An area of c. 6 ha (c. 15 acres) has some rectangular fields (dims c. 30m x 50m to c. 50m x c. 100m) defined by earthen banks (Wth c. 3m; H 0.2m). A mill-race (Wth c. 2m) (RO022-113003-) which is partly stone-lined runs parallel with Ogulla stream (L c. 150m) and rejoins it c. 50m E of the point where the stream turns NE. Running S from the graveyard (RO022-114008-) is a fragment of a relict road (RO022-113002-) (Wth c. 10m; L c. 100m). An aerial photograph (CUCAP: AVH 96) shows this road extending further S (L c. 200m) but curving to the E until it meets the S-N Roscommon - Tulsk road (N61), but the road is continued N towards rath (RO022-114003-) by the relict road (RO022-114010-). This portion does not survive. Just S of the graveyard the road was crossed by an E-W relict road (RO022-113004-) (L c. 370m), visible on aerial photograph (CUCAP: AVH 96), but this is barely traceable as a slight depression (Wth c. 15m). On a rise on the SE bank of the SW-NE Ogulla River. Subcircular grass-covered mound (dims of top 34.7m E-W; 29.8m N-S; dims of base 45m E-W; 40m N-S) defined by scarps (H 1.5-1.8m E-S to 2.3m at W and 5m at N), with traces of a fosse (Wth of base 5m; D c. 0.5m) E-S. There is no visible entrance, and the perimeter has been damaged at SW. Tobernakirky well (RO022-114004-), a natural spring (diam. c. 10m), is immediately NW of the mound with a stream flowing N to the river. Archaeological testing (97E0030) c. 40m to the SW failed to produce any related material (Walsh 1998). From 2002 the rath became a focus of the Discovery Programme's medieval rural settlement module. Remote sensing surveys in 2003 revealed a roadway (RO022-114010-) (Wth c. 10m; L c. 50m) bordered by low earthen banks approaching from the S, and later field banks in the vicinity, together with anomalies suggesting stonework on the E part of the mound. Excavation (04E0850) beginning in 2004 exposed the base of a rectangular tower, probably a tower house (RO022-114011-) (ext. dim. c. 20m NNW-SSE; c. 10m ENE-WSW) with strong walls (at SW: Wth 1.8m) on a wide foundation (Wth c. 3m). It has a rounded corner at NE and a base batter, and is straddling the E side of the mound. The tower is divided into a small N room and larger S room, which itself is divided into two, and there is no clear evidence of a doorway. There is a garderobe chute in the E wall, and subsequently a building (dims c. 15m E-W; c. 9m N-S) was added to the E of the tower over the in-filled fosse (Brady 2009, 23-4). Further excavation in 2005 and 2006 removed the late 16th century layers post-dating the destruction of the castle, including a small oval feature, probably a late house-site or shelter (RO022-114012-) (dims c. 7m E-W; c. 4m N-S) at the N edge of the mound. During 2007 disturbed contexts containing early medieval material from the W edge of the rath were recovered including ring-brooches, glass beads and bone pins dating from the 10th-11th century. These layers may have been truncated at E by a large fosse surrounding the castle, but some of the rath bank with an internal revetment is preserved within the foundations of the castle. A number of occupation levels associated with the rath were glimpsed together with two fire-pits that may be from a corn-drying kiln. On the W side of the rath 1.2m of soil was introduced to raise the level of the rath, and a trench was dug through this, cutting off the E edge of the rath. The rath may have been sited on a prehistoric habitation site. (Brady 2011, 309-10) The castle (RO022-114001-) is c. 60m to the NW on the other side of the stream and the priory (RO022-114006-) with the Bingham tower house (RO022-114009-) is c. 110m to the SW. Fulachta fia (RO022-115----; RO022-116----) are c. 120m to the NE and c. 80m to the ENE respectively. Toberkirky well, a natural spring well, is immediately NW of the rath (RO022-114003-) and had a stream flowing N to the SW-NE Ogulla River, c. 30m to the W, but the well is not now visible at ground level. