Marked on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a small rectangular structure (dims c. 10m N-S; c. 5m E-W) where it is described in gothic lettering as 'Tonvee Castle', and described as the stie of a castle on the 1925 ed. It is not marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 or known from any other source (Simington 1949, Moycarn). It was described c. 1910 as heaps of stones (OS Name Books). Situated on a low-lying level landscape with a small NW-SE stream c. 10m to the SW, it is not visible at ground level in pasture. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010 - RO054-050: Souterrain, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO054-050----. Marked only on the 1915 ed. of the OS 25-inch map where it is described in italic lettering as a 'Cave' and situated on a slight rise in a gently undulating landscape. It was described c. 1910 as a passage with drystone-built walls and a lintelled roof (OS Name Books). Excavation (94E0058) in advance of a cemetery extension revealed an underground lintelled chamber (dims 8.5m N-S; c. 2.5m E-W) with some lintels in place, which is connected at N to the W end of a second lintelled chamber (dims 7m E-W; 2.5m N-S) which may have had the original entrance at its SE corner. Both chambers were filled with earth and were not emptied. A furnace bottom and some slag was found at the souterrain entrance, suggesting that iron-working was conducted in the vicinity, but there was no evidence of an associated enclosure. The souterrain is excluded from the cemetery.
