Recorded as a Dominican cell in 1586 (Nicholls 1972-3, 38). Fr. Augustine Plunkett built a refuge and hospice here after the dispersal of an Augustinian house at Ballyhaunis in the 1700s, which would undoubtedly have served as a Roman Catholic church. Situated on a low hillock in an undulating landscape. Rectangular structure (ext. dims 16.8m E-W; 7.8m N-S) with restored and conserved walls (T 0.9m; H 1.8-2m). There is a doorway (Wth 1.2m) towards the W end of the S wall, and the head of a cusped ogee-headed window (RO021-064004-) is built into the outer face of the N wall. A mortuary chapel to the W was built in 1865 for the Irwins of Rathmoyle, and conserved in the 1990s (Mannion 1998). They are within a rectangular graveyard (RO021-064002-) (dims c. 70m E-W; c. 60m N-S) defined by masonry walls. Enclosure (RO021-063005-) and barrow (RO021-063006-) are c. 70m and 140m to the NE and enclosure (RO012-063003-) is c. 150m to the NW. Marked only on the 1929 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a tree-ring, and situated a the W end of a low WNW-ESE ridge. D-shaped grass-covered platform (dims 30.7m N-S; 25m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 0.3m E-S to 1.1m at N) separated by a berm (Wth 3m at S to 7m at N) from an earthen bank (Wth 2.5-3.5m; int. H 0.2-0.7m; ext. H 0.8-1m) and outer fosse (Wth of base 1.5-1.7m; D 0.2-0.7m). There is no visible entrance, but a N-S trench (Wth 9m; D 1m) has been dug between the platform and bank at W, creating the straight edge of the platform (L 24m), and the interior is planted with mature deciduous trees (max. ext. diam. c. 52m N-S). Archaeological testing (03E0892) immediately to the NE during 2003 failed to produce any related material (Read 2006c). There are ramp entrances at E (Wth 1.6m) and WSW (Wth1.7m). Detached gabled mortuary chapel, built in 1865 in memory of Mary Irwin. Chapel entrance flanked by pedestrian entrance gates and with canted apse to east. Pitched slate roof, hipped to apse with limestone coping to gabled front elevation with stone cross to apex. Cut limestone walls with tooled limestone dressings. Paired lancet window and roundrel with hoodmoulding to front gabled elevation, bull's eye windows to side elevations. Pointed-arched door opening with chamfered limestone surround and timber battened door. Latin inscription to door surround with entrance accessed by limestone steps. Plaque to rear wall, obelisk, additional graves and a carved stone cross from the ruined church to rear of this site.