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010 - RO022-114006: Religious house - Dominican friars, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CRO022-114006-. An ancient church may have existed at Tulsk since it is listed in the Registry of Clonmacnoise (O'Donovan 1856-7, 451), and such a church might be that listed as Tulagh in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223). A Dominican friary dedicated to St Patrick was founded in 1448 by either by Fedlimid mac Fedlimid O'Conor or Fedlimid MacDowell (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 230-1), probably the former (McDermott 2016), but nothing is known of its history and it may have been derelict by 1582 when Sir Charles Bingham established a garrison at Tulsk (O'Conor, 2007, 196). The tower house (RO022-114009-) in the chancel may have been built then or in 1595 when Sir Richard Bingham built fortifications at Tulsk and placed them under the command of Capt. George Lane. It is situated on a gentle N-facing slope. (Gormley 1989, 38-44) Only the S wall (surviving L c. 28m) with the remains of one window, and fragments of the W and N walls (int. dim. 7.25m N-S) survive of the undifferentiated nave and chancel church, forming the earliest construction phase in the mid-15th century. In the later 15th century two pointed arches springing from a central cylindrical pillar give access to a S transept (ext. dims 12m N-S; 8m E-W) towards the W end of the S wall. There are mason's marks on the E corbel of the E arch and the SW side of the pillar, but the tracery of the S transept window, which had three lights, is missing. The top (dims 2.15m x 0.35m plus; T 0.2m) of the tomb (RO022-114007-) of Frances Gardiner, dated 1679, is almost buried in the SW corner of the transept. A crucifixion plaque (RO022-114014-) (dims 1.06m x 1.06m) over the arms of O'Conor Roe is built into the inner face of the S wall of the transept over the grave of John O'Conor of Tonroe, who died in 1777. An armorial plaque of O'Kelly (RO022-114015-) (dims 0.65m x 0.57m), probably 18th century in date, is built into the inner face of the W transept wall. The W wall of Bingham's tower house (RO022-114009-) and adjacent fragments of the N and S walls survive to three storeys. There was a doorway in the N wall at the ground floor from the church period, which is partly blocked by the W wall of the tower hose, and there are fireplaces in the W wall at the first and second floors. There was a spiral stairs in the NW angle, but there was no vaulting. The church and tower house are within as subrectangular graveyard (RO022-114008-) (dims c. 120m N-S; c. 90m E-S) which contains almost 50 dressed stones re-used as gravemarkes, including fragments of a cloister arcade, which may have been N of the church, and from the S transept window (Brady et al. 2005). Field system (RO022-113001-) extends off to the SW. The castle (RO022-114001-) is c. 120m to the NNE and rath (RO022-114003-) is c. 110m to the NE. See the attached view of the S transept from the S. A castle at Tulsk was built in 1406 by O'Conor Rua, but it was burnt in 1407 by Brian O'Conor and the Clann Donnchada. In 1426 it was captured by Ruarai O'Conor from Cathal Dubh O'Conor, but in 1430 it was recaptured by O'Conor Rua. The castle was destroyed by Ulick Og Burke in 1485 and in 1490 O'Donnell failed to capture it, but it fell to the Earl of Kildare in 1499. Possession was disputed by O'Conor Rua and MacDermot in 1511, 1561 and 1577, by which time it was probably derelict. (Bradley and Dunne 1988, 114; Gormely 1989, 33-5; O'Conor 2007, 196) It is situated on a rise on the SE bank of a SW-NE section of the Ogulla River, on the E edge of the mound of rath (RO022-114003-). Remote sensing surveys in 2003 revealed anomalies suggesting stonework on the E part of the mound. Excavation (04E0850) beginning in 2004 exposed the base of a rectangular tower, probably a tower house (ext. dim. c. 20m NNW-SSE; c. 10m ENE-WSW) with strong walls (at SW: Wth 1.8m) on a wide foundation (Wth c. 3m). It has a rounded corner at NE and a base-batter, and is straddling the E side of the mound. The tower is divided into a small N room and larger S room, which itself is divided into two, and there is no clear evidence of an external doorway. 7m E-W; c. 4m N-S) at the N edge of the mound, associated with the re-use of the site by Bingham in the 1590s (Brady 2011, 309-310). During 2007 disturbed contexts containing early medieval material from the W edge of the rath were recovered including ring-brooches, glass beads and bone pins dating from the 10th-11th century. The castle (RO022-114001-) is c. 60m to the NW on the other side of the stream and the Dominican priory (RO022-114006-) with the Bingham tower house (RO022-1140009-) are c. 110m to the SW. Fulachta fia (RO022-115----; RO022-116----) are c. 120m to the NE and c. 80m to the ENE respectively.
