Marked as a D-shaped embanked enclosure (ext. dims c. 40m N-S; c. 35m E-W) truncated by a N-S field bank at E on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a rise in an undulating landscape. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (diam. 26m E-W; c. 20m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (at W: Wth 7.2m; int. H 0.9m; ext. H 1.5m) E-S-W separated by a fosse (at S: Wth of top 6.4m; Wth of base 2.4m; D 0.7m) from an outer bank (Wth 3.5m; H 0.5m), which only survives SW-W. The original entrance is not identified. The N part of the monument is destroyed by ancient quarrying and is now overgrown. Located in the NW quadrant of ringwork (RO051-047002-). It may have been built by McKeoghs since land here were held by Shane McKeogh (died 1618) and in 1638 by Edmund Mc Colla McKeogh of Ardmullan (Moore 1978, 60). In 1641 Edmund Mc Colla held 150 acres at Dundonnel, most of it unprofitable, together with 64 acres at Shean, but the Dundonnel property and most of the Shean land was owned by Sir Thomas Newcommen by the 1660s (Simington 1949, 104-05). The house is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 13.9m WNW-ESE; 8.15m NNE-SSW) of three bays and two storeys with an attic surviving complete, except for much of the N wall and the quoinstones. The entrance was on the N wall and there is evidence of four destroyed lights on the ground floor and four gun-loops at the angles. The ground floor has a destroyed fireplace in the E gable but there is no evidence of a stairs. The first floor has destroyed fireplaces in the E and W gables and three windows in the S wall. The attic has two gun-loops in the E gable and a fireplace in the W (Curley 2011, 56). There are two diamond-shaped chimney-stacks on each gable and corbels from a machicolation over the NE angle. (Curley 2016, 60-1) See the attached image taken from the S. Situated at the S end of a low NNW-SSE ridge in a low-lying landscape. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 48m NW-SE; 41m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 6-7.7m; int. H 0.6-0.8m; ext. H 3.2-3.8m) with traces of external facing-stones separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 9.8-11m; Wth of base 2-3m; D 1.8-2m) from an outer overgrown bank (Wth of base 6-6.2m; Wth of top 1m; H 0.8m) which is incorporated into a road bank NE-SE. The entrance (Wth 3.3m) and causeway (Wth 3m) are at NNE (max. ext. diam. 73m NW-SE). The late 16th or early 17th century house (RO051-047001-) is in the interior. It has been interpreted as a possible ringwork castle (Graham 1988, 28-9; Sweetman 1999, 197), and has been identified as the castle of Onagh that was built in 1236 and destroyed by Áedh O'Conor in 1270 (Curley 2011, 40-1; 2016). It has also been interpreted as a rath that was re-fortified when the house (RO051-047001-) was built (O'Conor 2007, 191-2).
