On a knoll in good pasture c. 150m E of Lough Dargan and c. 500m WSW of a court tomb (SL021-020----) at Carrownagh. The tomb stands in a low, oval mound (28m E-W; 12.5m N-S; max. H 1.5m). A largely destroyed full court (L 7.5m) at the E leads to a gallery (L 6m; max. Wth 2.7m). Two jambs define the entrance to the gallery and two more divide it into two chambers. The court is represented by five stones, one flanking each entrance jamb and three at its outer end. A gap between two of three outer stones may form the entrance to the court. A large stone standing on edge at the inner end of the court may have rested on the entrance jambs as a lintel. The gallery sides are intact save for a gap at the inner half of the N side of the front chamber. There are two displaced stones in this chamber. Listed in both the SMR (1989) and the RMP (1995) and classified 'Enclosure'. In pasture, on level ground on top of an E-W ridge two fields SW of 'Ardnisbrack House'. Depicted as an subrectangular tree-covered feature on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and as an oval enclosure with interior planted with trees on the 1913 OS 6-inch map. Upstanding remains comprise a crescent-shaped curve S-N, incorporated into a linear N-S field boundary (Wth 0.8m; H 0.8m). The enclosed semicircular area (30m N-S; 10m E-W) is flat, featureless and flush with the exterior ground level. This is likely to be a landscape feature of post-1700 AD date. Compiled by: Archaeological Survey Unit, UCC Date of upload: 11 January 2012 - SL021-046002: Cliff-edge fort, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL021-046002-. On the top of an E-W ridge at the edge of a N-facing limestone bluff overlooking Lough Dargan. A slightly raised roughly D-shaped area (dims. c. 30m ENE-WSW) with a straight N side (L 30m). The interior is defined on the straight side by the bluff and elsewhere by a ruined stone wall. The wall survives as a sod-covered stone bank (Wth c. 1.7m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.65m) but stones protruding in parts indicate that it is composed of a rubble core with internal and external stone facing. It is best-preserved NE-S but is very degraded and broken by numerous gaps SW-NW. The interior is level but uneven, broken by E-W bands of limestone pavement. A faint linear cropmark crosses the E edge of the interior on a NNW-SSE axis intersecting at the N end with a perpendicular line that can be traced for c. 10m to WSW across the N of the interior. These features may be the remains of later field boundaries. The cashel is located towards the W end of the cliff at a point where a series of broken terraces allow access to the base of the cliff and from there to the lakeshore. A cashel (SL021-046003-) is visible on a lower undulation of the same ridge c. 150m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL021-046003: Ringfort - cashel, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL021-046003-. On top of an E-W ridge, at the edge of a steep bluff. An oblong area (26m E-W; 16m N-S) defined NNW-NNE by the break of slope at the top of the bluff and elsewhere by a slight moss-covered rise (Wth 1.5m) outside which the ground falls away gently in a natural slope. At the base of the slope, at a distance of 8-10m from the inner wall, is an outer enclosing wall. It is difficult to trace NE-SE and is truncated in parts by small areas of quarrying. It survives S-NW as a sod-covered stony bank (Wth c. 3m) topping a low scarp (H 0.7m). A third wall and outer fosse are visible as cropmarks in an aerial photograph (IASAP, 3043089-90) along the WNW arc outside and separated from the second wall by an intervening fosse. A cliff-edge fort (SL021-046002-) is visible on higher ground c. 150m to NE. The remains of a field system (SL021-046004-) lie in the surrounding field to E, S and W. There is a possible hut site (SL021-046006-) c. 20m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL021-046004: Field system, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL021-046004-. In pasture, on top of a ridge. A fragmented pattern of field boundaries, covering an area c. 300m x 90m, is visible in an aerial photograph (IASAP, 3043089-90) radiating to E, S and W of a cashel (SL021-046003-). On the ground, the field boundaries are evident as slight stony rises covered with moss. Immediately to W of the cashel, the walls enclose small subrectangular fields of unequal size (e.g. 25m N-S x 12.5m E-W; 16m N-S x 45-50m E-W) laid out axially along a natural E-W elevation. The shape of the fields is largely dictated by natural contours. A possible hut site (SL021-046006-) is located c. 20m SW of the cashel and appears to be associated with this field system. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008 - SL021-046005: Field boundary, https://heritagedata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0c9eb9575b544081b0d296436d8f60f8&query=18a4b61b268-layer-9%2CSMRS%2CSL021-046005-. Not included in the SMR (1989) but listed in the RMP (1995) and classified 'House Site Possible'. Within Arnasbrack cashel (SL021-046002-). This feature was described in 1992 as the rectangular outline (8m NE-SW; 5.5m NW-SE) of a possible structure (SMR (1989) file). During a subsequent inspection (25/11/2002) it was recorded that what was previously mistaken as a hut site may, in fact, be later field boundaries. These field boundaries are described as a faint linear cropmark traversing the E edge of the interior on a NNW-SSE axis and intersecting at the N end with a perpendicular line that can be traced for c. 10m to WSW across the N of the interior. These features may be the remains of later field boundaries. An aerial photograph (IASAP, 3043089-90) confirms this. These are probably post-1700 AD in date. A parcel is the land of a title, not an address. The owner's name is in the Land Registry of Tailte Éireann: a copy of the folio can be ordered on landdirect.ie, for a fee; this site names no owner. A price is the price recorded for a past sale, not a valuation.
