On a shelf of a gentle N-facing slope and on the W side of the Castlerea to Frenchpark road (R361), c. 1km from the centre of Castlerea. It is known as the Showgrounds or Hough's Field, but there is no record of races held here. Subrectangular grass-covered area (ext. dims. c. 185m WNW-ESE; c. 75m NNE-SSW) with curved shorter sides defined by a sunken track (Wth of base 3-6m; D 0.2-0.7m). There is an earthen bank (Wth 7m; H 0.8-1m) forming the outside curve at its E end. The field is defined by drystone walls, but there is a masonry wall and a gateway (Wth 3.6m) defined by two piers (dims. 0.9m x 0.9m; H c. 2m) with string courses at the top on the E side. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 37.7m E-W; 32m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.4-3.8m; int. H 0.2-0.6m; ext. H 1-1.4m) NW-E-WSW and a scarp (H 1.2m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. A raised rectangular platform (dims 10m x 10m; H 0.1m at S to 1.5m at E) just SW of the centre is a golfing tee and a bunker (Wth 4m) has been dug inside the perimeter at E. At the crest of the W end of a low E-W ridge. A castle known as Caislean Riabac of the clann Fogarthaigh was captured with ordnance in 1499 by Garret Mór FitzGerald, Earl of Kildare (Kerrigan 1984, 200; AFM vol. 4, 1251). It was captured again by his son, Garreth Óg, the ninth Earl, in 1526 at the behest of O Conor Rua (ALC, 2, 257), but it was captured and destroyed by O'Donnell in 1527 (ibid. 261). However, O'Conor Rua and Mac Diarmada besieged it for 6 weeks later in the year with a siege engine but failed to capture it (ibid. 263-5). The land was granted to Capt. Theopholis Sandford in the 1650s which became the core the Sandford estate. The castle was known as Caislean Riabhach, meaning speckled, and was attached to Castlereagh House (Weld 1832, 467; Timoney 1990, 15; 1993, 20; Rochford 1994), but nothing remains even of the House which was taken down in the 1960s. This was the Church of Ireland parish church of Castlerea from 1703 to 1819 when Trinity Church, now a heritage centre, was built c. 200m to the S (Trohy 1994; Wall 1994). It is situated on the S bank of the ESE-WNW Francis River in Castlerea town. It is a nave and chancel church with N and S transepts. The nave (int. dims c. 10m E-W; 6.1m N-S), whose W wall and adjacent parts of the N and S walls do not survive has a single window embrasure in the long walls (H 3.4m). The chancel (int. dims 5.4m E-W; 2.9m N-S) has a round-headed window (Wth 1.18m; H 3m) with flanking lights (Wth 0.54m; H 2.05m) in the E wall and a robbed doorway at the E end of the N wall. The N and S transepts (int. dims 2.4m N-S at W to 4m N-S at E; 8.6m E-W) hardly survive and are featureless. The church is within a subrectangular graveyard (RO026-035002-) (dims 58m E-W; 45m N-S at W to 55m N-S at E) defined by masonry walls, and contains 19th and 20th century graves. Archaeological testing (03E1798) on the roadway E of the graveyard failed to produce any burials or related material (Fitzpatrick 2004, 13; 2006b). Date plaque to north wall reading, "Patrick Egan Contractor 1880." Rock-faced retaining wall to road to south side of bridge. Random coursed retaining wall to east side of river surmounted by wrought-iron railings to north.

Enclosed Church of Ireland graveyard, established c.1700, with random coursed sandstone and limestone boundary wall with buttresses to interior. Rendered stone gate piers with cast-iron gates. Section to east bounded by cast-iron railings. Various upright and recumbent grave markers. Shell of Holy Trinity Church with venetian window to east gable in graveyard.
