In pasture, on a gentle E-facing slope. The remains of a rectangular structure (int. c. 17m E-W; 5.5m N-S) are evident in places as a scarp and in other places by up to three courses of a mortared stone wall (Wth 1.3m; H 0.6-1m); the E end-wall does not survive. The orientation of the structure suggests the remains of a small church and it could be a chapel associated with the pilgrimage to Achonry (see O'Rorke 1878, 417). The main ecclesiastical remains at Achonry, which include the cathedral (SL032-188002-) and graveyard (SL032-188003-), lie c. 100m to the SW. O'Rorke (1878, 422) noted that 'some hundreds of paces to the north-east (of the graveyard) are the ruins and rubbish of a building, which the inhabitants of Achonry call The College'. He is probably referring to this structure. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL032-188002: Cathedral, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL032-188002-. At the N end of Achonry graveyard (SL032-188003-) and immediately E of St Crumnathy's, an early 19th-century deconsecrated C of I cathedral. Part of the E gable (int. Wth 6.85m) and the N wall (surviving length 14.7m; H 1.2m) of the church survive in poor repair and heavily clad with ivy. In the centre of the E gable are the fragmentary remains of a window which had three sub-arches with switchline tracery above, cut in limestone, and is late 15th/early 16th century in form. The interior of the church is overshadowed by a sycamore tree, and partially covered by scrub undergrowth. A block of stone decorated with concentric circles, possibly a corbel, was recently found within it where it had been reused as a grave-marker (pers. comm. M. A. Timoney). This is the site of a church founded by St Finnian in the 7th century though 'nothing further is known of the history of Achonry until the twelfth century' (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 60). Achonry was a separate diocese during part of the late medieval period (ibid.) and a cathedral is mentioned here in the 1680s (Ó Muraíle 2002, 240, n. 24), so this is probably the remains of this structure. It was inadvertently named 'R.C. Chapel' on the 1914 OS 6-inch map. A possible church (SL032-188001-) lies c. 100m to the NE and a holy well (SL032-188006-) is c. 100m to the SE. A subrectangular graveyard (c. 60m E-W; c. 30m N-S) with a 20th-century extension on its S side. At its N end is St Cromnathy's C of I cathedral immediately E of which is the ruin of a late medieval cathedral (SL032-188002-). The grave-markers appear to be mostly of 19th-century date and include two chest-tombs, one near the SE corner and another near the centre which stands on a rusticated plinth. Herity, Kelly and Mattenberger (1997, 118) recorded two cross-inscribed stones (SL032-188011-) and a carved stone (H c. 0.3m) (SL032-188009-) within the interior. The carved stone, with a human head in high relief at the centre of one face, was originally part of a larger piece. A possible church (SL032-188001-) lies c. 100m to NW and a holy well (SL032-188006-) is c. 100m to the SE. A field system (SL032-188004-) survives to the N and S of the graveyard. In pasture, on a gentle NE-facing slope. The remains of relict field systems lie to the N and S of Achonry graveyard (SL032-188003-). The fields are mostly rectangular in shape, ranging in size from 12m x 15m to 83m x 30m, but some are D-shaped or irregular. The field boundaries are comprised of scarps, low earthen banks (Wth c. 3m), and parallel lines of limestone slabs with an earthen core. The best-preserved group of fields is that to the S of the graveyard. Crossing it is a disused road (Wth c. 6m) (SL032-188005-), cut into the slope on its SW side and bounded by a low earthen bank (Wth 3m; H c. 0.25m) on its NE side; it extends NE for c. 17m before turning SE where it can be traced for a further 90m. There is a similar field system (SL032-047004-) at Abbey Court friary, c. 3.5km to N. A second field system (SL038-016002-) lies c. 1km to SE in the same townland. In wet pasture, in the S corner of a field and c. 100m SE of Achonry cathedral (SL032-188002-) and graveyard (SL032-188003-). The well consists of an oval pit (0.8m NW-SE; 1.3m NE-SW) enclosed by a partially collapsed moss and sod-covered stone wall (Wth 0.8m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.3m). Along the E-SW arc, where the well abuts the N side of a penitential cairn (SL032-188007-), the wall forms a stone facing (H 0.3m) against the base of the cairn. According to local information in 2002, the traditional 'pattern' day is still observed and is held on August 15th. O'Rorke (1878, 417) noted that 'patterns' were held on Saturday with as many as 'two or three hundred present on the Saturday that immediately preceded the 15th of August'. The well is named after St Finian of Clonard who with St Nathy is said to have founded a monastery here (ITA). On a NE-facing slope, in the S corner of a field, and on the S side of Toberfinane holy well (SL032-188006-). A field boundary curves NE-NW around the cairn. The cairn consists of a low circular almost entirely sod-covered mound of stones (4.5m N-S; 4.5m E-W; H 0.4m at S; 1.4m at N just above the well). On top of it is a small square flat-topped structure (1.2m NW-SE; 1.2m NE-SW; H 0.3m at SW; 0.75m at NE) of drystone construction. It is built up on the NE side to compensate for the sloping ground. Erected on top of the structure is a modern 'Celtic' cross, painted white, and in front of the cross, a horizontal slab which provides a flat table-like surface. The structure appears to serve as an altar (SL032-188010-). According to local information, the traditional pattern day, which is still observed, is held on the 15th of August. O'Rorke (1878, 417) stated that the 'great pile of stones' next to 'Tubber-Finneen' were 'deposited one after another by the crowds of devotees that used to frequent the place to invoke the intercession of that saint'. Found inside the boundary wall of Achonry cathedral (SL032-188002-). Described by Herity, Kelly and Mattenberger (1997, 118) as a subtriangular slab with a pointed butt, on one broad face of which is carved a cross-in-circle in false relief (H 51.5cm); the slab was then in private possession locally but its current location is not known. A photograph of the slab taken in the 1980s shows a small plain Greek cross beneath the cross-in circle and an inscription, possibly 'Comte or Conire', along the outer edge of one quadrant of the upper half of the cross-in-circle. In the SW quadrant of Achonry graveyard (SL032-188003-). Described by Herity, Kelly and Mattenberger (1997, 118) as a stone (H 0.39m), possibly part of a lintel, with a simple cross-in-circle (diam. c. 0.11m) incised on the narrow S face. On level ground on N-facing slope of ridge. Three large boulders laid flat on the ground, two to the S and the other to the N, support a fourth which clearly has been deliberately placed on them. This raised boulder (3.55m x 2.55m; T 1.4m) is the largest of the four while the smallest of the others measures 2.25m x 1.6m x 0.9m T. There is a pad-stone (0.35m x 0.25m; T 0.2m) between the northern supporting boulder and the large raised boulder. The affinities of this curious structure may lie with boulder-burials. In pasture, in gently undulating terrain on a natural elevation defined on the SE edge by a short length of exposed limestone rock face. Ground falls away to E−S, and more gently at SW. The steepest slope is at SE−S, dropping into a small valley of flat damp ground beyond which ground rises again. Knocknashee is clearly visible on the N skyline. Forestry plantations now cover much of the surrounding landscape. A possible enclosure (SL032-235002-) lies immediately to N. This cashel is not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps; it is visible in aerial imagery. According to local information, it is traditionally known as ‘Cashleen’ and the field is known as the ‘Cashel field’. The remains are ephemeral and difficult to trace at ground level. The cashel was originally roughly circular (28m N−S; 28-29m E−W) but the enclosing wall cannot now be traced on the W half, where it has been replaced by a N−S rubble field wall (Wth 1m; H 0.5-1m). On the E half, the outline of the original enclosing wall is defined at NE−SW by a moss-covered scarp from which occasional stones protrude; the scarp is most pronounced (H 2m, Wth slope 3m at SE; H 1.2m, Wth slope 2m at S) at SE−S where it merges with and is enhanced by the natural break of slope. At SE it incorporates the vertical bedrock face (H 1.2m L 2m). At NW-N the cashel appears to been truncated by possible enclosure (SL032-235002-). The cashel interior slopes down slightly from N to S−SE. This drop in level is accentuated in the SE quadrant by a low mossy scarp which extends from the enclosing scarp at E in a shallow curve across the interior, terminating at its W end (roughly in the centre of the cashel) in a low heap (4m N−S; c. 2m E−W) of stones, obscured by sod, brambles and a hawthorn bush. Immediately to W of this, a subrectangular area (10m N−S; 7m E−W) is divided off in the SW quadrant by a barely discernible E−W linear rise on the N and E sides, by the cashel scarp at S and by the N−S field wall on the W side. The cashel is grass-covered with a few hawthorn bushes on the scarp at S. An enclosure (SL032-187----) is located 340m to NNE and two ringbarrow (SL038-005----; SL038-006----) are 300m to SE. In pasture, on a natural elevation in gently undulating terrain. Ground falls away to E and S and more gently at SW. Knocknashee is clearly visible on the N skyline. Forestry plantations now cover much of the surrounding landscape. There is a cashel (SL032-235001-) immediately to S. This possible enclosure is not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps; it is visible in aerial imagery. The remains are scant and difficult to interpret. A roughly D-shaped area (18m E-W to wall at W; c. 22-24m N−S) is defined by a slight rise or scarp on the curving E side; the rise/scarp (Wth c. 2.5-3m, top Wth c. 1m), which is distinguished by shorter, yellower grass growth, barely rises above internal ground level and has a slumped external slope (ext. H 0.5-0.6m). There appears to be a break at E, possibly an entrance. The S arc is difficult to trace; it may overlie/truncate the N arc of a cashel (SL032-235001-) which lies immediately to S. A N−S field wall defines the straight W side; there is no trace of a continuation of the enclosure to W of this wall. On the N arc the enclosing scarp drops to an outer terrace (Wth 2-2.5m) defined on its outer edge by another low rise/scarp (ext. H 0.5m), which follows the natural contour, curving N−NE and then swinging to E for a few meters before petering out; it may be the remains of a later field boundary that skirted the elevated ground. The interior is level with a possible hut site (SL032-235003-) in the N half, with a telegraph pole adjacent to it. Listed in the SMR (1989) and the RMP (1995) and classified in both as 'Enclosure, possible'. Its inclusion is based on evidence from an aerial photograph (IASAP, 3033062-3) of a curved feature. This is not an enclosure, but is part of a field boundary in a field system (SL038-016002-). Compiled by: Archaeological Survey Unit, UCC with revisions by Patrick F. O'Donovan and Paul Walsh Date of upload: 20 June 2011 - SL038-016002: Field system, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL038-016002-. In undulating pasture. The remains of a field system, underlying the present field system, are visible in an aerial photograph (IASAP, 3033062-3) as linear and curvilinear field boundaries. No complete field can be identified in the aerial photograph or on the ground but traces of low earthen banks (Wth 4m; H 0.4-0.6m) are visible at ground level. These consist of an arc of earthen bank (C c. 30m) on the S side of a modern E-W field boundary from which a similar but straight earthen bank extends in a SE direction for c. 100m. A branch of this extending to SW, visible in the aerial photograph, is not visible at ground level nor is a continuation of the arc in a northerly direction. This field system is possibly associated with a circular enclosure (SL038-016003-) c. 40m to W. A second field system (SL032-188004-) lies c. 1km to NW in the same townland. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). In undulating pasture, on top of a low rise. A raised roughly semicircular area (28m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1m) WSW-ESE. The interior is crossed by a field boundary on an E-W axis and the scarp is less well defined on the S side of this boundary. The NW quadrant has been recently dug out. A field system (SL038-016002-) lies c. 40m to E. In pasture, on a low rise on a S-facing slope. A circular slightly raised area (int. diam. c. 7m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.55m). A small hole was recently dug in the centre and there is a small quarry immediately to SW. The S portion of the interior is raised c. 0.45m to compensate for the hillslope. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure but inadvertently named 'Megalithic Monument (Site of)' on the 1941-2 OS 6-inch map. The OS Name Books of the 1941-2 survey noted that the name applied to 'an ancient mound site of a Giants Grave' (Ó Nualláin 1989, 99, no. 26).
