At the N-facing crest of a broad E-W ridge. Described in 1979 as a D-shaped area (dims 28m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by scarps (H 1.5m at N) with traces of a bank E-S-W, probably upcast from quarries, but with no visible fosse or entrance (SMR file). The perimeter at E was overlain by a NE-SW field bank of a relict field system (RO022-104002-) of small rectangular fields covering c. 10 ha (c. 25 acres) (SMR file). Towards the E end of a broad E-W ridge. Described in 1979 as a circular area (diam. 29m E-W; 28m N-S) defined by an earthen bank SSE-NW and a scarp (H c. 1m at N) elsewhere, with traces of a fosse N-NE and an entrance (Wth c. 4m) at E (SMR file). It is now visible as a circular grass-covered area (diam 31.5m E-W; 30.7m N-S) defined by the lush growth of a fosse (Wth 3.5-4.5m) with an entrance gap (Wth 4m) at E. Visible on aerial photographs (ACAP: V206/5-6) extending NW-SE and crossing the E end of a low E-W ridge (L. c. 600 m) at its N end. On the S side of the ridge it is crossed by the NE-SW Tulsk - Castlerea road (R 367) and its NW end terminates where it meets the Ogulla - Rathmoyle road. Between these public roads it appears to have been a path (Wth c. 10m) bounded at W by and earthen bank and at E by a field wall. It is no longer visible at ground level. Between the two public roads this road was crossed by a NE-SW road (RO028-008002-), which is no longer visible, extending from Toomona friary (RO028-009001-) at the SW end to the vicinity of Ogulla well (RO022-106003-) (L c. 1.2 km). About 300m NE of Toomona friary this road was distinct (L c. 350m; Wth c. 5m) bounded by earthen banks as far as the junction with (RO028-008001-) but was less certain as it approached Ogulla. Most of this road is no longer visible. About 400m S of the Tulsk - Castlerea road (R367) there was a section (L c. 200m) bounded by earthen banks, which no longer survives. This section may have extended ESE (L c. 900m) to meet the roads (RO028-065001-) and (RO028-062001-). The road (RO028-006----) approaches the junction of roads (RO028-008001-) and (RO028-008002-) from the W, but disappears c. 350m short of this point. On an undulating low-lying landscape. A friary which may have been Dominican or Franciscan was founded here by O'Conor Rua, probably in the 15th century. In 1585 when it was granted to Edward Crofton it was described as Friancisan Third Order, and consisted of a church, cemetery and a quarter of land (Gwynn and Hadcock 1980, 275; Gormley 1989, 147-8). It is not visible at ground level in pasture. Field system (RO-028-010---) is just to the SW, on the other side of a NW-SE stream, and the road (RO028-008002-) runs NE towards Ogulla well (RO022-106003-). Toomona House is marked on a map of 1777. This is a 5-bay, 2 storey house with a porch. It was built by O'Conor Roe, but the family appears to have died out with the death of Peter O'Conor in the 1830s. The house passed to the French family of Rocksavage, Co. Carlow, and later in the nineteenth century it was owned by the Lynham and Flanagan families. In the 20th century it was owned by Murphys from Holymount, Co. Mayo, and by Fallons from Carrowroe. It has been restored recently by its present owner, who found evidence that it may have had extensions on the ground floor to the N and W.
