In a wet meadow, near an inlet of Lough Gara. Views are blocked to E, N and S by drumlins. An oval high-cairn crannog (26m N-S; 24m E-W; H 2.8m above the meadow). The grass-covered mid-cairn (10.4m N-S; 7.4m E-W) is located slightly off-centre to E. The edges of the mid-cairn slope gently down towards the surrounding plateau in all directions except to N, where there is a sharper drop. The plateau stretches out to N, W and S and consists of a dense concentration of loosely packed stones. It slopes gently towards the edges and is sparsely overgrown with ivy and flowers. Under the top layer of large stones, smaller shattered stones are visible, creating an uneven surface. The edge drops off distinctly in all directions and is very distinct in material. There is very little overspill of stones from the crannog. The vegetation consists of grass, large trees and bushes. In pasture, on top of and occupying almost the entire width of a narrow ridge with panoramic views and overlooking another rath (SL047-060----), c. 200m to NE. The rath is indicated as an oval enclosure on the 1838 OS 6-inch map. It is now evident as a slightly raised, roughly D-shaped area (25.5m N-S; 23m E-W) defined at W by a linear NNE-SSW field boundary which truncates the W arc. The interior is defined NNW-SSW by a scarp (H 1.05m) with a slight internal lip (H 0.3m). The scarp (H 1.4m) NNW-NE is incorporated into a second field boundary. There is an eroded gap (Wth 2m) in the scarp at SE. The interior is level and grass-covered and the perimeter is ringed with hawthorn and brambles. A slight hollow around the base of the scarp, noted during a previous inspection in 1993 (SMR (1989) file), is no longer evident. In pasture, in a flat valley, overlooked to SSW by a ridge. A roughly circular area (49.8m ESE-WNW; c. 47.5m NNE-SSW) enclosed by the remains of two earthen banks with an intervening and external fosse. The inner bank (Wth 5.4m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.8m) is evident SSE-NNW, with remnants E-ESE, is levelled NNW-NE and is truncated by a N-S field boundary ENE-E. The intervening fosse (Wth 3.5m) and substantial outer bank (Wth 4.4m; int. H 1.7m; ext. H 1.2m) are evident SSE-SW. The intervening fosse is flat-bottomed, waterlogged and marked by rushes. The external fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.4m) is evident SSE-SW as a broad shallow depression marked by rushes. A slight rise (Wth c. 1.5m), highlighted by a differential growth pattern, on the outer edge of the external fosse at SSE may be remnants of a counterscarp bank. The interior slopes gently down to NNE. At SSE there is a poorly defined gap (Wth 2.4m) in the inner bank, a causeway (Wth 4m) across the intervening fosse and a corresponding gap in the outer bank, though the latter is now marked only by the E terminal of the outer bank. There is a stream/drain immediately to N of the rath. Another rath (SL047-059----) is c. 200m to SW. In level pasture, immediately to S of a road. A slightly raised rectangular area (34m N-S; 25.5m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (int. H 0.35m; ext. H 1.2m), incorporated into a field boundary (Wth 1.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.4m) on the N side. The bank is engulfed in overgrowth and field-clearance debris. There is a break (Wth 10m) in the bank at the N end of the E side. Traces of a depression outside the bank at W and S may indicate an external fosse. The interior is level. The NE, SE and SW corners appear rounded in an aerial photograph (ACAP, V227 54-5) but this could not be confirmed due to the overgrowth. In poorly drained level pasture, at the W end of a low natural elevation in a narrow valley. A slightly raised roughly circular area (c. 23m N-S; 27.6m E-W) defined by a scarp, an outer bank and an intervening and external fosse. All enclosing elements are levelled NW-NE and the area is marked by a dense growth of rushes. The scarp (H 0.9m) is generally well defined NE-NW. The intervening flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 3.2m) is marked by a growth of rushes NE-NW; elsewhere the fosse is evident as band of wet ground. The outer bank (Wth 5m; int. H 1.5m; ext. H 1.1m) is partially truncated NE-E by a substantial field boundary with a drain but elsewhere it is broad with a compact rounded profile, flattened on the top in places. The external fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.2m) is evident ESE-NW as narrow shallow depression, indicated mainly by a growth of rushes, and truncated NE-E by a field boundary. There is an entrance at E consisting of a causeway (Wth 3.2m) across the intervening fosse with traces of a corresponding gap in the outer bank. The W half of the interior is higher than the E half with a gradual slope down towards centre. There is a stream c. 15m to N. In poorly drained pasture, at the bottom of a valley. A raised circular area (40.8m N-S; 37m E-W) defined by the remains of an earthen bank (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 2.35m) along the S arc and elsewhere by a scarp (H 2.5m). A broad flat-bottomed intervening fosse (Wth 3.8m at base) is evident all round, the S arc is waterlogged. There is a broad steep-sided outer bank (Wth 7m; int. H 1.75m; ext. H 1.5m) with a flattened top which, where eroded, reveals a stony core. It is incorporated into a field boundary NE-E. There is a drain (Wth 1m) immediately outside the outer bank SSE-SW. The entrance at SE consists of a gap (Wth 3m) in the inner bank, a causeway (Wth c. 4m) across the fosse and a corresponding gap in the outer bank which is now blocked by a field boundary. There is a small irregular cairn (3.5m N-S; 3.3m E-W; H 0.6m) of moss-covered stones to W of centre of the level interior. The banks are overgrown with bushes and the fosse is blocked in places by fallen trees. There is an entrance (Wth 5.5m) at SE with a causeway across the fosse. The interior is waterlogged.
