Towards the top of the NW-facing slope of a drumlin. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 26.5-27m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 0.5m) at WSW and scarp (H 0.2m generally to 0.9m at N) elsewhere, with an outer fosse represented by a band of rushes (Wth 3m) SE-SW. There is no visible entrance. It remains unplanted in a coniferous forest (OSI images 2005). The monument was damaged early in 2020 through the digging of two NE-SW forestry drains through the interior, but in so far as possible the damage was rectified through a full survey and the re-instatement of the ground under archaeological supervision (20E0280). No artefacts were recovered, but a portion of the bank survives at NW where it was visible in section as a brown silty clay with small stones (Wth c. 2m; H 0.4m) at the inner edge of the dark brown silty clay of the fosse, which had not been penetrated (excavations.ie 2020:123). Described as an 'old deserted canal' accompanied by a laneway or towpath (RO007-011002-) on an undated Longfield map in NLI (ms. 21. F. 44 (40)), it is not marked on any ed. of the OS 6-inch map, although its line is indicated on the 1837 ed. Situated on the floodplain of the River Shannon, avoiding or by-passing shallows on that river. The canal (original L c. 2km) ran from just below Battle Bridge to a point just above Inishnagon island, Co. Leitrim, and it was replaced by the present Lough Allen canal on the Leitrim side in the 1850s. The canal was c. 100-200m from the river and has largely been filled in, but an extensive grass and reed-covered section (L c. 700m; Wth 8-11m; D 0.2-0.9m) survives at its N end. There is no clear evidence of the towpath. This is probably the work begun by Col. Charles Tarrant after 1787 but never completed.
