Depicted as a circular feature (diam. c. 30m) only on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and described as a platform (diam. c. 32m) defined by a fosse (Gannon 1972). The mound has been levelled in the restoration of the windmill (RO016-102002-). Built by Edward Synge, Church of Ireland Bishop of Elphin, c. 1750 (Rynne 2006, 25). Described as in ruins on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a level landscape. A restored tower mill (int. diam. c. 4m; H c. 8m) of three storeys, with lintelled doorways (Wth 1.15m) at E and W. It is lit by small rectangular windows at the first and second floors and has a thatched roof, sails and a rotating cap. It stood on a mound (RO016-102001-) (diam. 32m E-W) defined by a fosse (Gannon 1972), but the mound is no longer visible. On a broad ridge at the N edge of Elphin town, and c. 550m N of the cathedral (RO016-127001-). The palace of the Bishop of Elphin, Tomaltach O'Conor who had just been elected Archbishiop of Tuam, was destroyed in 1258 by Hugh O'Conor, along with the bishop's other palace at Kilteasheen (RO006-013002-) (AFM vol. 3, 365). Its site is unknown. After the supression of the Franciscans at St Patrick's church (RO016-148001-) in 1563 that site was chosen by Bishop King for a palace (RO016-128001-) in the 1620s that became known as the castle. Bishop Hudson provided funds for a Grammar school and the Cathedral in his will in 1685, and this provided capital for a new palace built on the prsent site, but it was not constructed until the 1750s by bishop Edward Synge. This palace consisted of a three-storey central block with two two-storey pavilions attached by plain curved sweeps to the NE and SE. The main block was demolished in 1912, but each side pavilion is a two-storey four bay E front by a three bay side. Archaeological testing c. 50m to the SE of the Palace failed to recover any associated material (Carey 2004a), and archaeological testing during 2008 on the central block uncovered part of the W wall (Wth 1.1m) in an area that was covered with stone and brick debris (Read 2008e; 2011c). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 2nd February 2011 - RO016-127001: Cathedral, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO016-127001-. Ono, a Druid and one of two brothers who owned this territory sought gold from St. Patrick for the site of a a church. For this offence the saint said that none of the Cinel Mac Earca would rule the Connachta but would always be allies of their kings. A contrite Ono offered his own fort to the saint who brought forth a spring at Ail Fin which means the fair spring of the stone (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 2, 2-5; Bieler 1979). Another derivation of the name, using Welsh sources, suggests that St Brendan may have been the founder and it means ‘the rock of the fair one’ (Beggan 2016). Elphin supplanted Roscommon (RO039-043006-) as the diocesan centre by c.1170, probably because of the strength and reputation of St Patrick's abbey (RO016-148001-), but a separate cathedral of St Mary had been built by the early 13th century and is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin diocese in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223). There were eight bishops named O'Conor before 1343, one of whom, Tomaltach, became Archbishop of Armagh in 1180. After a disputed election in 1244, the elections came more under the direction of the King and the Pope. Roland de Burgo, appointed in the 1540s, was the first Protestant bishop and Elphin continued as the diocesan centre until 1961. (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 75-7) The church was damaged in 1641, and a new cathedral was erected on the original foundations in 1757-8. This was rebuilt in 1823, while the apse was added in 1872. The church was largely demolished in 1964, and the remains conserved in 1982 (Gibley 1988). Situated at the crest of a S-facing slope, at the S end of a rectangular graveyard (RO016-127007-) (int. dims 60m E-W; 38m N-S) defined by masonry walls and containing 18th - 20th century headstones. The remains consist of a rectangular structure (int. dims 21.45m E-W; 7.63m N-S) defined by conserved walls (H 2m; T 0.95m). The base of the rectangular tower (int. dims 2.5m E-W; 2.35m N-S; H c. 3m) is at the W end, and a chapter room (int. dims 6m N-S; 4.85m E-W) with featureless masonry walls (H 1.4m; T 0.6m) was added at the W end of the S wall. The apse (int. dims 6.45m N-S; 5.35m E-W) at the E end of the nave has 5 round-headed windows, but the base of its piers, and the step separating it from the nave, are of dundry. Two (RO016-127003-; RO016-127004-) of at least four 17th century grave-slabs (Weld 1832, 356-2; Burke 1895, 102-5, 111-7), including that of Bishop Edward King, are within the church. There is a record of a 'font stone' (RO016-127006-) which it was commonly believed held the imprint of St Patrick's knee. This relic, which may have been a bullaun stone, was destroyed by rebels in 1641 (Burke 1895, 112). St Patrick's Well (RO016-127008-) is c. just N of the graveyard. This was enclosed in a masonry pier (dims 0.8m x 0.8m; H 0.8m) in the 19th century. It was re-established in 1984, enclosed in its pier, and provided with a patio, at which time a large stone (RO016-127009-) was erected nearby to commemorate the original foundation (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 2, 2-4). St Patrick's abbey (RO016-148001-) is probably c. 550m to the N on the site of the post-medieval bishop's palace (RO016-126----). A test excavation (00E0171) c. 50m W of the graveyard failed to yield any evidence associated with the church or settlement (Halpin 2002), but a test excavation (00E0579) produced a paved area (dims 1.5m N-S; 0.8m E-W) outside the N wall of the church (Carey 2002). Test excavations (01E0704) c. 100m S of the church produced a stone-lined 18th century kiln (RO016-127010-) (dims 2.3m E-W; 1.4-1.6m N-S; D 0.6m), which was probably for corn-drying (Read 2003d, 355; 2006n). It was abandoned by bishop Tilson in 1645 (Weld 1832, 361), and was occupied by Franciscans 1650-54 (Giblin 1988). Funds for a Grammar School and the Cathedral (RO016-127001-) were provided in 1685 in the will of Bishop John Hudson, and these were partly used to provide a new palace but the site was moved to the present Bishop's palace (RO016-126----) (ibid. 362) when it was begun in the 1750s by Bishop Smyth. Situated on a slight ridge, c. 200m E of the Cathedral (RO016-127001-), its site was identified by J. O'Donovan in a field known as the Castle Garden in the 1830s (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 2, 19). Nothing is visible at ground level in pasture. Traditionally, a church was established by St Patrick at a well beside a rock (Bieler 1978, 95-7), hence the name Ail Fionn or Elphin meaning 'the sweet well by the rock'. The names of the first two bishops, Assicus and Bite, are known, but nothing else is recorded until the Augustinian rule was introduced to St Patrick's in the early 12th century. St Patrick's continued separate from St Mary's Cathedral (RO016-127001-) and is listed in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223). However, by 1442 the community was extinct and the church had been transferred to the Franciscans (Gibley 1988), although some sources describe them as Dominican (Nicholls 1972-3, 37). St Patrick's was suppressed in 1563 and it was described as a church, cloister and dormitory in 1591, (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 175, 249). A palace (RO016-128001-) for the Church of Ireland bishop was built from its materials which became known as the castle, the location of which was identified by J. O'Donovan in 1837 as the castle field, which is also the site of St. Patrick's (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 2, 5). The Franciscans continued in the Elphin area, even holding a chapter here in 1672, but by the late 18th century they had disappeared from the area (Gibley 1988, 27). No trace of the church is extant and its exact location is not known. There is no visible entrance, but an ice-house (RO016-157002-), consisting of a spherical brick chamber (int. diam. 2.6m) with an entrance passage (int. dims 3.3m NNE-SSW; 1.15m WNW-ESE) to the NE and the remains of its mound (diam. 15m; H 0.7-1m) occupies the NE quadrant.
