wall. There are the foundations of a building (RO050-019006-) (int. dims c. 8m x c. 6m) against the inside of the NE bawn wall and of a building (RO050-019007-) (int. dims c. 10m x c. 4m) against the inside of the SW bawn wall. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010 - RO050-019002: House - 16th/17th century, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO050-019002-. On a slight rise in a low-lying landscape with lower ground to the E and S. The Keogh property of Cloonbigney had been acquired by John Moore, an English official from Athlone, by 1585 (Moore 1978, 61), and he may have built the house against the remains of the Keogh tower house (RO050-019001-). A structure at Clonbingney is marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 (Simington 1949, Athlone), and 105 acres there together with the castle were owned by William Moore in 1641. William owned over 2000 acres in Taughmaconnell parish, but about 1350 acres were described as wood or bog. The land was largely in Cloonbigny, Carrowreagh, Carrownure and Clomadrone (Cloonaddron), and in the 1660s was mostly owned by Colonel Garrett Moore, as was the property in Cloonbigny (ibid. 105-06). The Moores were no longer among the principal families in the parish by the 19th century (Lewis 1837, 2, 585-6). This is a four bay, two storey and attic house (ext. dims 17.4m NE-SW; 7.1m NW-SE) and survives complete with good quoins, except much of the NW wall which probably contained the entrance. There are fireplaces in the NE and SW gable walls at both floors with an oven in the SW wall at ground floor, and there are three diamond-shaped chimney stacks rising from each gable. There are the remains of dormer windows in the SE wall. The house abuts the SE wall of tower house (RO050-019001-), whose newel stairs it used to access the first floor. It may have been constructed from the stones of the tower house and utilised the bawn also. A structure (int. dims 15.15m NE-SW; 9.5m NW-SW) NE of the house and outside the SE wall of the original bawn is later than both, but it has an entrance (Wth 1.15m) into the bawn where it abuts the house. (Craig 1982, fig. 94) See the attached images taken from the S, SE and inside the NE gable.
