The town wall of Rindown (L c. 500m) crosses the peninsula NE-SW just where it emerges from the mainland, and forms the townland boundary between Warren with the town of Rindown to its SE and Rinnagan to the NW. It was probably built after 1251 when funds were granted for the enclosure of Rindown. It has a gateway and three mural towers. The wall survives in good condition (H c. 3m) with an outer base-batter, evidence of a wall-walk and a levelling-up line (H c. 1-1.5m over ground level). A programme of conservation began in 2008, beginning with the most southerly tower. (Bradley and Dunne 1988a, 68-70) At the NE end a short section (L 4.5m; H 2.25m) extends into the lake 20m from the shore where the intact wall (L 56m; max. H 3.15m) extends to the first mural tower. The wall has an outer base-batter (H 0.8m) and a levelling course (H 1.65-2.1m) but no evidence of a wall-walk (max. int. H 2.8m). The first tower is rectangular (int. dims 3m x 3m) projecting NW from the town wall which forms its SE side and has a base-batter and some surviving quoins. The ground floor is featureless, but at the first floor the SE side is open and the floor was supported on joists set in the NE and SW walls. This floor has lights in each of the three walls. The town wall continues (L 80m; ext. H 0.9-2.9m) to the second mural tower with an external base-batter (H 0.75m) and a levelling course (H 1.4m), but this section of wall is in poor condition. The rectangular tower (int. dims c. 3m x 3m) projects NW from the town wall which forms its SE side at its featureless ground floor, but at the first floor its SE side is open, the floor was supported on joists set in the NE and SW walls and there are lights in the three projecting walls. A rebate for a second floor survives at the top of the walls and there is an external base-batter and dressed quoins. The town wall continues (L 86m; H c. 3m) to the gatehouse with an external base-batter (H 1.2-1.7m), a levelling course (int. H 1-1.4m), and traces of a wall-walk (H 2.33-2.45m). The gatehouse is rectangular (ext. dims c. 7.5m NW-SE; c. 7m NE-SW) but is in very poor condition. A fragment of a portcullis niche survives on the SW pier, but the structure is otherwise featureless. The town wall continues (L 91m; ext. H 3.7-4m) to the third mural tower with some large gaps. It has an external base-batter and a levelling course, and evidnece of a wall-walk. The third rectangular tower (int. dims c. 3m NE-SW; c. 4.5m NW-SE) projects NW from the town wall, but it is open-backed at the ground floor which is featureless. The first floor was supported on joists set into the NE and SW walls and each wall has a light. There is a rebate for a second floor on the NW wall and joists were set into the NE and SW walls. The tower has a base-batter and quoins. The town wall continues (L 104m) to the SW shore, decreasing in height (H 2.2-1.15m) with many gaps, and it is continued by a drystone wall into the lake. Conservation work has been continuing on the town wall since 2009, and most of the wall has now been stabilised (Collins 2013). See the attached images of the gatehouse from N (003) and NW (007) and of the S mural tower from N (009) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of amended upload: 30 July 2015 - RO046-004005: Religious house - Fratres Cruciferi, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO046-004005-. Situated c. 200m outside the town wall of Rindown. Possibly founded by King John and Philip de Angelo c. 1215 as the Church of St. John the Baptist at Tea-eon, as a house of Crutched Friars. References date positively from 1372 when the poet and historian Sean O Dubagain was buried here. It was suppressed and granted to Christopher Davers in 1569 and leased to George Goodman in 1588. In 1596 it was described as a church roofed in shingles, a cloister, and three decayed houses. A belfry is mentioned in 1605-06. (Bradley and Dunne 1988a, 76-7; Gwynne and Hadcock 1988, 215-6) Only the church oriented N-S, which may be the S transept of a larger church, survives almost complete as a rectangular building (int. dims 11.05m N-S; 5.9m E-W) with dressed quoins, those at the NW and NE angles with chamfers. The E wall is featureless, while the S wall has one robbed window in a round-headed embrasure and the W wall has two destroyed windows which have diagonal tooling on their dressed ingoings. The church was entered through a flat-arched opening (Wth 1.8m; H 2.2m) in the N wall. This was approached from the N by a passage through a later structure (RO046-004028-) (ext. dims 7.3m E-W; 4m N-S) to its N which may have been a tower. Only the base survives, but it has a mural stairs in the E wall. A post-Suppression phase of use is suggested for the church by the partial blocking of the S window over a robbed brick-lined window, but this would have been ended by the late 18th century when table tombs dating from 1779 were installed in the interior. The church was conserved in 2009 (Collins 2013, 28). Jus S of the church is a building (int. dims 8.3m plus E-W; 2.9m N-S) defined by masonry walls (max. H 0.7m) with good quoins which is truncated by the graveyard wall at W. This (RO046-004038-) could represent part of the cloistral surrounds, and a raised grass-covered and flat-topped but stony mound (Wth of top 4m; Wth of base 7m; H 0.3-0.6m) extends eastwards from it (L c. 27m), with a gap (Wth at base 2.8m) just 4-6m E of the visible building. At its E end the mound turns NNE as a broad but still flat-topped stony mound (Wth of top 8m; Wth of base 12m; H 0.1-0.4m). The cloister may have been contained between these structures and the church, although there is no evidence of a lean-to structure against the E wall of the church. The church is within a D-shaped graveyard (RO046-004029-) (dims 43m NE-SW; 35m NW-SE) defined by masonry walls, which partly fell in December 2010, revealing a stone head. This will be replaced on the outer face of the reconstructed wall. Within the graveyard is a 16th century graveslab (RO046-004037-) (dims 1.67m x 0.76m) with a raised roman inscription commemorating John Clysk who died in 1539 (Collins 2012, 3-4) and some architectural fragments (RO046-004030-) including part of a cloister arcade. The graveyard (RO046-004023-) is immediately to the NE and the walled garden (RO046-004026-) is c. 30m to the N, while the possible fish-pond (RO046-004039-) is c. 30m to the NW. Within the graveyard is a graveslab (dims 1.67m x 0.76m) which was discovered in 2007 by Richard Collins (2012, 3-4) who thought it had a sixteenth century date. More recent work by the St John’s Heritage Group reveals that the inscription in false relief is in roman lettering and commemorates John Clusk who died in the early eighteenth century. Research work by the group reveals that John Clusk of Carrowphadeen signed a lease in 1725 and his widow Margaret is listed in the Elphin Diocesan Census of 1749. The inscription with its contractions reads: I WAS D / THIS MONUM ERECT BY / MARGAT CLVSK OVER Ye / BODY OF HER HVSBAND IO _ _ / CLVSK WHO DEPT THIS LI / FE IN _ 53 YEAR OF HIS AGE ON / _ _ DAY OF _ _ _ Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 11 April 2011 Amended: 2 December 2020 - RO046-004038: Building, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO046-004038-.
