At the summit of Kiltullagh Hill with a modern quarry c. 30m to the S in Co. Mayo where human remains dating to 3rd to 6th century AD were found in 1991 (Cribin et al. 1994). This is a rectangular stone (dims 0.7m x 0.2m; H 1.2m) aligned ENE-WSW with three holes (dims 0.04-0.06m; D 0.04-0.05m) in its W edge. Excavation (94E0030) around its base (McCormick 1994) revealed a fourth hole on its W edge together with a male inhumation and pieces of a cremation burial (RO032-001004-). Further excavation (96E0179) recovered more inhumations and a cremation were found in the vicinity (Robinson and Coombs 2000, 179). Ring-barrow (RO032-001002-) is c. 5m to the NE, but a second ring-barrow (RO032-001003-) (Knox 1914a, 45-6, Ring No. 1), whose position is uncertain lay to the W, and is probably in Co. Mayo. On the summit of Kiltullagh Hill, just 5m NE of standing stone (RO032-001001-). Subcircular grass-covered area (int. dims 2.9m N-S; 2.3m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 2.8-3.7m; int. H 0.1m at N to 0.4m at W; ext. H 0.2m generally to 0.5m at N) with some inner facing-stones, which is quarried at E. Excavation (96E0179) revealed an outer fosse (max. ext. diam. 11m) with a cremation while the central pit was disturbed by robbing, but the mound had contained inhumations (RO031-001004-) (Coombs and Maude 1997). There was a second barrow (RO032-001003-) described by Knox (1914a, 45-6, Ring 2), whose location is uncertain but which lay to the W and might have been in Co. Mayo. Around the base of the standing stone (RO032-001001-) at the summit of Kiltullagh Hill. The inhumation of a male was excavated (94E0030) in 1994, and in 1998 two adults and a child were recovered. All the burials were aligned E-W and their pits were lined with stones. They are probably Christian. Ring-barrow (RO032-00102-) is nearby. The parish church of Kiltullagh is listed as Keltullagh in the ecclesiastical taxation of Tuam diocese in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 228) and is unlikely ever to have been a Franciscan friary (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 279). It is situated at the crest of a severe SE-facing slope of Kiltullagh Hill overlooking a valley to the E and S, and with higher ground to the NW. The church is a rectangular structure (int. dims 16.5m ENE-WSW; 6.5m NNW-SSE) of which only the E and S (H 3.2m) walls survive complete together with the foundations of the other walls (T 0.9m). A pointed doorway (Wth 1.38m; H 2.3m) with a hanging eye on the W side is situated towards the W end of the S wall, while a rectangular light is towards its E end. A round-headed window (Wth 0.18m; H 1.08m) is not centrally placed in the E gable which has an aumbry at its S side. The church is within a rectangular graveyard (RO032-002002-) (dims 58m NE-SW; 38m NW-SE) defined by masonry walls. John O'Donovan writing c. 1837 recorded two round stones (RO032-002005-; RO032-002006-) on the graves of priests (O'Flanagan 1931 vol. 1, 65) but these are no longer present. The W angle of the graveyard overlies a raised platform partly outside the graveyard, which on excavation (00E0322) revealed the walls (T 1.2m; H 1-1.5m) of a building (RO032-002007-) (ext. dims 18m E-W; 7.5m N-S) which may have been an earlier church (Gregory 2002). H 0.5m) defining a number of small enclosures (dims c. 20m x c . 20m). South of the graveyard is a rectangular area (dims 17m x 4m) attatched to the W of an oval area (dims 24m x 20m), both overlain by lazy beds, while to the N and E of the graveyard there are a number of short earthen banks.
